Jonathan was 27 yrs old, Miriam was 18, and the stillborn Abigail was 9 months... all ages condense to 9 (2+7, 1+8), which is a constant theme throughout the album (18 is actually 9), in addition to all the sevens (the 7th day of July 1777, 7 silver spikes, the 7 (Black) Horsemen, etc). I recall this coming out around the same time as Iron Maiden's Seventh Son album, and Helloween's Keeper Of The Seven Keys albums... so much "seven" between 1986 and 1989...
Hi ! King Diamond sing all part of this album . Welcome to my Metal World for more then 40 years - i´m 53 years old and i got tthis album at home and i love it
Thanks for reacting to these! There is so much to unpack with these songs, lol. The entire album is a 40(ish) minute long story. Jonathan is the descendent of Abigail's family from the 1777 opening (that was nailed into her coffin). The 18 will become 9 is definitely a warning about what will befall them as the album goes on. 18 is 9 you say??? Miriam, the main female character, is 18 and Jonathan is 27 in this song -- 1 plus 8 = 9, as does 2 plus 7. To further blow your mind... July 7th 1777 is the 7th month, so it works out like this... 7 plus 7 plus 1 plus 7 plus 7 plus 7 =36. Then, 3 plus 6 =9!! Exactly what 9 is significant of is too horrifying of a spoiler to be revealed this early!. Fun fact: This is going to be released as a graphic novel sometime in November unless the pandemic has delayed the plan. The vocalist is King Diamond and the band is named after him. They were definitely a different sounding band back in the 80's, which is most likely what led to their popularity. This album ended up on several worldwide top 25 of Metal Albums of the '80s lists, and it is considered their masterpiece. I'm really happy that you had time to react to this, and I am glad you enjoyed it for the different musical experience that it is!! If you're willing, I'll sneak the rest of the album into suggestions as time goes. Thanks, Randi!!
I remember loving this back in the 80's! Great old metal classic. The Abigail album is a great concept/story album about possession. Very cool! Yes the vocals are all the same Danish guy. The best song on this album is the title track, "Abigail".
7th Day of July 1777, Black Horsemen, Family Ghost, Arrival and Mansion in Darkness are all better songs. I’d choose Abigail before Omens and The Possession only.
Yes, King is telling a story . So you need to listen all hes records . King Diamond one off my favorites . He’s guitar Andy LaRoche ( probably spelled wrong) is so good .
Yes, all vocals are by King Diamond. :-) At least until 2000 or so when he incorporates a bit more female vocals into the songs (provided by his wife, Livia Zita). The only exception might be the Grandma voice on the "all ambiance & dialogue" track Phone Call from 1988, as part of the 2-part story told on the albums Them (1988) and Conspiracy (1989).
@@metalzonemt-2 King did Grandma's voice on Phone Call? I dunno... it sounded like an actual old woman. I know he voiced Grandma on the closing track Coming Home, but that's all. The cackle at the end of Phone Call had to be an actual voice actor, ta least - no way THAT part was King... I'm still sure the whole Phone Call part of Grandma was another actor, but I guess I could see King doing it - it all sounds the same when that raspy dialogue is whispered and strained.

This one is quite simple. Miriam LaFey is 18 years old. She gets pregnant which is 9 months. So 18 = 9 means the 18 year old girl becomes 9 months pregnant. (Jonathan = 27) Nine is a satanic or magical number. if you take the table of 9, the results (whenever counted together) always give 9. 1 x 9 = 9 2 x 9 = 18 (1+8=9) 3 x 9 = 27 (2+7=9) and so on. See the picture? King uses this number alot in his lyrics. Whenever there are dates, ages or any kind of numbers mentioned, they always equal 9 or a multiplicity of that number
King Diamond's LP's were always present in record shops of old. Yet I didn't ever make that purchase. Now I've heard one/two songs, my thoughts are Maidens meets Alice Cooper. The music is fine, changing up and down in key and tempo, adjusting tones of mood for the listener to interpret. The voices, put me in mind of an old book I read years ago called the Screwtape Letters. It's about an unsuccessful minor demon, and his failure to carry out instructions from the devil, and the conversations between them. Of course the deeper voice is of the devil, and the higher, that of the minor demon that is Screwtape himself. It's written by C.S. Lewis, a renown Christian author. Enjoyable in a nostalgic sense, but the vocals make it sound dated. That it no way indicates any distaste on my part, in fact, another couple of songs would be welcome further down the line.
"Arrival is right after "Funeral" ...first two tracks on the album. The funeral is from 1777 and the couple's arrival to the mansion is in 1845, much later.
Listen to this album gate to gate, is just amazing. There's no other word to describe it. Personally, I was disappointed to see Michael Denner j& Timi Hansen leave after this album, but I have to admit, the addition of Pete Blakk(2nd lead & rhythm guitar) & Hal Latino(bass) were great additions. My favorite 2 songs from Abigail & Them, The Black Horsemen, & The Invisible Guests

I guess in order to understand what "18 is 9" means, you need to know the whole story. It's about a young couple, Jonathan LaFey and Miriam Matias, who, in 1845, move into a mansion that LaFey inherited. When they arrive, they are warned by seven horsemen not to enter the mansion, or else "18 will become 9" (Miriam is 18 years old at this point). They ignore the warning and move into the mansion. On their first night in the mansion, Jonathan meets with the ghost of Count de La Dey, a deceased relative, who shows Jonathan a casket in which a corpse of a stillborn child, Abigail rests. The ghost informs Jonathan that Miriam is carrying the spirit of Abigail inside her and the child will soon be reborn. He tells Jonathan that in order to prevent this from happening, he must kill Miriam immediately. The narration then tells what happened to the Count and his wife: On July 7, 1777, the Count discovered that his wife was cheating on him and was pregnant. The Count was enraged because he knew the child wasn't his, so he pushed his wife down the stairs causing her to break her neck and the baby to be stillborn. The count had the Countess' body cremated and the stillborn fetus, whom he name Abigail, mummified and laid to rest in a sarcophagus, due to an inexplicable urge to preserve Abigail for the future, The story then returns to the present time, during which Jonathan and Mariam are beset by strange omens- a church bell ringing even though there is nobody there to ring it, flowers dying, unwholesome stenches filling the house, the dining room table being set for three, and in one incident, Jonathan discovers an empty cradle swaying in the air, with both Jonathan and Miriam insisting that they didn't bring it with them. The next day. Miriam is obviously pregnant, and the fetus develops very quickly. (I think this is where the "18 will be come 9" comes in- Abigail, who is 18 years old, becomes 9 months pregnant, but I could be wrong. I think it refers to the rapid unnatural development of the fetus inside Abigail). Jonathan realizes that the ghost of the Count (the family ghost) was telling the truth. He then accuses Abigail of possessing Miriam, and Abigail admits it, through Miriam. Jonathan. who is terrified, considers finding a priest to perform an exorcism on Miriam, but Miriam, exercising a moment of control, convinces Jonathan to throw her down the stairs in order to kill her and the fetus inside her. Jonathan pretends to give in to Abigail's demands and suggests to Abigail. now in control of Miriam, that she should come down to the family crypt, so she can be reborn where she died. However, Jonathan is distracted as he and Miriam are standing at the top of the stairs and Miriam throws him down the stairs. Miriam gives birth to Abigail but dies shortly afterwards. The last thing she sees are Abigail's yellow eyes. Supposedly, Miriam's ghost can be heard screaming on the stairs every July. The seven horseman arrive at the mansion and discover the baby Abigail in the sarcophagus eating something that the narrator says is too horrible (It is suggested later that Abigail is devouring her own previous body) The horsemen are appalled by this and take Abigail away to bury her in a hidden chapel in the forest with seven silver spikes driven through her body. (This is heard in the opening track "Funeral"). in hopes that this will prevent any further resurrections.
