Roof collapse after 87 years on 200 year old Irish stone outbuilding
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- After a week of hard work uncovering the floor in our 200 year old Irish farmhouse outbuilding, we never expected this to happen. No one was hurt which is the most important thing and nothing was broken in the outbuilding.
The planned repair and restoration was replaced by demolition and tree felling, bringing a job for next spring forward to this rainy, blowy Autumn.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

When you are redoing and repairing a home like this, the first thing you have to do, is find the bad stuff! I would just say that now you've found some, then you can repair it! Keep it up! You're doing a great job!
You’re absolutely right and it’s a very good way of looking at it, fingers crossed we have found the majority of the bad stuff and we can just set about fixing it all now 😊
Please give your wonderful neighbor a thank you from an old retired dairywoman in Idaho. You know we sometimes have an entire day where nothing goes right, followed by a few weeks of things go right again. Neighbors like that show us the value of helping out others when things are going bad.
Aww we will, we could not have down it without his help, he was amazing! I think in total he was here nearly 7 hours helping us get it sorted!
Glad you were not under there when it came down! Never a dull moment right!
Oh Pat, so were we. I think we would have had enough "crack" time warning to have got out but much better we weren't anywhere near it. It wasn't the best moment in our renovation journey so far.
Nope, never a dull moment haha.
Thank you Pat for watching and commenting :-)
It’s so lucky that you weren’t in there and or hurt when it fell! That’s awesome that your neighbor helped you out with the tractor, the Irish people are so lovely like that. 😊💚
Oh it really was….could have been so much worse! So sad that it went though, but lesson learned…be careful pulling Ivy off just in case it’s the only thing holding something together! Haha
They really are, everyone and I mean everyone that we have met since we moved here has been sooo nice, friendly and really helpful! The two farmer neighbours especially! I think we’re very lucky 🍀
The Irish people are the best in the whole world, they are famous for that and great singers as wel
Your neighbour is a real gentleman.I wish him the best of luck, and the same to yourselves.james
Thank you James. Oh he really is! Because we didn’t know how we were going to approach that safely! Such a lovely bloke too. We are very grateful to him. 😊
Close call! glad you’re good
“Crack On”
Hahaha, we were lucky we weren't in it and had finished for the day before the cracking started
Sorry about this disappointment. Glad you are both well. ❤
Thank you 😊
I hope you will get someone who is an experienced stone mason to assess the barn and give you some advice of how to go forward. The voids in the walls look severe and potential unstable. I know this was an emotional blow but as you said the roof would have needed to come off anyway!
There were very bad and if not addressed the gable and wall probably would have collapsed over winter. Luckily our only neighbour has many years experience with stone and building and did a couple of Saturdays saving it for the winter. Dawn wanted to do it but the experience and speed the neighbour had was more important. Now Dawn is repairing all of the the other walls ready for a new roof.
Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Actually, the timing couldn’t have been better. After you cleared out most of the mess, and before you put anything valuable in that could’ve been damaged, including yourselves! Yes, you’ve got a mess now but it’s opened everything up so you can see what needs to be done to put it all right again. I hope the guy that you had coming to fix the wall will still come over and do the work.
What a good neighbor that farmer was to come and help you with his tractor, and so impressive that he was able to get that tree cut down standing on the bucket! That was quite a performance. I gave him a hearty round of applause when he felled the tree.
This is it, the most important thing is that nobody was hurt. Then nothing was damaged. It was just sad. BUT... as you say, we can see what work needs doing to it to repair it all. Yes, again the neighbour who helped us with his tractor came down for a couple of Saturdays and showed Dawn how to do it. The gable end is still stood as you will see from later videos and as soon as the weather is right, the liming will start.
He is quite a guy, a bit of an action man haha. All of our neighbours in the area have and are still looking after us in their own way. We love them all and are so happy we ended up here.
Thank you again for watching and commenting :-)
Wow! I did not see this when you originally posted it. But now you are going to do more work on it real-time soon. That tree was compromising the building and making it unsafe for you work around the area. Stay safe.
Oh I know we were so gutted when that happened 😞 lots of things went wrong in the beginning but at least now we are finally getting to fix it up and get that roof back on 🎉
It’s a shame to cut down healthy trees but it has done so much damage to the side wall, it was a good thing to take it down and if it wasn’t for the neighbour we probably wouldn’t have thought about it, so it’s thanks to him for pointing it out and then ultimately cutting it down for us. ❤️
On the bright side, even though it doesn't feel like it, you guys are moving forward, towards a great home. Great watching your journey.
Thank you 😊 we’re glad to have you here! Yeah everyday we achieve something, it’s just about reminding ourselves of that when things don’t necessarily go the way we planned lol.
Just re-watching this and did not notice your finger with the sad face drawn on it in top left corner of screen near the start first time round and sitting here with a silly grin on my face, you have come a long way since this video well dome Dawn and Ben
Haha, do you know what Tom, we think you are the only person who noticed it 😂 when Ben was editing it…he went “ahh bloody hell, I’ve got my finger over the lens! I know…smiley face!”
Very relieved that nobody was hurt and that you are still carrying on. Will be praying for good weather and progress on the joists in the kitchen ceiling. I have no doubt that you will succeed. All your subscribers are with you.
Thank you, yeah we were a little deflated when it happened but then realised it could have been so much worse if we’d been inside it, so yep onwards and upwards as they say! We are hoping the gazebo arrives tomorrow as then that’s one step closer to finally getting to these joists. Today was a septic tank hunt! We found it! Yay!
With the extended doorway, the outbuilding would be a place to park your car at some point. It seems that your property is telling you what needs done.
All the best
Ooh it would….good idea. It was used for a tractor in the past so I’m sure we could squeeze our car in there.
I think you’re right the property does seem to guide us with what needs doing and when.
What great neighbour you have to come to your aid the way he did, restores your faith in human nature, so sad to see it set you back the way it has after all the hard work you put in, but all is well that ends well, xx❤
Yeah he’s a very good neighbour. It was a lot of hard work getting it sorted but…at least once the new roof goes on…we’ve already done all the hard work inside so that’s even better! Lol xx
You are both so amazing and I love the history and all the wee treasures❤
Oh you and me both! It’s fascinating isn’t it? I like to keep all the bits that I/we find because you never know when you might find the other part of something that makes it complete!
Sorry about this disappointment. Glad you are both well. . Sorry about this disappointment. Glad you are both well. .
Thank you, but yeah also very glad we were away from it at the time!
So thankful you weren't in it when it collapsed. You're doing a great job and I'm sure you'll get there in the end. Thanks for sharing this with us on UA-cam, bless you in your endeavours.
Thank you 😊 yes we were very glad too! 😬
Y’all are doing great. Two steps forward and one step back still means one step forward.
Thanks, it does indeed. We like that, thank you :-) Thank you for always watching and commenting too.
Thank you! I absolutely love this!
That’s one way of removing the roof. Bright side is it needed to be replaced, so the shed kinda helped itself by bringing it down. It’s now at ground level to be removed. I was wondering how it was possible to remove it safely, and it’s done!😊
Haha yes that’s the quick way to drop it down! It’s quite tricky stuff that tin especially when it’s part rusted….lots of sharp edges!
Sorry this happened. But I bet it will end up better because of it. I think the sound is much better.
It definitely will. We will fix it up and hopefully it can stand proud another 200 years! Thank you for saying about the sounds. Xx
I reckon you should do a total rebuild and sleep in there instead of the tent
We will probably be saying differently if it was the height of winter…but it’s been actually very nice sleeping in the tent. 😂
Nature has a nasty way of dictating what will happen. That Ivy has not only eaten into but also holding the building together. You will be a lot safer in the long run. Love the videos !
Yeah it really does! Will definitely be more wary of removing it off the next building we have to tackle!
Thank goodness for friendly farmers up the road! Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise, the roof always had to come off and if it hadn’t come down so dramatically you would have struggled to do it slowly on your own. The ivy is a terror, seems be killing off so many Irish trees. I can highly recommend a hand held trimmer from Stihl. It’s battery powered and has a neat little 6” chainsaw blade. I got one this year and absolutely love it. It would make slicing through ivy vines much easier,
oh yes, you’re absolutely right as we wouldn’t have been able to put any pressure on the roof whilst taking it off, so yes a blessing in disguise most definitely. As for the neighbour…well he is the blooming best! He has helped us out of a pickle quite a few times now! Strangely enough I came across those mini chainsaws the other day whilst watching someone else’s UA-cam channel, can’t remember who now but I hadn’t even realised they existed so after your recommendation too, I think we might look into those, thank you ☺️
This couldn't have gone better if you had planned it. It would have been so much worse had the roof collapsed before you cleaned out the building and taken down the ivy inside. It is actually easier to fix now than it was. There were no setbacks at all in my eyes. That tree was a major hazard and I really am surprised the roof had not already collapsed since the support over the doorway was broken in the middle and the beam on the centre wall was rotted out. Well Done!!! When you do the new roof you can put your solar panels up there and have power in the work shop. I would be tempted to clear out the other side and roof the whole thing at the same time. Everyone with property needs to have a chainsaw, a designated place to stack wood for drying, a compost area, a wood chipper, a tractor with cherry picking ability for fixing rooves and pruning trees (or a neighbour that has one to rent). You are doing amazing!!
You’re 100% right because we were wondering how we were getting up there to fix it….and now it is so much easier to start from scratch..and yes oh it would have been so much worse had it fallen on top of all of what was in it before we cleared out. Yes Ben has thought about solar panels going up there so I think once the new roof goes on solar will go up too 🤭 Strangely the neighbour the man who helped us sort the roof suggested the same with extending the roof all the way along to the other outbuilding rather than having the flat roof on the other. Ooh yes we would love a tractor after seeing how much you can do with one! A chain saw and a chipper are also on our list of wants! In fact I love your whole list!
Oh no, what a ****. Thankfully, you weren't in there when it came down. Sending you good vibes for no more calamities. X
Thank you, we could do with all the good vibes we can get right now! X
I a few months behind so apologises. I was watching your previous vlog where you had done a fantastic job of clearing the ivy. I thought to myself that there really weren't many roof timbers holding the tin up. Don't be too disheartened (easy to say) but it was going to happen at some point, thank goodness no one was hurt.
Don't apologise, you take all the time in the world, we aren't going anywhere.
That was the first thing we said to each other. If it didn't fall then, it would have fallen at some point, maybe with us in it.
The one gable needs taking down some and then rebuilding and we can then start and put a new roof on it. Dawn is itching to get out there in the spring to make a start on it. Saying that, Dawn is itching to get EVERYTHING done lol.
Thank you for watching and commenting and look forward to replying to anymore comments you might post as you watch more :-)
That is a beautiful stone building and you were blessed not to be in it when the roof came down. New roof and you will be away. What a great neighbour to have.
Yes, we really were! It really is beautiful 😍
It’s amazing what tree roots and ivy can do to a stone wall. You have enough to do with pointing that the purchase of a section of scaffolding might be worthwhile
Yes it really is amazing! As much as I don’t have a lot of love for Ivy anymore….it truly is an amazing plant for how resilient it is! We have bought some builders trestles for doing the joists so fingers crossed they will get us up enough to do the outbuilding too.
I am so glad that that whole unsafe roof is down, as well as the tree. Ofcourse always at an inconvenient moment but better now than on a full operational workshop. Count yr bessings. Nobody got hurt. Removal went smoothly thanx to priceless neighbor who deserved beautiful cooked dinner once your kitchen is operational. Now you can start safe rebuild
Yes it was quite inconvenient, but like you say, on the plus side we weren’t inside it and now it’s all done and dusted and needed doing anyway. We do a mean cheese toastie at the moment on the camping stove….wonder if that would suffice?! 😂
🤣a genuine 3 michelin star Toasti...
@wandakoehorst8734 exactly! What more could you want eh?! 😄 🤣
Man. There's never a dull moment 'round your place, is there? 🤣
You're not jinxed. It's just that fixing one thing, like the shed being overgrown with ivy, places stress on the next-weakest thing, like the roof being held on by (overgrown ivy &) rusty screws and happy thoughts.
Any tree that close to a building would have to come down- please try not to feel bad about having to take it down. And you've certainly struck it lucky in your neighbor: it takes a real stand-up guy to stand on an improvised tractor platform in high winds to do an emergency tree-felling.
Let's hope next week is a little more boring for you two.
Haha no it certainly isn’t dull! I think you’re right with fixing one thing placing stress on something else. I love the rusty screws and happy thoughts! Haha
Oh I know! It really was windy too, he was very skilful with cutting it too because he had two stone walls to miss, the one of the outbuilding and the wall behind him that is covered in Ivy, and he missed the both so well!
We’ll stick a hand up for a more boring week to come!
You are such hard workers you are doing brilliant work ❤❤❤
Aww thank you! It is hard going at times…can’t deny! Lol xx
I am watching your earlier vids, not in order, but it doesn’t matter.
Oh we will have a look to see why they’re not in order because that’s gotta be annoying 🫣
You two are completely AMAZING! When you get to gardening perhaps think of hydroponics.
There will certainly be enough water for it lol.
Amazing? Mad maybe hahaha.
No please I like longer videos
I was guilty (I being Ben) of cutting too much out of the really long videos, but after the response from our 1 hour one, we will have longer ones moving forward if the job in hand lets us film enough of it. Thank you for letting us know :-)
I like the longer ones too.
Hi there, just a suggestion. There is a lime hopper/mortar grout gun that is powered by a drill and it makes the process of lime pointing much quicker than just with a trowel. 😊
I have a feeling we may have seen someone use one of these on UA-cam. I had forgotten all about them.
Wow so lucky it happened while you were inside and not in the shed cleaning. You’re lucky to have such a great neighbour that was willing to help. It will be great too see the pointing done and you having a useable space
Ooh yes, we are definitely thankful that we were away from it as after the first couple of little cracks, it just went so quickly! Amazing neighbour, we have good neighbours all around us as it goes, so very lucky 🍀
Ivy was definitely holding it up, thank goodness it happened when it did. Great work getting it all the way down, hopefully it will go up smoothly, at least you'll know it will be safe again.❤
Yes, once we saw the thick ivy branches in the centre of the roof after it had fallen, it was as clear as day that that one was the centre support for it all. If only we had known lol. But, we expect it would have gone sooner than later though and yes, maybe with is in it.
We are looking forward to getting it all done up with a nice new roof.
Wow this gives you a chance to fix the walls
Yes! Very much looking forward to doing that! It will be our first time doing it so, maybe will practice on the interior before the exterior 😂
I’d be knocking that down at least it would give you better access to your land, replace with a shed and rethink the use of the stones at a later time. Love watching your videos I’ve just got back from touring west and south coast of Ireland, beautiful country
Ooh no, we couldn’t, it’s soo old I’d feel awful knocking it down, we’re going to try our very hardest to keep it standing. There’s so many stones around the land and in the buildings for us to use for other stuff. It truly is a beautiful country, we feel very lucky to be here everyday! 🥰
I think you all are doing a great job. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Thank you Jackie! X
So sorry that all these things are happening but ye will get there and ye work incredibly hard. Love your channel and good luck
Aww thank you! Yeah it did get a little trying when things seemed to keep going wrong 😕 fingers crossed the more we learn...things won't seem such a big deal when they don't go as planned lol
I’m so happy that you’re both safe! Just another detour, roof to the out building, as well as the stone work, but as a viewer I know y’all will overcome this. I grew up as well as participated in building, remodeling, etc. , my family was and still are diy-ers, we always encountered something. We just regrouped and tackled the issue at hand. Don’t give up or get discouraged, it can be fixed, and it will be better than it was before. 🙏 keep the faith. Y’all are doing a splendid job. And yes my “y’all” is from the South in Florida, USA. 😂😂 love your videos
Aww thank you! Yep, it was meant to be this way…the roof had to be removed at some point anyway…lol it just happened a little sooner then expected haha! Everything happens for a reason eh?! Bit scared to rid the other outbuilding of Ivy now though! 🤣 you just have to keep pushing on don’t you? You’re right it most definitely can be fixed and it will get a new shiny roof as a result and new mortar in its joints!
Ah well, I just keep seeing how really special and wonderful this will all be when you get it back right. Think of this as free demolition help, not a problem :). Much love to you.
Exactly! All it has done is brought Spring closer as that is when were were going to replace the roof. It has set us back a few days with starting the joists though, but they will still be there until they get replaced.... eventually :-)
Oh my goodness, you were so lucky not to have been hurt. I am so sorry that this has happened! I hope you are able to get it repaired without too much trouble and expense. Thinking of you both. XXX
Thank you Alison. It was a bit of a blow we must say but as you say, we are lucky no one was hurt. It is just a shed at the end of the day and we will repair and reroof as planned, just sooner then we anticipated.
Once fixed its going to be a very pretty shed, love the look of it.
It’s a lovely looking building isn’t it? We’re just waiting for it to rain now so it can wash the flagstones off! Haha
Absolutely happy all that happened was the roof falling in, but how well made those walls are! Even with the defects of time, they stood strong. After you found where the original door was, one can see that that was the main house by the trough that divides the road side wall area from the rest. The side by the wall was where the pigs, and cows would be kept, and the other side was the human living area. Anyway, I love how you both took it in stride. I mean of course after the initial shock and horror. I look forward to seeing the walls stabilize…and everything else you two are accomplishing.
I know they are standing strong, looking a little less well dressed that it did a few days ago though! We’re not sure with building use of old….we do know that, when the lady who lived here as a child, this building was used for the cows and the other I think she said had pigs in. There were around 7 buildings on the land at one point. Half of two of the buildings still remains along with 2 that are fully intact.
Short or long I love seeing your videos!!! I’m so sorry about the roof and hope you can salvage and get it fixed up to use!!
Thank you and I’m sure we can. It will get a new hat 🎩 and look beautiful once again!
I think 87 years says a job was well done at the time! I'm glad it is down, no apologies for that. It needed major repair and no one was hurt. Thank goodness! That building deserves a better roof. The ivy was holding it on. We had a shed once on the farm. The joke was that the roof was holding it up. To look at it, you would have thought so, too. It is going to be okay. Hang in there.
Yes I wholeheartedly agree…because Ireland experiences some crazy weather and it has stood strong throughout it all…if it hadn’t been for the Ivy I am sure it would have gone on for another 87 years! Haha with your shed, funny how things keep standing and defying gravity isn’t it?!
you may not read this but I should tell you that longer videos get less viewing time most people skip forward so if you keep yours under or around 30 min you will get more viewing time per video
Yeah we have found that too so thanks for the tip and most of our more up to date stuff aren’t very long apart from the odd few. We’ve learnt a lot from the early days of never having done anything like this before and hope that we are always improving as we go. We most definitely read and reply to every comment and have had some great advice from so many people, including you Stan so thank you. 🤩
I am worried that some of those unstable walls will collapse on your gazebo. The huge barn in the background of your last shot - would your neighbour allow you to use it to get the joists treated and cut?
Yeah it’s a worry of mine too…we will try and get it stabilised a bit before that goes up. It stores the feed for his cows, so unfortunately it wouldn’t be a great place for it.
Blimey Dawn Ben ,do hope the walls are safe. Fingers crossed you can Push forward now.sending 🤗. Auntie Chrissy and Uncle Dave ❤
Yeah they’re not too bad.. the top is a little loose so that will be the first bit we get started on. Thanks Auntie Chris. 😘❤️
I'd be thinking I'd level that shed completely and put my money and time into the main house. Save the stones and find another project later on. Getting the house sorted is a priority. Winters are cold in Leitrim.
Ooh no we couldn’t do that! It’s soo old and definitely worth keeping. We will have to lime the gable to secure it because of it backing onto the road, but the house is still our priority, definitely. We have heard winters are cold here! Lots of jumpers required!
I think you are both doing an amazing job despite any set backs and like you both say you are both safe and unhurt. I know you both have the motivation to keep going with the project. Good luck with all you do and I will keep on watching and following each special vlog cos I proper enjoy them.
Yeah it was a very lucky miss! Someone must have been watching out for us! Oh we definitely have the motivation to keep going, it’s just a joy to be here! Aww we’re really glad you like watching, we’re so blown away with people liking watching us ☺️😍
Well that sucked and as you said lucky it was only the roof , glad the all the walls did not follow also caving in.
Nice you got the tree taken down as causing wall damage. Might be easier getting the walls done with no overheads. Will you be getting a full tin roof or a sheet of polycarbonate in for extra light..
Even though its only an old shed but it is interesting to see before and after.
Not sure with the roof, Ben did say about getting one or 2 polycarbonate sheets instead of a full metal roof, so we will about that when we get to putting it back together. We were very lucky indeed to be clear of it when it went. 😬
Great out building for conversion in the future gite perhaps
Clive
Yeah it would lend itself very well to that!
I wouldn't say you're unlucky. You were actually very lucky the way the whole thing turned out. As well as baring down on the roof, the Ivy was also holding it up and in place from below. I was going to say you would be better bracing the timbers that were in there and finding and replacing the gap at the end with old corrugated sheets, just so the whole thing was stable. Putting a tarp on an old roof like that can act like a sail... your old roof could have ended up in the next county. :) Anyway, the old roof timbers were obviously not up to much, so it might be better to start from scratch with the roof anyway.
You have a lot of old timber and foliage to get rid of. I'd say it would be better to save your money for skips to take away old metal, glass and plastic etc., stuff you can't get rid of any other way, and build a fire pit in the middle of the parcel of land you have behind the shed. Make sure you have a good clearing and there are no overhanging trees or hedges etc. Take an area back to bear earth. Surround it with stones or blocks and just feed in small, manageable amounts of the old timber and ivy roots etc. It's a lot cheaper to get rid of ashes than solid wood. You might want to inform your neighbours before hand or they might think you're trying to send smoke signals. :)
I think it's great the way you are both able to maintain a positive attitude. You work very well together. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you're both safe and happy with what you're doing. You've taken on a lot... maybe a bit more than you had bargained for? Once you get the joists in and floorboards down you'll have four big rooms to play with. That will make life a lot easier on you.
You are absolutely right! It could have so easily been much worse! Thank goodness for the lime delivery turning up when it did! Strange thing Ivy isn’t it? Utterly destroys the very fabric of a building but then helps to keep it together too! Yeah a few of the locals said a tarp might not have been the best idea because it will end up pulling the roof off and in turn maybe knocking the walls too. It clearly fancied itself a new roof!
You’re not allowed to have bonfires here in Ireland anymore unfortunately. It’s a shame because we have sooo much to get rid of. A chipper hire might be the order of the day!
We have our moments of not so positive, but on a whole we are loving every minute of it all! Yeah I think maybe there’s a little more than we bargained for, but only in that there’s lots of important jobs that all need doing as urgently as each other! 😂 We really enjoy working together too, which is lucky!
I love ur channel but I can't hardly hear anything ur saying.. u may have to get a microphone and Bluetooth it to ur phone if that's what ur using to film.. Could anyone else comment if u have a hard time hearing them or is it just me.. The old buildings will be beautiful when u get thru ❤😊
Aww I’m really sorry about that…we did get some new mics and they are Bluetooth like the old ones, but I must admit they aren’t very good ones , one day soon we will try and invest in some really good ones. They are going to look beautiful when they’re all done aren’t they? ☺️
I’ve struggled with the sound all along, but unfortunately I am hard of hearing (wear hearing aids). It does sometimes spoil the videos as I’m not sure what exactly is being said. Having said all that I am enjoying the channel and I will persevere with it.
👏🌟👍🍀💐
🙂😎
The barn was the original house
We have a similar set up with the newer house and the very old house as a barn. Would be a lovely wee gite
We’re not sure, maybe a long while ago. The lady who lived here as a a child said it was for the cows and the other for the pigs. There were around 7 buildings on this bit of land back in the day, so it’s possible that at one point it may have been a house.
Just tear it down. You could build a proper shop in less time than it would take to try to “stabilize” that old building.
Nooo lol it’s over 200 years old! So much history there in that one building alone! So much time and energy went into sourcing the stones and building it, that it would be so bad for it to be pulled down. That and we like old, crumbly things…did you see the house?! 😉 😂
Sorry... but I do not like the sound of your videos.
It is like your "microfones" are closed.
The problem has to be solved! 😊
We don't like the sound on our videos either and we are on the second pair of microphones. The set we really want is the DJI Mic (2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case) but at €339 it will have to wait I am afraid unless DJI want to send us some lol
