I call it "Arc's on Fire".
Boltrend localizing was already a sign the gacha wouldn't last long, but the jp version announcing EoS like a week after the English was announced didn't help. The early story was eh, and just used plot to setup a gacha existing but later on it got decent. They retconned everything after arc 2 but recontextualized the arc 3 characters in arc 2's world in a nice way. I played from launch until the 2nd ranking event in global and quit since the top rewards were a fully awakened elc you couldn't get any other way at the time and the top places were all cheaters.
Hopefully Japan is over the "sudden big news about dead 20 year old game series turns out to be a gacha" they've been on for the last decade
What a depressing way for a series to go out, even if most of the entries were mid, no series deserves to end like this.

@@Caspicum Don't even remind me about Breath of Fire, that hurts way more since that's a series I grew up with. It also stings a bit more knowing that Capcom is releasing banger after banger nowadays, but they've pretty much forgotten the series.
That's what's pissing me off too. I'm not a fan of sequel begging or remake/remaster begging, I'm perfectly fine with a series ending, and being 'lost' to time, but Capcom are having a renaissance and completely ignoring their history with JRPGs. It doesn't even have to be Breath of Fire, just give me some cool JRPGs bro.

@@Caspicum Yeah seeing how Arc is kind of Dead by 2's ending, I still found it weird the series was still CALLED Arc the Lad when he's dead by the second game's conclusion! Maybe you could say ALEC the protagonist for 3 can count as he's a lad and if you take out the E in his name, it would say Arc! But then Twilight of Spirits doesn't have an ARC at all, only saving grace is Arc and the past characters do get mentions and well the main antagonist is basically the Dark One who got free again. Maybe it is good the storyline ended PERMENANTLY in Twilight of Spirits with the series overall big bad taken down for GOOD (No coming back PERIOD) in that game, even though 3 saw him sealed in the Ark
The fact that no one even bothered to rip the game for its remastered OST before the servers shut down is also one hell of a way for this series to end on a whimper

The most disappointing thing about Arc R to me was during the super limited beta test, I worked with others to supply a metric fuck ton of QA/localization work on making the Engrish into reasonably decent English and literally none of it was fixed. Six months, zero fixes. Kind of killed all my belief the company gave much care.
to be fair, that's likely just the nature of a mobile product. It's not made to be a 'good' game, it's made to get you hooked and syphon your cash. damn shame

3:45 As someone with legit ADHD and diagnosed and all that and a really crappy life from the start because of it, I can just say that not even we would enjoy any stuff like this (not that I can speak for everyone, ofc). I really miss the time where Arc: Twilight of the Spirits released, ugh x-x
I also hope that joke wasn't meant to in any way make a joke of ADHD and what comes with the condition (and I'm not talking about any hyperactivity nor inattentiveness here - ADHD, sadly, comes with a ton more; Executive Dysfunction and Emotional Dysregulation hold my beer, basically; like, the biggest issue is that everything related to executive function (ALL the stuff) is affected. And it's a nightmare. If it's more of a nightmare than what became of the Arc series, though, I can't say :)

That was more jabbing at the people who say they have ADHD and are never formally diagonsed, the internet ailments. I know most of our short attention spans, and addictive personality traits is more of a monkey brain thing, and due to a lack of discipline and self-awareness, we're all guilty of it to some degree, regardless of what we do or don't have. This looks really low quality compared to Langrisser M. And Langrisser M is a typical mobile skinner box, but not as bad as some games because you can max out every hero in 3 months with no gacha. But even with good gameplay and music, you are still playing a mobile skinner box p2w. Worth playing if you know what you are getting into.

Yugioh Master Duel can be played completely for free and you can get a top tier deck. You don't even have to dig through packs for specific cards. My phone is also too old to play the game so I literally can only play it on my pc.
Card games were the OG gacha shit. I remember dropping $8 for boosters trying to get useable things and it never happened. now i don't even see cardboard as a useable material, it's just gacha to me. i ship all my goods and wares in plastic, like a real endocrine disruptor.
I totally forgot I had played this until I saw Arc getting slapped. Then I remember how I was slapped by the devs for having any expectations of the series coming back.

Honestly, it'd probably give me a chuckle, I love that shit. Frankly, the more slurs you can fit in without getting filtered, the better.
I'd never defend micro-transactions, but I don't want to be one of those guys who pretends it's 100% corporations' faults for tapping a market. Micro transactions are scummy stuff, but people pay for them, and we can't exactly shame them or outlaw them into stopping. I mean, we can try, but whenever I hear moral arguments, my brain just shuts off, so I assume people with the addiction themselves are probably the same. Logic has always lost to an addictive mindset.
Best you can do is try to point to the absurdity of all it, and hope people wake up before they lose it all. Same idea with other destructive behaviours and addictions. As long as people can kick it before it completely ruins their lives, it's more of a learning moment than a royal fuck up. Everyone's got a vice, they just gotta learn to cage the beast. I mean the 2D mobile games basically aping FF6, but yeah the 3D ones look like My Sims which is not too far removed from the 3D FF DS games.

Yeah, it's one of those series where outside of Arc 2, Twilight, and maybe 3, it never really had a chance. Even the best games are pretty mid, and none of the characters are super memorable, there's not a lot to get hooked on. Say what you will about FIle Fancy, but it's got character, which is what people get addicted to.

Don't worry this might not be the last Arc game. Maybe this video's extreme popularity will bring Arc the Lad back in the form of a second gacha game that has even more expensive loot boxes. We can only hope.

Abit curious on why they had Arc the Lad 3 characters in it, likely would have been better to set it AFTER 3 since they cut off ALOT of the characters from that entry. But I guess putting Arc the Lad 4 AKA Twilight of the Spirits on the side, you could say 3 concluded the overall story with a Nice Red Bow what with the Dark One locked away forever (or until Twilight timeline thousand year later where he's beaten FOR GOOD) by the end of it. Guess they couldn't find anything to do! They COULD have used these SHINY graphics and art to REMAKE the Trilogy, but nah, what am I thinking, I'm a MAD MAN! Seriously see the good artwork of these gatcha that make me WISH they just remade the games their based on with them! Only one I like is Fire Emblem Heroes and I guess it's because Fire Emblem STILL get's main line entries and spin offs so I can't really hate it (And I don't really use much or ANY money on it at all) and feel it at least ENCOURAGES Nintendo and Intelligent to add more Entries and keep it's popularity, but I'm getting tired of the Gatcha,)
Only other good one is is Nier Reincarnation, that's about it I think! Found it funny how SaGa Gatcha reinvigorated interest along with the remake of Frontier that Romancing SaGA 2 is getting a remake and new entry with Emerald Beyond happened! So MAYBE they do, do some good
Why do all the gacha RPGs look like either FF6 or MySims? because all these games are build on top of a generic Unity template and all they have to do is make the character models and import them into the game and it just so happen that chibi 3D or 2D models are the quickest and cheapest to make. Alternatively, you could go the Genshin route and make 3 generic 3D character models (male, female and loli) and just dress them up differently, adjust their body proportions accordingly, maybe give them different hair and pray the thirsty weebs don't notice they all have the same face.
Same face has been an established fundamental since at least the 80s, they just found a way to hyper-monetize it. i literally can't tell a lot of shonen shit apart when they get near the end. naruto, bleach, one piece, all victims to same face. i'm sure other properties exist but who has the time?

There's a lot of weird parallels between Breath of Fire and Arc, specifically how there's 6 core games, with the final being a mobile title. The fifth games of each series were polarising and effectively killed the franchises for over a decade with a harsh direction shift. I wonder if it's just a classic JRPG curse?

@@Caspicum have you played DQV? One of my favourite features in that game was talking to my party members and monsters for some character specific flavour text after every little thing that happens, or even in each area of the game. Only the phone version of DQ IV has that in English

Octopath Traveler CotC and Another Eden are actually pretty good, especially Another Eden, in which the Gacha is completely optional as the free characters are pretty damn powerful. CotC has a bit more nefarious Gacha elements and clearly wants you to spend money but the gameplay is super fun, The story is surprisingly dark, and the music is out of this world good, just absolutely banger after banger.
There's just something about mobile games that feels shitty and I can't enjoy them. That said, I don't really like the actual Octopath games either, so I'd imagine a mobile version would be much the same. The way they're designed is so exploitative, even if you're not feeding it notes, it's still designed to get your brain addicted to the flashing lights and colours. More and more traditional games are going that way these days, but it's still not even close, mobile shit is a different level.
@@Caspicum CotC is very different from Octopath, the battle system is set for 8 party members at once and the Story structure is different. I think it's a bit short minded to hate on games solely for being on Mobile or f2p. Again, imo Another Eden is the best mobile game I have ever played with a story by Masato Kato who is an absolute legend of the JRPG industry. It completely broke the stigma I had against mobile gaming and if it got rid of the Gacha (which like I said is pretty much optional) and was sold normally I think it would be more widely loved.

I don't think they're driving enough cement pilons into the ground, you know? The best MMO or mobile game is still just an MMO or a mobile game to me. @@Caspicum this feels like trying to explain Tik Tok to a boomer ngl. The argument you just made makes so little sense, especially the comparison to MMOs. The reason one may not like an MMO is because they are always massive multiplayer experiences. Mobile gaming is not a genre, it's a medium, they could literally be almost anything. The buttons complaint is fair but as someone who is 6'4 with big greasy bear paws I have never had even the slightest discomfort with CotC or AE, or honestly any of the better mobile experiences, they are designed to be as streamlined and easy to control as possible. Also a great deal of them are on Steam now, including Another Eden! You can play what you want but to put down all these amazing experiences just cuz "mobile game bad" is extremely disappointing.
to be fair, tik tok is also garbage and melts your brain. Chinese spyware that influences idiots to do and believe idiot things and aides in the ever-decreasing attention span and IQ. Fundamentally, if you use it as a platform, everything on it adheres to a ruleset and standards that I fundamentally dislike, so even if I find gold on there, it's still within this framework that I despise, which is gonna taint my opinion. That's basically how I feel about mobile games. I hate touch screens, my thumbs have to cover a chunk of the viewing window for me to interact with the game, which I don't like. Touch screens are not as accurate, as a button press has two states. On and off. Touch screens have many more things to factor in and aren't precise.
Fundamentally, these games, particularly the free ones, are designed with monetization principals in mind, where a paid experience *generally* isn't. I know that's becoming less and less true, with full-priced console games featuring micro-transactions and there are some paid mobile games, and more power to them, but this is also why I barely play games after the year 2007. They are fundamentally different, and as a result, I find it harder to enjoy them. In the case of mobile games, I see what they're doing and how they're using exploitative practices to market themselves and get people into a new way of thinking, it's a fundamentally different way to deliver a piece of media to a player. Thus, mobile game bad. I like old mobile games on Symbian OSes, like there was some dinky Baldur's Gate game, and there used to even be ports of GBA games and stuff to phones like the N-Gage, they were okay.
I don't doubt there're a couple good, modern mobile games, but that's what, 0.0001% of the market? Exceptions don't invalidate the rule.
