@@AndrewKendall71 or at the very least a spinoff. Like maybe a show about Mal's friend Monty from the episode "Trash" and his crew? Make Mal's ex-mechanic the mechanic on Monty's ship for more connecting characters. Set the series after the movie, and dealing with a lot of the fallout created by the big reveal at the end of Serenity (I'm purposely keeping this spoiler free for Natalie). This way the characters from the original series can pop up from time to time in cameos so as not to interfere with their busy schedules. And when they can get all of the surviving actors back (RIP Ron Glass) they can even do a big crossover event.

The thing I love about Jayne - for all his moral failings, he is a professional spacer. Its subtle, but you'll notice that he never messes up any of the rigging/equipment, and he knows exactly what to do during an emergency. Its the reason that Mal keeps him around (its not JUST to do violence). I think it really lends a lot of depth to what could otherwise be a one dimensional character.

      @@Leon-wz1js Oh absolutely!
One thing that was interesting to me, being a Trekkie, was people on a discussion forum I was on talking about how "bad" of an engineer Kaylee was given this disaster comparing her to the likes of Scotty and LaForge. And I'd make the argument in her defense that she wasn't an "engineer" she was a mechanic and a mechanic is there to maintain or repair something not to constantly work on it to keep at 100%
And, further, even the best of engineers can only do so much with so little and if there's a part failing or nearing failure and it's a part that you can't just wave a wand over to repair then, yeah, you need to replace it and Mal wouldn't or couldn't replace the part, apparently not realizing how critical it was.
You could maybe argue Kaylee didn't realize how critical the part was and wasn't conveying that if it failed there'd be an explosion and such, but we see that maybe her experience was still fairly normal or this part failed inside a 1% percentile of a catastrophic failure instead if just going kaput and shutting the engine off.
There's also a nice continuing bit of continuity with this episode in a couple episodes where they're in a junkyard on a core world and Wash finds a catalyzer part and chucks it into the air.

I think Joss wrote that line and this episode right after his mother died.
I never noticed how true that statement was, until my parents died, separately, but years after the series ended. You can die sitting right next to someone else, while they are dying too, but it doesn't matter, you still die alone. We're frightened and alone inside ourselves when we die. We're selfish and individual creatures. Selfish in that we think about ourselves when we die. We might think about others and worry "are they going to be okay without me around?" but when the time comes, we think first and foremost about ourselves: "Where am I going?" "How can I avoid this?" "I don't want to die."
The cold, hard truth about dying, is we placate ourselves by telling ourselves that our being there, at the time of someone's death is meaningful, but in truth, it's meaningless, and while I haven't died to attest to this, I don't think the fear of dying is commuted simply by having others around.
      "Everybody dies alone."

To take it one step further - it's not just our death where we're completely alone. Every single moment of our lives is spent entirely in our own heads, through the lens of our own personal interpretation of what is going on, which is entirely dictated by all the unique events and circumstances that have led us to that particular point (not to mention the influence of our genes on our cognitive and deductive abilities), resulting in an impossibility of ever truly sharing a moment with someone else in a way where you both are feeling and experiencing exactly the same thing. I just love this episode so much. The way it's structured and comes back around to the opening scene again to tie everything together, the pacing of it, the way it's so tense and you feel like "What the hell happened?? Why's he alone? What's going on? Where's everyone? Are they okay? What will happen to Mal?" and I love the lighting changes, from the golden hues of the "happier" flashbacks to the cold blue of the present scenes, establishing that something is very, very wrong. The whole thing from start to finish leaves you on the edge, waiting and worrying and wondering, and in between you get to see all these fascinating ways in which the crew came together, and see it tie back to this heartwarming moment when you see Mal first lay eyes on his firefly ship, like he was destined to find it and destined to be with these people who have become his family... it's just SO GOOD. Beautifully written, beautifully acted. The whole thing feels like a work of art to me. I remember when I first saw it, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and so moved by everything. This episode gives me chills. 💙

The non linear progression is jarring enough to create anxiety but simple enough for the watcher to understand the changes plus the flashbacks help give the watcher enough of a break to not only avoid burn out with the tension but to also make the watcher drop their guard enough that the episode doesn't have to constantly continue to build tension

As a good captain, Mal knows how to motivate his crew. We see Mal use the gentle approach with Kaylee to snap her out of her fear to get her concentrating on diagnosing the problem.
We also see how Mal pushes Wash to snap him out of his despair over Zoe to search for solutions. Mal slams Wash against the wall.
MAL to WASH: "You're gonna get to the bridge and get us on our feet, because if we can't do for Zoe here, you're gonna have to be the one that saves her."
When Wash does all he can we hear Mal tell him "Go see to your wife."
We get a bit of humor during the drama in a yelling match between Mal and Wash on the bridge. Jayne steps in as the voice of reason.
JAYNE: "What do you two think you're doing fightin' at a time like this. You'll use up all the air!"
*We also get insight to how Mal prioritizes his thinking during and after an emergency:*
*Mal wants to increase everyone's chance of rescue and survival. He orders the crew to separate between the 2 shuttles and leave himself on the ship.*
INARA: "Mal -- you don't have to die alone."
    MAL: "Everybody dies alone."
*When Mal knows all is safe again - he needs reassurance that the crew will all be there with him when he finally gets rest.*

Get a DVD set with the commentary track, and re-watch "Out of Gas"... First - one of the FINEST episodes! The lighting you commented about? It varies with which flash forward/back/present they're in. The Commentary spells out a LOT of behind the scenes stuff. For example; that "big red button" Wash installs? Alan Tudyk stole that from the prop department, and gave it to Joss after they found out Firefly was cancelled. He told Joss Whedon; "Your miracle gets here, you hit that button, and we'll come running". Watching the DVDs just a year after Firefly cancelled, that had me bawling to hear the ACTORS talking about what a special show it was to work on.

The Serenity's set design really paid dividends with this episode. It was a complete set that didn't need any rearranging during filming, unbroken aside from being split into two sections, one for each level of the ship. Meaning you could walk from one end to the other in one go, so not only did the cast become very familiar with the layout over time, but the viewer eventually starts to feel at home as well. On top of allowing for some really awesome shots like the first person scene in this episode.

I'm definitely one of the people that counts this as my favorite episode. Just, absolutely brilliant writing and filmmaking.

The title of the episode is a subversion of the general understanding of the phrase, because the gas in this case is oxygen.
