    Hi, that was a nice review. I would like to ask if it's possible to use the bulb with my 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, but an iPhone controlling it connected to a faster, 5 GHz network? And will that still work with HomeKit or only via Yeelight app?

    This looks awesome, and it appears that the bulb can do bright pastel colors. I am using Gledopto bulbs with my Hue system, which have very dim colors cuz Gledopto decided to not use white LEDs for colors. I have been using HomeKit a lot with my iPad, and I am planning to stay with it, so I think a Yeelight bulb will be a good addition to my system.
    Also, the video is 480p for me, on an iPad Pro. Nonetheless, great video!

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому

      Hey Burak - The Yeelight’s do have a really good color spectrum. It’s also got a nice Yellow and Green which can be hard to find in LED bulbs. The early Hue’s were quite bad at those colors. Appreciate you mentioning the 480p issue. I know UA-cam was having some issues with that on the iOS app, hoping it gets resolved soon. The video was posted at 1080p. I haven’t found a big enough reason yet to make the jump to 4K posting. :) Takes a lot longer to post and the quality difference isn’t that big of a difference for most people.

    Have you done any homebridge type stuff to connect things that aren’t officially supported? I want to make a HomeKit camera using an old iPhone running a ip web video app that it pulls the data from and pushes to a virtual HomeKit device but I’m a bit lost.. 😅😅. Could you maybe do a video on that?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  4 роки тому

      Hi Alex - I’ve played with Homebridge, but to be honest - it can get deep down the rabbit hole quickly. I’ve stayed away from anything other than really basics because once you go off the path that is covered by things like Hoobs it can quickly get really frustrating for both the people trying to get it to work and the people trying to help them. :P. I’ll take a look at it again and see if there’s something I can out together. To be honest - for the cost of a Eufy 2K indoor can, you’re probably better of going in that direction. Less expensive and less headaches. :)

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  2 роки тому

      Assuming that you have an active HomeKit hub (AppleTV HomePod or iPad in HomeKit Hub mode) located in the same location as your bulb, you will have remote access to control your bulb.

  • @coding_harry
    @coding_harry 3 роки тому +2

    Can I use it if I'm at the university and I'd like to turn it on for example? Just like a remote use?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому

      Need to unpack that a little. Short answer is “Absolutely!” If you connect it to Apple HomeKit only you will need a device to do perform the HomeHub feature which will stay at the university and allow you remote access to the bulb. You can also connect the light to the Yeelight cloud directly and still have remote control to turn it in or off, but that will be at the expense of having your usage data sent to their cloud. If you’re ok with that totally cool (some of the automations require connecting to their cloud.). Some people are privacy purists and don’t want the data leaving their control so I wanted to try and explain the different cases.

    Thanks for showing how you created a Siri Shortcuts. I’m a little confused on how you then add those scene shortcuts into somewhere useful, though? Is it possible to then add that button onto the HomeKit / Home App? Or is the only way to activate the shortcut by talking to Siri or a homepage app button?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Jesse - Unfortunately, this doesn’t work in the way we want it to yet... Siri Shortcuts and Home Automation still isn’t joined in the way that we want it to be although there’s some loose integration. You can’t integrate a Siri shortcut into a Homekit automation right now ( at least not the way that I’ve found ) but you CAN do the opposite and include a Homekit scene into a Siri Shortcut set of actions. I’ve started picking up a few different devices that support Siri Shortcuts and I’ve started to use a spare iPhone ( old phone ) as the shortcut personal automations device. This means I can use the phone to trigger based on any of the personal automation triggers including time. I’ve used this in the Switchbot Candle video to turn my candles on and off by IR, as well as used it with an Amrbt Air Purifier that supports Siri Shortcuts through the Tuyu LifeSmart application. It’s not perfectly integrated into Homekit, but it’s at least within the Apple ecosystem. :) I do plan on doing a video on the 20201 Smarthome set as I haven’t done a refresh of the tour in awhile.

      Do you have this bulb? I struggled with the connection so much in the beginnng. I knew how to do it but I couldn’t keep it connected!! Its been about a year so I tried again yesterday, whicb funny enough, our whole local area kept losing electricity/wi-fi. Anyway, I don’t find it user friendly. It’s always falling off the network and Idk. how many times I had to go back to step one to start over!
      As of last night though, I had it on blue @10%, woke up this am w/ it still. on the setting I had it on, and🎉hurray, for the first time it stayed connected all night and I was easily able to shut it off with a tap in HomeKit… I guess we’ll see how long I’ll keep it in for. I’m hoping, for good this time!

    Hi, I also have two of these bulbs, it happens that someone turns off the bulbs on the switch and disconnects, my question would be, if I added a Homepod mini I could control them regardless of whether the switch is bstins or not? Or it's just for remote control.

    Your review has me thinking about taking the plunge on these things. My big hangup is that I have a ceiling with six cans in it on one switch. I'd like to split that up in three zones of two bulbs each. How hard would that be?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Jeff! It should be super easy to create three zones of two bulb each. Apple homekit, Amazon, Google, as well as the Yeelight app allow you to place multiple bulbs together which can be managed as a "zone". The one thing you're going to want to watch is that the bulbs will not be controllable if someone turns off the light switch. There are multiple solutions to this from just turning the light switch back on and dealing with it, tape on the switch, or you can purchase switch covers that will help to prevent people from accidentally turning off the switch. For me it's worth it to have the color lights - but it is something to be aware and plan for as it can be pretty frustrating. :)

      Mine worked fine so I don't have direct experience but I can share what I would do to troubleshoot. If it's in the Yeelight app, make sure that you have the latest firmware update on the bulb. Then factory reset the bulb and see if you can add it using the Homekit standard process. If you can't see the bulb to add when it's in a factory default state, I would contact Yeelight support or return it to where you bought it and ask for a new version as it's most likely got a fault in it.

    Hey! So I’ve been having this issue with my light that maybe you can help me with (this was the first walkthrough video I’ve seen that uses an iPhone to pair the device so cheers on that). I have no problem setting the light up in my Home app. The issue always comes when trying to sync the device from my Home app to the Yeelight app. Even if it works after I turn the light off once the device can’t be found until I reset it again and do the whole process again. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong? The next step may just be to contact the company directly but if you can offer any help before it comes to that I’d really appreciate that! Enjoy your day!

      @@Homekitgeek I have the same exact issue with having to reset it over and over again. I bought the light about a year ago and took it out. Until last night it had been sitting on a table collecting dust.
      I had such a hard time keeping it connected that I wasn’t in a hurry to try again. Last night I decided to go for it. It was as tricky as the first time, although we began losing power & WiFi as soon as I began 🤬just my luck! I did get it to stay connected all night but this am my iPhone changed from 2.4 to 5??? No idea why; 2.4 had not lost signal strength or anything, so I had to reset it again!

  • @Arctis34
    @Arctis34 3 роки тому +1

    I have a problem with these. Whenever I change the color away from the white setting to some of the colors, Homekit cannot bring it back to the bright white setting it instead gives white in the RGB mode which is way dimmer than the normal white mode. It works fine from Xiaomi's app. But that defeats the purpose of a Homekit bulb. Do you have a solution for this as I think it is weird they would oversee something like this.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Bert, I wish I had a solution for this. As you can see from the other comments, you aren’t the only one who’s seeing a difference between functionality, colors and white temp between the Home app and the Yeelight/Xiaomi apps. I 100% agree that they should be the same regardless of which app your in. Unfortunately this isn’t something that came up until after I had already launched the review. At least you know you’re not alone?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Carl! The Firewalla is an interesting little box. Essentially I use it to try and figure out what connections my devices are making to the outside world. I'm seriously thinking about doing a network setup video - to be honest I"ve avoided this for a LONG time as my network really wasn't anything any normal person would have in their homes. I'm a network professional for a living so I've got a bunch of enterprise class gear. I've cut out a lot of that recently and almost standardized on Ubiquity Unifi gear though so it might be useful to do a video on. Still probably overkill for most people, but it might be interesting for some. :)

    • @carldevans1
      @carldevans1 4 роки тому +1

      @@Homekitgeek Thanks for the reply. I understand that your setup may be overkill for most people, but I would definitely be interested in what you use. Having a reliable network is really the 'Step 1' of setting up a smart home. Else, you end up with a bunch of expense smart devices that don't work properly. It's a bit surprising that more content creators don't discuss that side of it (I've searched).
      I use Ubiqiti's Amplifi HD router with a second HD as a mesh point with ethernet backhaul. I've been looking into the Unifi system but still don't know a ton about it. Thanks.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  4 роки тому +1

      No problem at all! I love hearing about what people find interesting. Means I can make more videos that people actually want to watch. :) I'll definitely look into this in more detail. Totally agree 100% about this - everything starts with a strong foundation. I believe that the majority of smartphone issues are due to poor network planning. Unfortunately, it's still a dark art that few understand - I'll see what I can do to put something together that doesn't go too deep. Fine line between doing something useful and losing people in details... Thanks again for the comments! Really appreciate it!

    Do these work good with google assistant?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому

      They do work with Google assistant as well. I find it to be a similar experience to HomeKit in that it’s a basic experience. Most of the dynamic scenes need to be programmed and run through the Yeelight app. Granted I also haven’t really dig into the Google side. Just enough to connect it and verify that it does work.

    Would you say these are better than hue ?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  4 роки тому

      Totally different experience. This is brighter than most of the Hue bulbs for sure. But the Hue will be generally faster to respond because if the zigbee protocol. Also the Hue bulbs can also be used with the Hue sync which is kinda awesome. It’s a usecase based comparison for me. The Hue lights are great for outdoors or for use in a entertainment area with the Hue Sync. But if you just need a color light bulb for a lamp in a corner, the Hues are probably too expensive. The Yeelight is perfect for this kinda of application.

      Do you notice a difference between zigbee and WiFi response times?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  4 роки тому

      Zigbee is almost always faster than wifi as a general rule. If you’re using Hue remotes or Hue motion sensors with the Hue bulbs it’s almost an instant change. As soon as wifi and IP protocol gets involved it tends to slow everything down. In general devices are going to be zigbee, Ethernet, wifi, then BLE in terms of speed. Bluetooth used to be MUCH slower but has gotten much better since the BLE 4 spec was released.

      Strange. My experience with this bulb has been pretty solid - but given the comments it seems like I’ve been really lucky. Best I could suggest is a factory reset and see what happens.

      @@Homekitgeek seems to be a firmware upgrade issue. After I set up all lights in Yeelight App and updated the firmare, all started to work. And so far so Good! Loved the hues and responsiveness to Siri. Not much "scenery" functions exposed to HK though, my next test will be the VOCOlink ones.

      hey Graham! Thanks for the feedback and keeping me honest. Given that the HomeKit method of adding products has been consistent for the last 5 years, I guess I sometimes assume that people understand already how it works. Totally good call to point out that’s not the case and some are new to the HomeKit camp. Appreciate it!

I thought they all were, but got one from Amazon that's not HK ready and so there were no codes to scan, etc.. I didn't read the description well enough to see it wasn't ready for HC. So look forward to 8 years from now when things should be so much smoother! Keep up the good work!

    So no hub and no Google nest just bulb?

    • @Homekitgeek

      No hub necessary as it’s a wifi bulb. Yeelight does have a cloud based Google Assistant (nest) skill so you could control it that way. Not something I’m doing though so can’t confirm.

      Sorry but I’m not sure how to be more clear here. This bulb does NOT a require you to buy Google Nest. It connects to your wifi network and then you can use it with Apple HomeKit or other supported ecosystems. You don’t need to buy a Google Nest hub to use it with Apple HomeKit.

    This lamp has a annoying bug with Homekit. Through homekit you can't reach 100% brightness, only with Yeelight App/Mi Home you can.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  3 роки тому

      I've heard that this is the case, to be honest, I have it all controlled through automations so it's not something I've noticed or would be bothered by. I totally get why it COULD annoy someone, it just doesn't bother me. Really appreciate you pointing this out though! It's something that I'm sure some people would want to be aware of before they spend their hard-earned dollars. :)
