- Megadeth guitarist Kiko Loureiro makes a surprising announcement about his future with the band. The Megadeth guitarist has been absent from the group since September of this year.

Yeah, mine too! I followed Kiko before he got in the band, and I was so happy when he joined Megadeth. But hey, Megadeth will keep going, and just hope Kiko is doing well.
Dave must really respect Kiko. That says a lot.

I saw Megadeth back in September with Teemu, and he was great! It was an unbelievably killer show, but something definitely felt missing. I love Kiko. He is a part of my favorite (living) Megadeth lineup, and it would be devastating to see him go. But even if he does, I will always have the utmost respect and love for his work and personality. Rock on, brother!!
Kikos a phenomenal guitarist & seems like a great guy. Been following Megadeth since the beginning & he kind of became the face of Megadeth with his behind the scenes videos. As a long time musician myself it's a tough decision sometimes but family always comes first. When my two sons were very little I turned down opportunities to move to LA which in the early 80s was the thing to do... I'm from Buffalo NY. but my kids came first. Hopefully everything is good with his family. Great videos.
His Instagram post just prior to this statement was a serene silouetted landscape that stated, "Change is the only constant in life"
Really close with a cousin of Kikos who resides near his home town. Family struggles, mostly due to his kids being at an age where their development is crucial is becoming more burdensome due to the tour schedules and being alway. It’s a tough situation and for Kiko, family comes first.

Not sure I'm quite getting this and correct me if I'm wrong but when you sign on the dotted line to write, record and tour with a world famous metal band don't you expect to be away from home a lot??

Hope he can rejoin in the new year. I think Kiko was the best guitarist since Marty. He also posted videos of the tour and really put alot in to this for the fans. Other members of Megadeth hadn't done that.

Sad to see him not performing and have had the privilege to have seen him live many times. As a Megadeth fan I’m used to line up changes and it keeps the band fresh and interesting. Looking at the length of the absence I doubt he will return and how many years does Dave have left in him before he himself starts to wind down. The good thing about Megadeth is they always deliver on lead guitarists.
Kiko is very good, including in compositions! Dave must wait for him to solve the problems. This last album was one of the best I've heard in years!
The way I read Kiko's letter is it seems he's thinking of moving on and leaving Megadeth. Maybe with the time he was away, he felt he was getting a little burnt out from the heavy touring. Which caused him to miss his family and especially his kids as they grow up. We wish him all the best and thank him for his contribution to Megadeth as well as the band Angra! God Bless him and his family as well!

I like Kiko because he can play absolutely ANYTHING, any style of music. I always go back to that video of him ripping fusion with Guthrie Govan. I love the work he's done with Megadeth and they've put out some unbelievable BANGERS! It makes me sad to see him depart but Teemu is a shred god as well. Ah, I just hope Kiko will return one day but who knows?
Hmm, I would like to see Kiko, Ellefson, and Marty get together and make some music, lol. Been a fan since the beginning but not any longer since Ellefson's firing. That's when Megadeth died IMO.

@@bahamut724the way I see it is Mustaine was fired from a band, Metallica, and now he's looking at making a career of firing other people from his own band.
The current lineup with kiko and dirk is probably the best we've gotten since menza and friedman.

It's clearly something very serious and personal. Not everything needs approval or understanding from the peanut gallery that is the internet. I hope whatever it is Kiko can resolve it or more realistically absorb it and that we never find out what happened to whom. Godspeed Kiko and Family and huge respect to Dave and the guys for being who they are through it all. :)

Kiko is so much more than just a great guitarist..restricting him to just that is practically an insult..he is a musician, a virtuoso, a writer/composer, a professor of music theory in his own right..his knowledge and vast talent are awe inspiring. I can speculate that Kiko might find being the guitarist for Megadeth after 9 years a bit of a grind.. we musicians all know that there is no money in sales now, no one makes record/CD sales royalties anymore, downloads are a joke owned by a Mafia, so live dates/touring IS your livelyhood..so everyone tours 'til dead. Travel/Hotel/Soundcheck/Play Show/Sleep/REPEAT 100 times and see how YOU feel. Kiko just might be over playing the same show over and over like a robot and not knowing what city he wakes up in.. JUS' SAYIN"... love you Kiko!

Well it's all relative to your POV..I'm speculating wildly, I really have no idea what Kiko thinks, it's just a wild guess. In truth, it could be absolutely anything and he's not letting us in on it yet.

My 2 cents as a old fan of him since Angra and his solo work here in Brazil: the guy is a world class professional and very reserved. If Im not mistaken, he and his wife have a daughter... I just hope their are well and healthy. :)
They have three children. First they had a daughter and then they had twins (a boy and a girl). Twins turned 7 this year and possibly started school. So, maybe that's what caused difficulties 🤔

Megadeth is, and always has been, Dave Mustaine. Everyone else is just a paid musician who's around for however long they can tolerate Dave, usually. Don't get me wrong, I love Dave. But's lets be real. I'm old enough to remember when Dave was still in Metallica, so I've seen it all.

It sounds like Kiko is just taking care of some dad stuff with his kids. Dave loves him so unless he doesn’t want to come back, it sounds like he’ll be with Megadeth again. He did say ‘see you soon’.
In a deleted Facebook post, it sounds like Dave gave Kiko his walking papers today. Thanked Kiko for his 9 years and supported his future endeavors

Kiko Loureiro is amazing! I prefer his solo work much more than anything he did with Megadeth. Glad to have him back as a solo Artist.

You and I share a very similar wardrobe of rock band T-shirts from mostly the 90s and early 20’s. lol!
Being a long time fan of Megadeth, when Marty left, it was very sad but i also wondered who could really fill that shoe left vacant. Marty's contributions were not just the solos but also his partnership in composition that elevated the complexity of Megadeth music to new height. The end result, has gained a lot of respect in the metal community. No disrespect to the other guitarists who filled in after Marty. They were all great players but somehow, the chemistry in music writing with Mustaine felt amissed. I have to admit it made me stop following Megadeth then.
Until i heard Kiko's and the album Dystopia. He truly is amazing in his technical skills and most importantly, his ability to write great music with Mustaine. His contributions drawn me back to Megadeth music once again. I really enjoy the 2 albums that he did with Megadeth, they are true masterpieces. I wish Kiko all the best in his family life and music career, and certainly look forward to hearing more great music from him in the future.

This is what a classic PR move is like. They’re buying time and keeping fans hoping and engaged so they won’t all roll their eyes at yet another member change. It’s PR 101. Knowing a bit of what goes on behind the scenes in these situations, I am almost certain that this is what it is. There’s a member change happening and considering the history they just want to land this plane on a smoother surface.
When has Mustaine ever had an issue with firing band members outright? Why would he sugarcoat Kiko's firing?

Mustaine has mellowed out so much from years ago. Any band member pulled that ‘I’m taking time off’ shit back in the day they were out. Kiko is a great player but quality guitarists are a dime a dozen. The dude will be lucky if his job is still there when he’s ready to come back from whatever it is that’s keeping him from the band
Kiko is also co composer with Dave so he's harder to replace.

I think he's done with megadeath I got that feeling when he was recently playing alongside Marty Friedman on their Japan show and later appearances, he didn't seem to be thrilled about it and this last letter sounds like a farewell I also think Teemu Mäntysaari is a better fit for megadeath.
As goodas he is, Megadeth has gone through so many great players, he really will not be missed besides the people who know him personally.

Definitely the take of someone who has no idea what caliber of musician Kiko really is. He's not a mindless shredder like Broderick. Teemu is also an incredible player but Kiko is a high level composer and writer, which cannot be said about any other former Megadeth guitarist other than Marty and even then I would still say Kiko is the more advanced song writer.

Teemu is only up and coming if you only consider massive mainstream appeal like Megadeth. He's well known in Europe for being an ex member of Wintersun with Jari Mäenpä.

@@kylebatteson9572 They are though. Anyone into metal the last 20 years knows Wintersun. It's just that Megadeth, like Metallica and Iron Maiden, surpassed that level and are up there being known together with pop artists etc, it's a different level of mainstream.
They became mainstream in the 80's, not only is that more than 40 years ago, that was the only decade where some metal bands could make it to the "real" mainstream and be known around the world in a really short time.

Kiko is one of the best guitarists in the world with his personal touch especially on the last album which is one of the best albums. For his knowledge of music is silly to talk about, because we are quite familiar with his previous group Angra. I just don't understand these political words "extended absence". When Ellefson was fired it said "fired". Or there is some contract for the future, which in my opinion is rather unfair to Teemu who is a hell of a talented guitarist, he comes from European heavy metal which is far more advanced than American and limits him in inventiveness, creativity , creating new music. How does it feel to have a "shadow" over you? At least that's how I understand all this. They played 5 songs with Marty and they all "filmed" that Marty is coming back. Now Kiko is "fired" or on "extended absence".
Teemu is 36. He is too old for this band. Other members are 20-25 years older than him. So, yes it's going to be restrictive in creativity because they are not creating any new music. They are just touring and playing old songs. So, I see it just as an opportunity for Teemu to make money but after that he should go back to his band so that he can work with his contemporaries and not have his creativity restricted.
Love Kiko but if he's not going to be back, lets not drag it out... Dave should call Marty. He already showed the chemistry is still there during his recent appearances. As great as Temu has been since Kiko left, he'll always be seen as a fill in - at least to me.
Though the question is, can Dave afford Marty? I heard the last time Marty was offered to comeback he'd have to take a pay cut from what he was earning flying solo in Japan. And this wasn't just strictly for himself he was thinking of, but his manager as well. So yea, if Dave wants Marty back full time, he best reach into that Gibson money he's getting now.

I think the Marty “reunions” opened an unhealed wound. It diminished Kiko’s role in Megadeth. The reflection posted makes me think he’s done with this band and is ready to do his own thing instead of being Dave’s latest and faceless shredder. Chris and Marty will always be the best players this band ever had because they have signature styles that don’t come across as non distinctive shred. None of the post Chris and Marty solos can match the catchiness and compositions those guys offer. I can’t really replay any of the other guys solos in my memory but I can with a Poland or Friedman lead.

Well, the (old) school solos were/are based more on phrasing, not super-fast videogamish arpeggios and ping pong style tapping excercises.

I think Guitarist join megadeth so they can say they were in megadeth. They soon realize or already knew once in the band creativity is sidelined because ultimately dave does everything and tells everyone what to do. regardless megadeth is my favorite band and dave's dictatorial style of his band has worked for him.

Kiko is a straight up good human being with a good heart and he’s also a family man. I could never be on the road away from my kids like that tbh.
Ok so heres the thing.. Dave knows he can tour without Kiko.. If Kiko needs the time.. And Dave believes he does then he will give it to him.. He trusts Kikos choice of replacement and is happy enough with that choice to feel a full year without Kiko will be possible.. If the part can be played then he'll do it.
They are still using the absense not leaving word.. So take it as written.. Kiko will be back.. I believe he wants to come back and has expressed that to Dave but needs more time.. Dave knows hes found his creative partner in Kiko.. Daves learned a lot and has played with a lot of people over the years.. Instead of trying to force someone to stay, squeeze them to tightly... Or just bin them and burn a bridge Mustaine knows I feel that someone like Kiko doesnt come along often.. He will do what he can to keep Kiko in the band.. If that means doing this so be it..
Same goes with Dirk.. Hes got a fanstaic drummer in Dirk.. Very attuned to what the band needs and what made the druns special and cool on those first few albums all the way though to himself.. LoMenzo great bassist.. I think he was the best part of that 06-10 period of the band..
I think frankly speaking Kiko is part of the business.. He has gotten closer to Mustaine than anyone else in the last 20 years and has been more involved in decisions and creative than anyone else in the last 20 years.. So it will pain him to step away from the work he has put in.. He has been working to be very much an integral part of the Megadeth fabric.. The fans love Kiko.. Daves not dumb.
Hes talked off the cuff earlier in the year before Kiko had to step away that some people are musicans and some people are stars..
And that sometimes there are 3 musicians and 1 star in the band.. That becomes an anchor to success and you seek to replace them with stars.. But then one could be a Megastar and so on.. It was fascinating listening.. But the thing I took from that was kind of Mustaines mindset when it comes to who he hires and fires.. Mustaine is the superstar.. Might even go as far to say hes a megastar.. Ellefson became a star.. Poland is a musician.. Gar was a musician.. Both were capable of being stars.. Jeff is a musician, could have been a star, blew it.. Chuck was a musician.. Marty and Nick both stars.. Marty was becoming a superstar.. In Japan he is.. Remains a star in the west.. Degrasso and Petrelli were both stars.. Glen and Shawn are musicians.. Broderick is a musician.. LoMenzo is a star.. Adler is a star.. Kiko is a star.. Dirk is a star.. Kiko finds himself in the same shoes as Marty.. On the cusp of becoming a superstar.. Dave seeing the music world in this way was sort of eye opening in a way with regards to past players and their highest status.. There was a period where that band almost started from scratch again in the mid 00s.. And Mustaine had to be surrounded by musicians people who couldnt break though to stardom.. Drovers, Broderick.. They were replaced with people that could and elivated the work instantly.
Thats the difference.. If you want to be a Megastar thats the top 100 artists in the world it takes hard work and talent.. Certianly to do it in metal at this point would be quite an achievement.. Megadeth today is a top 800 band worldwide.. Metallica is top 120.. 10 years ago Megadeth was probably outside of the top 1000 bands worldwide.. Metallica would have still been around 120..
Megadeth has seen a resurgence of popularity in the last 10 years in part because it once again has stars filling the roles.. Its not just Mustaine and appendages.
We will see what the next year brings.. I'm yet to get a proper read on Teemu to know if he is creative going to work to the same level Kiko was.. He can certainly play the parts live and thats all he will need to do.. But should the point come that he becomes the official lead player for the band I'm not sure if he can achieve stardom.. Its possible he will be another Broderick someone with chops but not good creatively.. I dont know... I personally dont want to see that I want Kiko to return and be energetic and happy to be back.. No slight to Teemu at all but Kiko is the guy that should ride the Megadeth horse out into the sunset with Mustaine..
Selfishly I did think.. Man.. This is going to effect the next album now.. I was really hoping for a quick follow up within 2 to 3 years.. If Kikos out for a year thats going to be 2 years at that point.. Either were going to be waiting a while again for another release or some miracle will happen..
But Mustaine in post release interviews and stuff was saying we'll be back was put as the last track to assure people we are back and we will be back sooner than you think next time because of the delays to the last album from Daves health to Covid, lockdowns ect.. I know its pretty selfish though to just want them to work endlessly for my entertainment.
This just extends the already present mystery and speculation, it doesn't offer any clarity at all. In fact, I think it muddies the waters even more and definitely sounds like he's negotiating his exit.
I was hoping for Kiko to be the future of Megadeth. But we can see Kiko still care for Megadeth he even refer his friend Teemu a great guitarist while he is away. We all see Dave likes Kiko and they are enjoying each other's companies.
Of course hes referring Teemu, is in his own interest, hes not gonna go n leave megadeth in the shit is he?

Truth is Kiko has probably seen a side of Dave he doesnt like and wants out, probably something to do with that Marty reunion recently or realised he will never get the love Marty once had so just wants out.
It must be something serious for Kiko to NOT wanna play live. I think something legit is going on and he may leave on good terms.
