Nice review. Would this lens be appropriate for shooting 5D Mark iv 4K cropped video footage? Or is this too extreme? I could justify its purchase more if I wasn't just using it for super wide angle stuff. BTW, I already have a Canon 16-35 lens. Thanks.
Though now that i double checked i'm assuming you are talking the canon 10-22mm fish-eye? If that's the case then that lens is made for a crop senor like the 650d and won't have the 1.6 times crop factor so it will be a true 10-22. Not a huge difference in focal length from the 8-15mm (13-24 cropped) but the quality of the lens is vastly superior on the 8-15mm, that and if you upgrade to a full frame the 10-22 won't work on the 5d line of canons, and an L-lens is always a worthy investment.
Hey man thx a lot for the video always great ones , I have little question 15mm fish eye is it wider than a regular diagonal wide angel also 15mm? Os it is a same wide but with fish eye effect?
went over to my local camera shop and got a chance to play around with this lens and wow its crazy good and the circle reminds me of a old school beastie boys video cant wait to pick it up. also the guy at the store said 8mm is more ment for video the for stills
Great review. I respect your views a lot more knowing your an keen Nikon shooter and still admitting the technological differences in lens. I have a canon 5D Mk2 & its AWESOME! good vid as usual! thanks
@d34dfl3sh I think you mean 16-35 or 17-40? And 8-15 is Fisheye. Meaning it is completely distorted while the other is just plain ultra wide with limited barrel distortion. And nice! I'm planning to get a 50mm L next month (hopefully I can save up enough money).
I'm currently looking at what ultra wide might add value to my kit, over the 24-105 on my 5D mark ii. I like the way Darth turns slowly into Doctor Evil.
I kinda like seeing all these new folks asking questions (: but Jared I know you said bokeh wise it won't matter. But light coming into the lens wise is the 2.8 better than a 4 for a fish eye? Or a f3.5? Say they were using a rebel or something and the low light isn't so good, would you still suggest the f/4 lens for them?
I tried this lens on my 5D3 today, i didn't really have any expectations about what to expect, but it was really fun to play with, and when I got back home and looked at the test shots in the mall, I was really impressed with the sharpness and overall look of the images, I would really like to have this lens in my bag even though it is allot of money for a specialty lens that I might not use to often, but I feel like I could get real creative with it, I didn't expect to want this lens, but I do
Hey Jared. Wanted to see some shots seeing before and after, where you can see the shot with the distortion removed, so its more like a panoramic photo, not a circle. Do you have any of those shots with this lens? I mainly shoot night/astronomy/city skyline type photos. So its a weigh up between this lens or the MUCH cheaper Canon 15mm F/2.8
For everyone who's probably going to ask: There is a MAJOR difference between the 14mm f/2.8L (II USM) and the 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye. First.. ONE IS NOT FISHEYE. What Jared was talking about is the _15mm_ f/2.8 Fisheye. The 15 f/2.8 fisheye is not more expensive, but with the 8-15, you get ZOOMABLE fisheye, and sharp Canon L glass. Do your research if you're confused. Now.. Great job Jared! I actually wish I got this lens when I had the chance!
o buy the way you forgot to bring up the new swc or sub wave lenth coating on the front and rear element the helps reduce finger prints and scratching and water marks. great review
I would have appreciated some shots between 10mm and 15mm on a full-frame. If it vignettes at everything below 15mm, not really sure why would someone want this lens over Canon 15mm f/2.8 FE that is already insanely sharp, cost half the price and is one full stop faster. We all love letter L, but come on. Maybe for people who own both full-frame and crop?
Really. I came looking for examples just under 15mm. He continually only showed "here it is at 8. Now here it is at 15, now here it is at 8 again"...haha. Great to review a zoom lens without covering the whole range
i feel like the 8mm is less of a gimmick when you consider it for crop sensor users. Sure on a full frame like the 5D mark II 8 mm will give you that circel which is incredibly unrealistic. Canon makes a 14mm f/2.8 L lens, but if you want to actually get that 14mm ultra wide realistically on a crop sensor... you need a 8mm range to get the same effect. Which this is where this lens can really come in handy for those not shooting with a full frame
Hey Jared just saying, this makes an amazing concert lens. Got to use my friends one for his bands concert, and it gave me some of my best photos for the night, for back stage stuff and shots from the pit
@jaredPolin hey any idea what it will look like on a crop sensor (1.6) camera. will it still make a circle at 8mm since the focal length would be more like 12mm?
quick question im a begginer film maker and im wondering why does this lense at 8mm have the barrel look and the the rokinon 8mm fisheye on a t3i doesnt because im a skateboard filmer and i dont wont a barrel look or maybe a very small one thanks
On a crop sensor body you will get about 16-35(10-22) and 13-24 (8-15). Personally when I go out and either film or shoot a skate video i prefer a wide angle to a fish eye, which is why I shoot with a 17-40mm L series, it keeps me a decent distance from the skate and my camera while still getting the subject in frame and not distorted by a fish eye. It's all about how you want the final picture or video to look like. Of the 2 i would say the 8-15mm L series, can't beat an L lens.
@PsykoOps When I first used it I couldn't believe how sharp it was. Only complaint about the Samyang lens is that it messes with my cameras auto exposure sometimes (over exposes), but I've learned to compensate for that.
@mitsubishidiamante a) It's f/2.8 ( as opposed to 8-15's f/4 b) It's JUST wide angle (not fisheye) And the obvious difference: One is just pure ultra wide angle, while the other is just a fisheye. Just because it's wide angle doesn't mean it's a fisheye. If you don't want the fisheye effect go for the 14 f/2.8.. It's GREAT for landscape especially if you want that extra depth of field. If you want the fun effect of distortion, the fisheye is there :)
Could someone point me to a cheaper FishEye that would work on my T3i? Not sure how many times I'll use it and can't see spending this much on a test run of a lens.
true, and I'm not saying it's a bad lens (I actually have it) but it's not very sharp, it's totally manual, there are chromatic aberrations everywhere, and it's a fixed focal length Although from a consumer point of view it's much more bang for your buck, I usually only use it for indoor shots but I've taken some of my favourite landscapes with it too
I'm just honestly not sure its worth the price given the limited use of fisheye, yes fisheyes are fun but the look can get very old.... it is a great lens though, Jered should check out the Canon 15mm Fisheye prime in comparison to it.... I think the Canon one is fairly well regarded and inexpensive
The 15mm f2.8 covers the whole FF sensor. You will not get the circular image. There are some lenses that only give you the circular image, that are 6mm or 8mm lenses. This lens, the 8-15, gives you both an all the steps in between. It's really king of the fisheye lenses. (and priced as such)
@@filmlocker6284 Awesome! BTW you know you can photoshop the circular fisheye effect right? "How To Create Y2K Fisheye Effect In Photoshop" is a good video on the topic.
Hey guys, I'm looking for a fisheye for me C100, I was wondering if anyone has used this lens with it? only reason I ask is because you say this lens is better with cameras that are not full frame.. help?
insane lens , insane .. but very pricey , its more than my actual camera cost , i have a 60d and thats the biggest con to me , i want this so badly , i'll probably wait till it goes down though , great review
If you think the lens is "very limited" at 8mm, how about put it on something like a 7d thats NOT full frame so you don't get the shitty circle effect?
@deadkennedys909 you could hand hold this lens to such low shutter speeds without issue that it wont really matter much.
@eaq2k3 2.8, i owned it but its not full frame.
Hehehe just watched this after picking this lens up second hand. Fro you’ve come a long way but this vid is mint.
@KennyBetterment yes i do, its actually really really good or i wouldnt be selling it.
he does this with every review and does a great job with the reviews much better then the reviews on your channel
Wow new lighting inside the FRO's room !!!! Fantastic
Watching this in 2020 covid-19 quarantined! Looking to get this lens for creative photography! Great for an 8 yrs ago vid!
Old School Fro! Still in the shop!

@PsykoOps the whole point is its a zoomable fisheye rather then the standard fixed focal
Though now that i double checked i'm assuming you are talking the canon 10-22mm fish-eye? Thanks for using a mic. I can actually hear what you're saying from my laptop and appreciate that so much.
@BookhouseBoy77 thankfully no.
I've had this lens for 6 months.. it's incredible :)
Great review as usual. I guess this is one of those "if you need one you know why" lenses because I can't think of any reason I would need it.
@JanErikEdvartsen hmmm maybe i will toss some onto the next go around. Sale coming tomorrow on all others wink wink.
@bwinn10 thanks, i will look into that, I didnt read anything about it but I will go look into it now.

@chimaera2695 its not a fisheye
This is the first vid I see by you, when i saw the intro i already knew your vids were gonna be good :DD

@gus305 ha today or this week but more like today.
Is it able to use 8mm with Aps c camera ? Why or why not ?
it will still have the crop factor, the 10-22 is made to give the same FOV as the 16-35mm lense
Thinking about getting this to go with my 5d mark iii
great vid jared! u deserve more viewers
quick question im a begginer film maker and im wondering why does this lense at 8mm have the barrel look and the the rokinon 8mm fisheye on a t3i doesnt because im a skateboard filmer and i dont wont a barrel look or maybe a very small one thanks
@JaredPolin I think it came out like a little less then a week ago because DigitalRev did a review.
hello fro, if were you used canon, would you buy one? :D
look at the 16-35 or the 17-40(I think lol), i'm a Nikon shooter but i've played around with the 16-35 setup on a 6D and the lens is pretty good.
yeh Nice lens but i can tell there is an narrow blu ring around the edge of the lens or the image what is that
On a crop sensor body you will get about 16-35(10-22) and 13-24 (8-15). @JaredPolin sorry its called Fluorine Lens Coating i think there new tele's the 300,400,500,600mm will have it to
what about the nikon 10.5mm f2.6? I have it and I love how sharp it is. have you tried it?
jared, why are your eyes moving like that in the end of the video?
@PsykoOps When I first used it I couldn't believe how sharp it was. Only complaint about the Samyang lens is that it messes with my cameras auto exposure sometimes (over exposes), but I've learned to compensate for that.
can you do a review of fisheye lenses for nikon? Like the 10.5mm nikkor or the 8-16mm sigma?
do you think you can get your hands on a rokinon fish eye for nikon i just bought one and i want a pros thought on it
I need a affordable fisheye lens for my canon 70d that has auto focus any suggestions
@mitsubishidiamante
a) It's f/2.8 ( as opposed to 8-15's f/4
b) It's JUST wide angle (not fisheye)
And the obvious difference: One is just pure ultra wide angle, while the other is just a fisheye. Just because it's wide angle doesn't mean it's a fisheye. The difference is full frame versus a crop frame camera. The Canon t3i is a crop sensor, whereas the 5D is full frame.
10-22mm or 8-15mm i film skateboarding please help, what should i buy?
@peachteao screen flow
Fantastic review man! Thanks for all the info! I'll definitely be saving up for this one. I'm convinced.
Could someone point me to a cheaper FishEye that would work on my T3i? Not sure how many times I'll use it and can't see spending this much on a test run of a lens.
@JaredPolin Ever used the old Ai nikon 8mm. They should update that...
It's a great lens, the only thing i don't like about it is when it goes circular, you need to take the lens hood off or you'll see it in the frame...
hey jared, what do you thinnk of the tokina 11mm-16mm F 2.8? in comparison to this lens.
that shop looks beast
what about Sigma 8-16 mm 3.5? Compare someday?
please do a review for skateboarding, FRO !
Just bought one. Looking forward to using it after this somewhat off the wall but fortunately, complimentary review. Many Thanks Mr Polin
Are you using a crop or a full frame?

Can the 15mm f2.8 on a 5D Mark IV get that circular black background or is that exclusive to the 8mm?
The 15mm f2.8 covers the whole FF sensor. You will not get the circular image. There are some lenses that only give you the circular image, that are 6mm or 8mm lenses. This lens, the 8-15, gives you both an all the steps in between. It's really king of the fisheye lenses. (and priced as such)

Aren't you supposed to zoom in a little so that it barely shows the black border
what do you think
How would you protect the front element of the fisheye?
Keep the hood and or cap on it.

I'm looking for a fisheye for me C100, I was wondering if anyone has used this lens with it? only reason I ask is because you say this lens is better with cameras that are not full frame..
help?
@HenrytheBrit The Sigma is no fisheye lens and the 10.5mm is a DX only lens, so I doubt he'll do it.
FroVader sounds like Homer Simpson doing an impersonation of Darth Vader. Good Video.
insane lens , insane .. but very pricey , its more than my actual camera cost , i have a 60d and thats the biggest con to me , i want this so badly , i'll probably wait till it goes down though , great review
what screen recording software do you use?
this is a great portrait lens
@Steezmite22 Crop it!, since the lens is so sharp
do you ship to argentina? how much? thanks jared
@d34dfl3sh But they're completely different. One is fisheye the other is just plain wide angle.
How the heck did your hair fit?
i dont know, but my camera is canon 650d?
can you try it on canon 7D plz
jared why always olnly talkin about the 16mm ther is a 10.5mm fisheye why dont you use this if you need a new nikon fisheye
