    The sweet spot is the 2004-2006 4.8is!! It has the newer engine and transmission but still has the lighter weight of the first-gen design. Also, the factory specs are 360 hp 360 lbs-ft so a slight upgrade.

    I own the E53 4.4i and I love mine.. I love how it feels going up or down the Clyde Mt (Fairly steep set of mountains that lead to Batemans Bay NSW) and yes I know its a problematic vehicle but mine hasn't given me much problems so far (Touch Wood) .. I am planning on doing a muffler delete or putting a set of shutoff pipes later on.
    To this I have driven that version of the X5 and find it a bit spongey for my tastes.. So my answer would be to keep your 4.6is for a couple of more years until the newer versions become slightly more affordable.

    Before you ditch the 4.6is check the production number to see if it will be a valuable investment worth holding on to...they are becoming rare and valuations are on the rise as they become harder to get, not to mention they are the most collectable of the e53 range...in saying that, the feature car would be a perfect tow vehicle, but wasting your money if you performance enhance. There's just too many around to justify the investment.

    I had an F15 50i, I actually got the 2 front resonators removed and left the rear muffler, that gave it a great note, not as beasty as this.

    I have heard to stay away from all V8's for the early 2000 to current, due to valve seal, timing chain guides, possibly rod bearings and over heating. You guys never mention those issues or see to have any concerns about them either? Just curious, maybe some youtubers have got it wrong.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 роки тому +5

      So generally the M series engines have issues with timing chain guides. We currently have 3 of those here (m62b44, m62b44tu and m62b46tu) none of which have shown any signs of problems (yet). The n series of V8s have valve stem sealing issues. Absolutely nightmare of a job to do on a v8. I would expect to see some smoke coming out of the exhaust around this milage (200,000ks) on most N series engines. Personally a little bit of smoke after you have been idling is no biggie. But it can get bad, using a decent oil on them works wonders. Not too thin. As for rod bearings that seems to be the S series of engines which suffer from that. We currently have a S62 and S85 here and rod bearings are a concern, we have done the s62 and plan to do the S85 soon. however its not a crazy job. DIY should get them done under the $1000 mark.
      I honestly feel like a lot of common problems people make a big deal about on the BMW engines are non issues. People hype the problems up to either scare people and charge a lot to fix them or because they simply don't understand what they're talking about.

    It is a question of enthusiasm. In my eyes the 4.6is has more spirit and in general I dislike all bmw engines that came after 2003 on the market...I think the mainflaw of the 4.6 is the timing chain and gearbox. The 4.8is has better parts on that point of view,but got a big problem with the waterlining in the middle of the engine and the valvetronic can be a really expensive thing when it damages the valvecam. On the other hand the design of the e53 is like an e46 with an e39 in big and I love it. I'd not sell the 4.6is for the much more ugly e70. If it is about the gearbox, there are options on the market with a zf8hp70 from the 550ixdrive....which should mate to the m62 bellhouse very well. Gearboxcontroller via htg gcu...the only real hard question for me would be an e53 4.6is vs an e53 4.8is. That my point of view and honest opinion.

    The N62 V8 is a much better designed engine then the M62 V8 because the M62 had problems with the water cooled alternator and the U shaped timing chain guide that ends up breaking overtime. As for the N62 V8 engines a normal alternator and the timing chain guides much different designed. The only biggest common problems you had to deal with on N62 V8s are one the coolant transfer pipe, two the valve stem seals along with the 2 crank case vent valves, and three the alternator oil bracket. If these engines maintained properly which is keeping clean oil and coolant in them religiously I have seen them get almost 300,000 miles. This had to be the best V8 engine BMW ever made unlike the S62 V8 engines that had seriously weak rod bearings in them.

    • @stefantorozov7508
      @stefantorozov7508 11 місяців тому

      You could not be more wrong. The M62 engine is way better designed and way more robust. The timing issue on the M62 I would not call it a real issue because you can not expect for a plastic guide to last 20+years, it is a service item after all. Most of the M62 powered cars are 20 years+ old and even some of them are still running the original chain and guides. The water cooled alternator is again a very robust which is just harder to service and still last 15+years on most cars. As for the N62 you have again timing chain issues, valve tronic issues both with the solenoids and the eccentric shafts, oil consumption due to bad valve seals, gaskets prone to leak and finally prematurely worn out conrod bearings and main bearings which are seen again on many cars, something which is pretty much unheard on the M62. In addition the cars with the N series engines are 10+ years newer and suffer from those issues and are widely spread. The m62 engine is also an V8 engine which is widely swapped in all kind of BMWs and other cars because is relatively easy to work on and reliable something which can not be said about the N series. And last, the weak rod bearings which you mention are on the S65 and S85 the V10 m5 and V8 m3 which engines are based on the N series so stop spreading false information. Yes the S62 again also needed to rod bearings replaced but again way less common and very few cars got spun bearings compared to the newer M5 and M3 which are know for failing rods bearings before even 100k km on some cars, compared to many old e39 M5s with 200k kms and more with the original bearings.

      @@luhgeeky1266 I’ve had a 2009 e70 4.8i for almost four years… had the valve stem seal issue (smoke after idle) which caused a good amount of oil consumption but never affected performance or reliability.
      I had the valve stem seals replaced fairly inexpensively from someone who does a lot of them and know what they are doing.
      After that oil consumption decreased dramatically and reliability has been great the entire time I’ve owned it.
      Put over 6000 miles in one week driving coast to coast and back with absolutely zero issues.
      Only thing is they eat up tires!

      We it never spun the wheels at all and sometimes find the shifts on the zf6 flare a bit more when TC is fully off. Probably didnt make any difference being in DTC either tbh. You aint gonna spin up these huge tyres at this power level.

    E53 4.8is....

    • @DaveTony206
      @DaveTony206 3 роки тому +1

      The 4.6is was a pioneer for the sporty SUV’s we see today, and the Titanium Silver 4.6is in my care has a prime parking spot in the stable... However, I drive a 4.8is almost daily and do believe it’s a significant improvement over the 4.6is. The first subtle change is the steering wheel . The 4.8is wheel is much chunkier than the thin-rimmed 4.6is wheel. Some 4.8is wheels are also heated, which is nice. The other notable changes are the N62 engine, the 4-corner air suspension, the 6-speed transmission, X-Drive AWD, and the panoramic roof. The 4.8is also has larger diameter exhaust pipes from the headers back, making it sound a bit deeper in tone than the 4.6is. With all that said, I’ll admit, the E70 is likely the easier platform to live with today for most people. The E53 4.8is and the E70 4.8i are more similar than many realize, but I much prefer the E53 design language, and the E53 was offered in Imola Red, so yeah... Can go wrong with either. As always, thanks for the awesome videos guys! 🍻
