Today I will show you how to make your own driftwood! Please see below for item details and written instructions.
    Items Required:
    - Inflatable pool (I purchased mine at Canadian Tire) OR bucket - I could not find a bucket big enough to hold a few of my larger pieces of driftwood so I used an inflatable pool
    - Bleach
    - Fine sand paper (I purchased mine at Home Depot)
I would recommend trying to find branches that have little to no bark left on them. I took a walk through a few parks in the area and found some branches that were suitable.
I found a few longer sticks that I broke into 2 or 3 pieces so that I could use them for smaller wall hangings. Let’s get started!
    Step 1 - Clean
Set up your inflatable pool or bucket. Add some dish soap to the water. You don’t have to add an exact amount - just enough so that some bubbles start to form in the water. The dish soap will help to take off any extra bark and oils/residue on the outside and in the cracks of the sticks.
Use something heavy to hold the sticks underwater (I’m using a cooler). Leave the sticks in the soapy water for 1-2 days.
    Step 2 - Bleach
Refill your pool/bucket with new water and add bleach for a deeper cleanse. The bleach will help to lighten the colour of the sticks to make them look exactly like driftwood taken right off the beach! I added 2 cups of bleach.
Leave the sticks in the bleach solution for 2-3 days.
Let your sticks dry in the sun for 4-5 days. The sun will try the sticks and bleach the colour further.
    Step 3 - Sand
Last step - sand down your sticks so that they are smooth to the touch. I also like to sand down the ends so that the corners are rounded to make them look exactly like driftwood!
I’ll show you the difference between the 3 pieces I sanded vs. the 3 pieces I didn’t. The pieces I sanded are much smoother to the touch and the edges are rounded. The 3 pieces I didn’t sand are rough and the edges are sharp.
Thanks so much for watching! I love to see your work so please feel free to tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you’ve used one of my tutorials. Thank you for this tutorial! I’m landlocked so finding driftwood is a no go but this process worked great. Instead of a pool I found a plastic planter on Amazon to use (I was only doing one stick) and it worked great with less space.

Thank you! Your instructions saved me a lot of trouble & expense trying to make a curtain valance rod for our Mermaid Stained Glass window in our beach home. Long driftwood pieces are very hard to find along the Galveston TX beach because of the wave action. Most of the driftwood in is pieces 3-6 inches long & encrusted with sand, seaweed & "mystery" substances.

Great job. I've been bleaching some lake driftwood with good and not so good results. My colorful, resinous pieces lost some of their beauty color. Some color came back after pressure washing with an electric washer. Actually, I think I'm okay with just the pressure washing. This makes things a lot easier.

Thanks for the tutorial. My driftwood will be for my fish tanks but getting the bark off is the hardest part for me. Using fruit trees and the bark is more attached than say cottonwood which can be stripped by hand. Also you have a great narrative voice, very clear and easy to understand. :)

I don't want to pour bleach water onto the grass in my yard because it may kill the grass - plus, I have a cat who may drink the water, and, I wouldn't want her to get bleach poisoning or any kind of poisoning from the soapy water! Hope there are alternatives. 😀

This is one of the most useful video ever! (Also, your dog cracked me up). Thank you for the writing instructions as well but at step 2 I understood to let them dry forty five days days (instead of four to five :D). Does it have to be bleach, though? Bleach is super ultra bad for the environment. Could vinegar look maybe? Or, using the opposite, baking soda? (I use baking soda when I do my laundry to keep the white white - well, to keep the colors whatever they are).

@@LotsofKnotsCanada Another reason why I can't use this technique I just remember last night (which is half why I hardly have any bleach at home) is that I have 2 cats at home. We all know how cats react to bleach ; for those who don't, it makes them go crazy. Like a high junkie, rolling around in it like they're having a seizure, if they could drink it they would. And that's the heart of the issue because you're leaving your bleach bath out for days, no way you can keep it under constant surveillance that long (even with a helping dog ;) ). I really hope you didn't poisoned your neighbours' cats...
