The real hero for me in that scrum at the end of the game was Mark Giordano. 40 years old, just back from LTR, and he comes up swinging against three guys at once to defend his teammate. The heart on that man is the size of a boulder.
Went from furiously cheering for Gio to screaming at hin when I saw him down on the ice without a helmet - mad lad just came back from a nasty concussion and he goes in swinging against guys half his age. Too bad we can't have him and Spezza in a scrum together

Ilya Samsonov is absolutely the biggest turn around for the Leafs this season, possibly in the entire NHL. Dude was this close to ending up in the Florida Complex League catching Alek Manoah's side sessions
Based on how Sammy was playing then, he would not have been able to catch any of Manoah's pitches. Literally would not be able to make the catches.

The crowd was louder in Buffalo than they are at home. The blue collar leaf fans can actually afford a ticket in Buffalo.
..and even then they up the price of tickets in Buffalo, and Detroit, and Arizona. It's quite pathetic revenue is in the billions and yet they still do this.

We all remembered what happened in December against the same Buffalo team, same goalie for the Leafs (Sammy) different for Buffalo (Levi instead of UPL) and 9-3 Sabres, months later… Sammy vs UPL and 3-0 Leafs.
Hearing the fans chant Sammy Sammy at an away game is one of the reasons it is so great being a Leaf fan. Then again being a life long Leaf [I'm in my mid 60s] it sucks at the same time...lol
Samsonov began the season pretty bad, and it only got worse from there. He disintegrated. He crashed to a level where he literally couldn't play hockey. The dude had to clear waivers mere months ago. UNREAL comeback. Absolute hero.
How about a hand for Connor Timmins, if he does nothing else in his nhl career, he just became the answer to who was the only player to assist Matthew's 60th goal the second time around, also Matthew's 60th the first time was the 3rd goal in a 3-0 win over a divisional opponent.
The Leafs got destroyed back in December 9-3, now the Leafs got revenge by shutting out the Sabres. Pure revenge
And still got destroyed if not Sammy.

I was at this game. Leafs fans outnumbered Sabres fans at least 4 to 1. Samsonov got a standing ovation from the crowd remaining after the game was over. Tons of Go Leafs Go, MVP, and Sammy chants from those in attendance. The best part of the game was when the Sabres mascot was beating on his drum only to get Go Leafs Go chants. I watched him throw the drumstick and his hands up in frustration. Hilarious.
I noticed that somehow Matthews was presented with the wrestling belt in the room after the game. Matthews I believed turned to Samsonov and although unsure what was said he seemed very apologetic
To be fair this season Samsonov tried to give Matthews the belt and Matthews gave it straight back to him. Very rare that someone gets the belt back to back, not sure of it ever happening before. That's how big Sammy's turn around has been this season.
Auston's leadership has really grown. If Tavares is ever to depart from the team, Matthews should be next in line for the C. Either him or Mo, Rielly is a great leader as well
@@Outta-hz1ej this season he's been going to acknowledge his tender after scoring. There's a big inclusiveness with the team this year. They play for each other more than I've seen before.
Reilly has very good leadership skills but he terrible defensively. Tavares skills and consistency are deteriorating rapidly. He can be replaced with (1) $4 million and (2) $3 million player
The Best part of that game was how the Leafs didn’t back down. At this point in the season its how they play, not the score

Last night, fathers loved Sammy, mothers loved Sammy, brothers loved Sammy, sisters loved Sammy, grandfathers loved Sammy, grandmothers loved Sammy, nephews loved Sammy, nieces loved Sammy, but Cozens HATED him.
A lot of the skaters went out of their way to give the game to the Sabres, but Sammy said, "Not tonight"

Sammy should have gotten the belt. Hitting 60 is a great accomplishment but Sammy is the reason that the Leafs won. The belt is for the MVP of the game, not the season.
The thing is, Sammy can get another elite performance in this season still, another shutout. But you can only get 60 goals once in the whole season, so that's why.

Mik being a canucks player means so much to me personally. I fell in love with the sdpn during the 2020 mayhem and watched a lot of your old shows for months and months. Mikheyev quickly became my favourite player after hearing your story about his injury, and when he entered free agency I was begging for him to come to my Canucks.

What a great hockey game, there was suspense with the close game. A leafs record in the making, Sammy getting the shutout. And to top it off a there was hockey game that broke out of a fight at the end

Do you wanna hear a fun stat? The last time Matthews hit 60, it was a 3rd period goal to make it 3-0 against Detroit, and the leafs would win 3-0. And the same thing just happened against the Sabres. 🤔

Just a thought yes 9-3 was bad but missing the playoffs for 13 seasons in a row is worse. And speaking of blowouts TB got just pasted by Florida 9-2 at home in Tampa a while ago, even worse than a 9-3 loss on the road but if I were Florida they might end up playing Tampa in the playoffs 2nd round possibly and they have never beaten TB in a playoff series. TB is a dangerous team as an underdog. As for the Leafs a very tough assignment for their first round, let’s hope….

This arena has had so many names, usually bank-related. Marine Midland, HSBC....the old building was the Aud, and like Boston Garden felt small.

I miss when Key Bank Center was the First Niagara Center, aka the F'N C. Wild how that arena went up when I was a kid and has had three names since then.

Lots of sabre chances thru 1st n 2nd looked...lazy when it came to the shot. Then sampsonov became dominic hasek for the 3rd!
It’s crazy because in a seven game series with buffalo the leafs could either win that series 4-2 or lose 3-4.

I was at this game and it felt like 70 percent of the building (at least) was leafs fans. Absolutely electric. Had a family of sabres fans in front of me who were very nice, kinda felt a little bad about the whole situation for them

Happy Easter to The Glynn Clan🐣 - I think the contretemp at the end was mostly the Sabres being diaper babies - and the Leafs exercising their NEW ATTITUDE - if you lose points in your pool for penalties - that SUX! 🙏💛 - BTW - "The Buffalo Memorial Auditorium" was a nicer name than all that Corporate BS.
Amazing! The Leafs win and gain ground on....absolutely NOBODY! Boston won, Florida won, the NY Rangers won, and Carolina Won...all the teams the Leafs are chasing. Additionally the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team CHASING the Leafs won. In fact every team except Boston won by 3 goals, so they really didn't even gain any tie breaker deciders either! Similarly, the fringe teams are barely holding a spot or just outside of the playoff hunt, all seemed to lose. Washington, Pitt, & Detroit each managed to pick up a point losing in OT or a shootout, but the Islanders, Philly, Buffalo, Montreal, & New Jersey all lost in regulation. Coming into the season, we all knew that Florida, Toronto, Boston and Tampa would all be the LIKELY playoff teams from the division, and that really isn't in question at this point. The thing we didn't know would be in what order they would finish, and that's still up in the air. In the Metro, The Rangers & Carolina were locks, and NJ seemingly had a spot wrapped up, and we'd LIKELY see the Caps, Isles and Pitt fighting for the 4 spot, but as it is, Philly has passed all of them & has a comfy lead. Gonna be an interesting stretch run for teh metro, but in our division, just jockeying for a shot at home ice.

That was Matthew's best goal. He got in front of the crease and will the puck in. I hope he plays like this in the post season. Bobby McMann played lights out. That guy is only going to get better.
