  • What’s that, analogue you say? Analogue??! Surely in this world of digital test instruments there’s simply no value to something with a pointy pointer that points to printed pictures of poxy numbers?! Well, maybe… but surely all those pesky Australians can’t be wrong?!
    Notes:
At 5:51 I wibble on about aligning the needle through the centre of the infinity marks on the display, then after much twiddling I leave it cock-off. That’s just because the camera was in the way and I was looking at it from the side, but it goes to show how an adjustment of this sort needs to be made when facing it squarely on.
It’s also of note that I say the MFT1552 shows an electronic ‘analogue’ display ranging in voltage from 0 to 600, the latter number indicating full-scale deflection, yet the legend printed to the left of the Megger’s LCD shows no more than 500V should be applied… so that’s a bit weird and serves to make me look quite the fool.
I should also state that Megger, and the 15 or 17 series of testers, aren’t the only brand or models of digital instruments that show an analogue representation on their LCD displays. My TIS MFT Pro has such on IR, in a very basic way, and that cute Robin KTS1625 has a digitally represented scale too. Other machines have similar no doubt.
Oh, I know there's been a glut of new videos spouted out here over the past week which is most out of character. Rest assured, the next one may be weeks away!

The quality of the content is far higher than the sub count might show. Stick that in your algorithm and choke on it tubers viewers. Thing is Dave, you're doing things no one else does and that's massively appreciated. I, we and anyone who arrives at this channel will find it hard to not like and ironically subscribe to this masterclass of brilliance mixed up with the occasional foul mouthed rant. That's a great new toy you have, now let's see it out in the field. Also, I'm loving the new outside broadcasting studio 👌🏻.

I was just about to do a CPD on earth rods when the notification of your latest installment lead me away, as it is always great to see a new one of your vids. I was also going to include the comment of "you put your left arm in, your left arm out" but seeing as Nige got shot down I will get my coat! You're like one of those fellas who goes to old car meets, regarding your testers aren't you, momories of halcion days? Not that there is anything wrong with that. I do wonder how your Shelf of Sh1T is coping under the strain these days though. In regards to UA-cam, I have to say I applaud you for not asking us every few minutes to "smash the Like button", "share with your friends" and "subscribe so you don't miss anything" nor bombarding us with ads every few minutes, you are a hero for that let alone the great content.

I'm glad you've featured a Hioki. I've been looking at their solar PV tester to go alongside my Seaward. It's the only one in the market that I'm aware of which can measure whilst an array is generating so you don't have to disconnect the cables.
In some scenarios and particularly with some inverters that would make a huge difference to testing arrays that are already in service.
It's also a lot smaller and lighter than the Seaward and comes in that handy looking box thing with the cables.
I particularly like the lock on test switch. It's just a shame it doesn't also do continuity testing.

    Great stuff.
I'm after an IR tester that has a good low range for use on testing whether bonding or supplementary bonding is needed
If I could find one that had the whole scale from 0 - 1Mega Ohm I would be very happy, this model is getting very close to what I want
I mean my Megger on IR goes as low as 0.2Meg at 500v, why can't there be an IR tester that goes from 0 - 0.2 Meg so we can fill in the missing spaces that the Mega won't do.
A meter that is sensitive to low values of insulation resistance and is still capable of operating at 500V to obtain those readings.
Great video and thanks very much for posting.

I've just noticed from the other David's video that you linked to, it has stubby probes to go on the end of the banana leads. Does anyone know of anywhere else to get those shorter-than-usual probes? I quite like the look of them, as the strain relief hanging out the end of a standard set of probes often gets to be cumbersome.

    • @dsesuk

    • @Pieman93
      @Pieman93 2 роки тому

Sorry, I was referring to the probe end, not the meter end - the removable probes on this unit look to be only about 75mm long, and then the straight plug and strain relief on the lead form part of the handle. As opposed to the usual removable probes that are about 150mm long, and end up way too long when the plug and strain relief on the lead hangs out another 75mm or so, it just ends up being too unwieldy

I like that tester . I saw one on Amazon last year , about £ 60 give or take a tenner I was very tempted . But I already have a Viki VC60B+ digital continuity/ insulation resistance tester branded as Samyo I use it as a basic pat tester just playing around with really. As for the multimeter like that as well
I still have the little Robin multimeter my brother gave me when I first started college it about the same size as a 20 cigarette packet And is still in good condition and working order. Thank you for this video please do more , oh did you yet the Robin amprobe fixed? I do hope so . I will have to send you a picture of my testers see what you might think .

Thanks Sean, thought you might like it. Sadly, I've not done anything with the Robin yet, other than opening it up myself to take a peek inside. I checked it recently though and it seemed to be giving sensible numbers on loop, so it may be an intermittent fault with that. I was talking to someone who worked at a calibration repair company who was interested in looking at it, but looks like that hit a dead-end sadly.

Great video as usual! A little funny story about analogue testers....
My apprentice was getting a bit too cocky with his new shiny Megger MFT and how all of my test equipment (Metrel and Kewtech) was old and dusty.
Now I happened to be going to an underground cable fault so I picked up my very rarely used dear old Megger Bridge BR7. It's a combined wind up IR tester and wheatstone bridge and can do Murray/Varley loop tests to help locate underground cable faults. When he saw it he had a right laugh and made a comment that this heap of junk was a waste of space on the van.
First job of day, we needed to test six circuits, so for fun I said we'd both do it, him on his overpriced shiny machine of plenty, and me on my ancient old gramophone simulator. For 5 of them my results were consistently 0.01ohm different to his, much to his disbelief. He got to circuit 6 first and it had almost zero IR. I left him breaking it down, then he came over all sheepish - my batteries are flat. So I passed him the BR7 and said "get winding!". He had to admit that a battery free tester had it's uses.
Then we got to the job with an underground SWA run with a fault somewhere. I took great pleasure in saying that this old battery-free heap of junk will now do something his box of tricks couldn't, and demonstrated a Murray test, got a fault distance, paced it out and there was a newish looking washing line post within 30cm. Bingo. He couldn't believe his eyes.
By the end of the day he' was looking for one like it on ebay!
So nowt wrong with analogue, if only to help adjust the attitude of the little upstart with the 1752!

Yeah, it sucks up a pretty penny for what it offers. I can't see many on these shores plumping for it outside of some niche applications.

Says the man that says 'New' the American way. I wonder where in the UK this is common and not? I have never figured it out, and when I point it out to friends who do this they seems to start alternating between Noo and Nyoo with paranoia.
