With a straight razor you don't have to worry about spending $20 on new razors or worrying about getting hair stuck in the blades. However with all of these positives there is one negative, you may happen to cut your face apart.
I shave first pass with the grain, second pass against the grain, and if need be a third clean up pass in whichever needs clean up. I use a 1968 Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor (an all brass razor. Many I know also have the pre 1961 Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable) with various of blades but Gillette has a variety of DE blades such as their "7 O' Clock" and "Silver Blue" brand of blades. I use a double edge razor (safety razor) because the truth is you only need one good blade to cut your face...not 3, 5, 7, whatever and double edge blades are only around 0.20 cents a blade that can give you two to four shaves per blade.
I always like to shave against the grain. I like my face to be ultimately smooth and shaving against the grain is the only way to achieve the ultimate smooth face. My adoptive brother works at an oil refinery and he has to shave against the grain. Otherwise, his oxygen breathing apparatus won't seal properly.
+WitcherRage Yes this video does not answer the question in its own title because they want to sell their 50 blade cartridge plastic razor. Their answer basically was "With THIS razor of ours that has 10 million blades, you CAN shave against the gain." Real nice. How does this have so many likes?
Ravikant Rai I was taught to use a safety one blade on the face. And I taught myself to use the 5 blade fusion cartidges for my body. Yeah I agree completely one blade safety razor for the face only, cartidges or numerous blades destroy your face.
Thanks for the sharing the tip about the neck side. I always had trouble at the neck side, because it's quite hard to get a complete shave there; do one mis-step and your sure to always get pimples there.
it's definitely cleaner but going with the grain still looks fine even though it might not feel as right I get too many hairs barely trapped under the skin and a few ingrown going with the grain I don't get much of that
Some people tend to not shave against the grain since their faces may not handle shaving against the direction the hair grows. It may not work for them as it causes irritation, pulling and tugging or sometimes ingrown hairs for them. Rather they go across the grain which is across the direction the hair grows.
This is perfect. In most video I see they don't teach you which direction is against or with the grain. THey just tell you to shave along or opposite the growth of your beard, I hated them so much
I shave after my evening hot shower and always shave against the grain with a single-edge razor. Gutsy, yes, but after the learning curve I find that nothing shaves closer. The shave is so close you don't feel any stubble at all.
Hi thanks for sharing this video... I have a doubt, should I shave my leg hair..? I have much hair on Leg. If I shave will it harmful for skin.? or is it better to use trimmer.? Please let me know....
A trimmer is often recommended to be used for longer hair, and no, shaving wont be harmful if you do it correctly: to shave: -Use the trimmer and remove the hair -Wet the skin with warm water to soften the skin -(if you want to shave the leg hair entirely) Apply some shaving cream or shaving gel then start shaving -After you can apply some after-shaving lotion if you want, it will moisturize the skin while avoiding irritation (If you're using the razor, clean it after every few swipes with water)
I am 20 years old and I shave with safety razor using coconut oil and shaving soap. I don't have a full beard growth yet, so it is still developing. It's thin and uneven, and with many bald spots. This is normally how my shaving routine is: 1. I have my shaving soap and shaving brush in a cup and filling it up with hot water as possible. 2. Hydrating my face with warm water (or shave after shower). 3. Putting coconut oil on face where my beard grows. 4. Removing water from the cup and making a nice foam with my brush. Paint the foam on my face for 2-3 mins. 5. Rinsing my razor in warm water and then I start shaving my first pass with the grain. This goes very well and is very comfortable. I have a light and nice pressure. 6. Rinsing my face and applying foam on my face again for second pass - this time across the grain. This is more aggressive on my face, and if I am not careful I might as well get few small cuts. 7. On the third pass I go against the grain. This is very aggressive on my face and I always want my face to be smooth as possible, but I don't like shaving that direction at all. Sometimes shaving that direction goes well, but I most of the time get redness, irritated skin and cuts. Especially my chin and neck. This is annoying. Sorry for the long comment, but I felt I had to type down in details how I'm shaving. Because how can I stop getting cuts and redness? Should I stop shaving against the grain? I think I always push harder and over shave my face on the third pass, because I want to get my skin smooth as possible. I got to be more careful? Any techniques I could consider trying?

I recommend you shave in the shower. It's cleaner and saves time. Don't look in a mirror when you shave. You're going to want to get to know your face without looking at it.
No joke. I have a very coarse beard and a lot of facial hair. By far, the best shave I get is just using liquid Softsoap. Wet face with hot water, apply 3 pumps worth of Softsoap, lather, and shave with one of those 2 bladed Gillette Sensor2 Plus Pivot razors. Quick, no fuss, cheap, and close with rarely any nicks.
A thick lather isn't necessary. I just scrub my face lightly with my hands to get a little lather, and shave away. It seems to work great even if I don't bother to hardly lather it at all. It ain't the lather that does the job, it's the liquid soap layer. Try it.
is it bad if i shave it againts the growth direction? This is the question I asked youtube and this video showed up, but it didnt answer my question :(
While shaving with the grain can help reduce irritation, shaving against the grain can actually help you get a closer shave as well. You can find more information on this topic here: gillette.com/en-us/shaving-tips/how-to-shave/against-the-grain Happy shaving.
Umed Annaniaz yup that I do. so far the Braun Series 7 is the best for me. I bought a Philips 9000 series a few months back, it isn't bad but it takes some getting used to. Shaves closer than the braun, that being side it's best used with shaving gel.
I don't know why they didn't include this but it depends mostly on your genetics. If you had a lot of acne in your teenage years or you have curly or even "black" facial hair you really shouldn't go against the grain. If you fall into there categories the best way to get a close shave is to shave with the grain and then across the grain.
If it does then you are doing it wrong. When shaving against the grain NEVER ever put weight on the razor. Also afterwards splash lots of really cold water on your face. This will quickly contract your pores and thus align your facial hairs so that you don't get ingrown hairs. And apply after shave to disinfect any micro cuts you get.
