QDC, Maestro, Welcome Back. Sheperd Paine and Francois Verlinden would be very proud of you. What you do today, with your modeling skills and approach, is what they always have, even before "marketing" hit the model kits world. You bake your cake from scratch, not from a Betty Crocker's box. Love your "HOW TO MAKE WATER EXPLOSIONS" method: creative and convincing. Looks great. Well done, Maestro! Can't hardly wait to see the final product. Thanks for sharing . Lou
+qdc748a Thanks, Maestro. And I love your work. It goes beyond building kits: you give us some history on the model you are building, you take us to field trips, you thank your subscribers and you even remembered veterans by publishing a video "A SPECIAL VETERANS DAY MESSAGE". This is awesome! I come from a military family so thank you very much, Maestro. You kick ass. Lou
Just watched some of you´re old videos while painting some 1:35 soviet miniart figures. And then i see you uploaded this! really nice work with the explosions :) and i like the calm music in the last part of the video, works great with the chaos from the explosions ;) keep up the great work!
+Jennifer Machula Yes, it will. Most newer kits formulate their tracks to use ordinary liquid cement to glue them together so read the instructions before you glue :)
Hi Collin ..... super water explosion dio tip ... ! they look realistic .... they can work for terrain too with a little tweaking .... Thank You For Sharing ....
You inspired me to go out and buy a model car because you really got interested in model kits but idk if the level was too high or because I'd never built a kit before but it was really hard like some pieces snapped, gluing was a nightmare, and over all the instructions aren't enough to help me build the car. I'd really like to be able to build tanks like you but this model car killed my moral): you should make a video giving us the basics and walk us through the model world like where to start and what not. Models are so cool and you're so cool QDC you're so good at this teach me how to be like you man):
Just for accuracy, that is not silicone caulking: it is acrylic. The product QDC is using is water cleanup, while silicone caulking is cleanable with mineral spirits. Makes a big difference if you make a mistake!
Hey Qdc I have so questions to ask you 1 could you build a church hill I am building one with lots of aftermarket accessories 2 you should do something like that were you take a model kit and load it out with tons of after markets accessories
Enjoyed that qdc. I guess you could also use acrylic gel medium instead of calking. Calking though is denser though, so it would be easier to mould than gel medium. You'd have to do several coats of gel medium and it dries clear. I use gel medium to create water for my ships. I might experiment with gel medium and get back to you. Great work. W
Thanks for the explanation on how to do explosion's in water - I learnt something so I've subscribed to your channel. Have you done one where you do explosion's in other materials such as sand or a rock face - or even snow ? Would snow be similar to water or would it be different ??? Thanks.
HI, Maestro. I don't have to wait 'till OPERATION OVERLORD DIORAMA PART 9 comes out to say hello. Hope you're well, things going good and OODPT9 (Gee... sounds like a code from a James Bond movie) is progressing nicely. All my best. Take care. Your friend from Beantown, Lou
The explosion really look convincing! The simpler an idea, the better the result. I really enjoy watching your vids so I liked and subscribed! Greetings from Germany.
+Al Carr Thanks. It goes to prove that you don't have to spend lots of money to make a convincing model. I sometimes think that this hobby is too commercialized.
+qdc748a yeah it is, and it's up to modelers to use our best tool...inventiveness, like you´ve clearly showed us. On the other hand the modeling industry has to sell to survive, or many companies may go awol.....keep 'em rolling.....
Hello, I am confused. In your videos you say you use "Artist oil paint mixed with diluted mineral spirit for a wash". Where can I get this? Is a diluted mineral spirit the same as white spirit? Also, where do I get the artist oil paint? I search online and receive hundreds of different colors for it. 2. You say you used previously in the building of your Tiger from Zvesda, a "buff color mixed with white" for dust effect. Can you elaborate on what buff color? As the same before, I search and find hundreds of buff colors. Also, in the building of your Panzer 2 Ausf F, you used light grey for a dust effect. Which do you prefer? 3. In other videos, you have used a black for your first coat to give "shadows", but then in other videos you have used a black primer. Does it matter if I use a regular black paint as the first coat, or does it need to be a black primer? Thanks for the help QDC. I am wanting to build now a SDKFZ 222 and trying to assemble the paints before I buy it. Do you use enamel paints also? I am basically copying your painting routines since I have no clue on how to do it my own, lol. I built a panzer 2 and it turned out alright with painting, but I used a super light sand paint instead of DAK color so it doesn't look that right. But for my first model it's alright. I used black as my first coat, then the main coat, then I sprayed it with light grey for dust effect. Hope you respond, thanks for the help.
Mineral spirits and white spirits are the same thing, Oil paints can be bought in any craft shop, even easons if you are in the uk, just make sure you get "oil based oil paints" rather than "acrylic based oil paint" although the acrylic based is better for the painters, it's not for the modeller, In addition, the shade of tan doesn't really matter, although they are all slightly different it's the same colour at the end of the day, as long as it is buff (a light tan colour) Hopes this helps! Christopher
Sorry I forgot to comment on priming, although it isn't a must, cleaning the final model and then giving it a coat of primer can be a real bonus, as it will make painting easier, additionally when it's all painted and dried adding a coat of matt varnish will help the model resist any scratches or chips if it's being handled and gives a really nice finish Personally I have a lot of colours, if I need anything in preticular I'll buy it at the same time as the kit for the sake of connivence, and additionally it's ok to mix your own, this is especially apparent if you ever build a model ship, although nearly all warships have a red hull, the shades vary between navies and such so mixing your own colour is a must, and if things go wrong you can let it dry and paint over it without any major problems :) Happy modelling Christopher
+Airbornerock Hey Airborne. T3RRa_Bite_ summed it up. Just remember that Buff will have all shades of Tan. In Fact all Paints when Mixed will Vary shades between the Paint lots. It will be close to the color mix but all paint lots will vary by Shade. This happens cause of Weather, How fine the Paint pigment is ground, How much carrier is put into the paint pigment. So if you are looking for a particular Buff color there are many. Its also good to Vary the colors cause you put 2 uniformed Soldiers side by side you will Notice the color difference of the 2 solders. One might have a Newer uniform from the other. Their Web gear will have a different shade from the other. Their Helmet will even have differences. So its good to Vary each soldier in your Dio. I hope that this has giving you a better idea on how to paint. I have been painting Models and soldiers for 45 plus years.
I'm from the uk and our water isn't blue... go for a muddy colour with a tint of red for blood. it would be very convincing for the location. also you could try vallejo for making water, they have a mixture you can mix with paints to give a brilliant colour and appearance. apart from that.... very good work and continue on with the diorama! :)
+Julian RedSea Thanks. Land explosions are hard. I haven't seen many convincing one made for a diorama. I don't know how to make a convincing looking one yet.
+Monseigneur Childebert (MrChildebert) Gymnopedie :) You are familiar with classical music. Cool. To me, this song sounds modern and classical. Some of the best songs never sounds old and antiquated. Gymnopedie is one of them. Eric Satie was truly ahead of his time and a true Frenchman! Have a great day! :)
Do you have a video of a Explosion type with say fire and such?? I LOVE THIS, it gives me MORE ideas for something I am working on! THANK YOU! I SUBBED!
+ODDBALL SOK it'll mainly be red actually. most accounts and sources of d day say that the amount of blood actually ran down the beach and into the water near the sand. so a fair amount of it would be blood, add on the amount of bodies that would float around in the water whuch would pile against the tank traps and obstacles you won't see a lot of the water any way
that has got to be the coolest explosion effects I have seen in model building
+modar Thanks :)
Those explosions look very nice to me. Each build is step closer to complete diorama.
+nicopanther Thanks. I'm getting closer all right. I need to start of the base next.
QDC, Maestro, Welcome Back. Sheperd Paine and Francois Verlinden would be very proud of you. well another use for sprues! and all this time I have been making paint stirring sticks with them. Learn something new everyday-Great job!!!
+bob ahnert You're welcome :)
Its a good concept, the blue base does look like a water/waves, but honestly the explosion looks more like some type of coral.
Great method!
Thanks! 😃
Disculpa ese es Silicon del q usan los plomeros???
Sorry, but I have to reply back in English. I am sorry. Yes, it is the same Silicon that plumbers and carpenters use. 😃😃

Great work, very innovative and yet simple -now you have shown us.

Just watched some of you´re old videos while painting some 1:35 soviet miniart figures. And then i see you uploaded this! really nice work with the explosions :) and i like the calm music in the last part of the video, works great with the chaos from the explosions ;) keep up the great work!
+Enflippy I'm flattered that you are a fan of mine :) Thank you.
I greatly admire your work. This explosion effect is very well done. Thank you for posting!
Very stunning job! So far the best idea for my missile coming up from water!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Amazing idea. Looks very convincing!

+Clayton McClain You're welcome :)
Excellent work mate. They will look fantastic on your diorama!
+gav0909 Thank you very much.
Very clever! Those look pretty dang realistic. I'll have to try this. :)
Nice work. What type of paint did you use to make it stick. Cheers.
Very creative - great use of old sprues :)
+Mark Witcher Thanks :)
This is awesome but I do have a question ? Have you ever model raindrops before and if not can you please tell me how to make?
Love the long grin in to the camera
Hey qdc would crazy glue work on rubber band tracks for my model tank?
+Jennifer Machula Yes, it will. Most newer kits formulate their tracks to use ordinary liquid cement to glue them together so read the instructions before you glue :)
Hi Collin ..... super water explosion dio tip ... ! they look realistic .... they can work for terrain too with a little tweaking .... Thank You For Sharing ....
+alolivas You're welcome. I have not tried it on land but I think you're right it would good on land explosions too.
are you gonna put it all together when on the last video
+General Narang I don't know.
Great idea for using what would otherwise be trash.
You inspired me to go out and buy a model car because you really got interested in model kits but idk if the level was too high or because I'd never built a kit before but it was really hard like some pieces snapped, gluing was a nightmare, and over all the instructions aren't enough to help me build the car. +Jeffrey Vidal I might do another one in the future. I did one in the past years ago but I might do another one in the future.
Love the idea and looking forward to experimenting with this.
Just for accuracy, that is not silicone caulking: it is acrylic. The product QDC is using is water cleanup, while silicone caulking is cleanable with mineral spirits. Makes a big difference if you make a mistake!
Nice work looks great!
+Cameron Young Thank you :)
Very cool! Have you ever considered adding a couple layers of clear epoxy on the base? It may add to the texture.
how can I make it look like fire coming out of a flamethrower
Hey Qdc I have so questions to ask you 1 could you build a church hill I am building one with lots of aftermarket accessories 2 you should do something like that were you take a model kit and load it out with tons of after markets accessories
+glen-ross mullen I might do something like that in the future.
+qdc748a thanks that would be awesome and cant weight to see the finished product of your operation overlord diorama its goanna look so cool
Enjoyed that qdc. I guess you could also use acrylic gel medium instead of calking. Calking though is denser though, so it would be easier to mould than gel medium. Have you spilled glue in the past? I love the base that you made up, I am going to do the same - as I HAVE knocked over my glue once
+Adventures in Scale Modeling Yes, I had liquid cement spilled on me many times. That's the reason why I had that gadget made.
Off topic but what's the music at the end of the video?
Start making some more like this trying the cotton balls for smoke next or something that would be good to!
very cool made!!!!! it inspired me to go and do a dio bout the landings myself...thnkzzz👍👍👍
Thanks for the explanation on how to do explosion's in water - I learnt something so I've subscribed to your channel. Have you done one where you do explosion's in other materials such as sand or a rock face - or even snow ? Would snow be similar to water or would it be different ??? Thanks.
I can tell that you are getting tierd with your diorama project. But it's going to be worth it in the end😀
+ITROLLYOU :P Thanks. This will turn out looking great.

It's really cool I like how he recycled his sprue .
Very nice job! I thought you were slightly mad when you started sticking old sprue together, but no, turns out it's a touch of genius instead! :O)
Super effort and how to, thanks !
+pgermain You're welcome :)
Great technique, keepíng the budget low is always important, and lots of sprue leftovers to recycle....cheers...
+Al Carr Thanks. It goes to prove that you don't have to spend lots of money to make a convincing model. I sometimes think that this hobby is too commercialized.

Awesome tutorial, thanks Qdc!
+Burak Ayağ You are welcome :)
great work QDC i learned a lot from this video. I am wondering, will you do explosions on the land to? How can that be done? Thanks
+Julian RedSea Thanks. Land explosions are hard. I haven't seen many convincing one made for a diorama. I don't know how to make a convincing looking one yet.
+qdc748a Thanks for answering, i agree it is hard may be in the future time some idea may come up
Julian RedSea
Great work, love following your builds. keep them coming! 👍
Thanks, I will make one to help with My son's diorama

Brilliant. You make it look too easy :-)
+Stephen Smith :)
Great job my friend, well done.
+jjab99 Thanks
Eric Satie : great choice of music !!!!
+Monseigneur Childebert (MrChildebert) Gymnopedie :) You are familiar with classical music. Cool. To me, this song sounds modern and classical. Some of the best songs never sounds old and antiquated. very good work there.
+UKscalemodeller Thanks
Hey qdc I never new you could do that your very creative you would spend about five pounds on that in a shop ,amazing!!!!;)
+Nigel Crabtree You're welcome. Try it for yourself and see if you like it. It's not very expensive.
Do you have a video of a Explosion type with say fire and such?? I LOVE THIS, it gives me MORE ideas for something I am working on! THANK YOU! I SUBBED!
great tip! thanks for sharing
Great Idea.. Thanks for sharing.... greetings from germany.. ;)
+Ralf Scheidler You are welcome :)
Song from the beginning?
Eric Satie
What are the dimensions for the diorama? Your doing a lot of stuff for it, must be big. Great job on this, keep up the good work ;-)
nice job fella just mind for your operation overlord diorama the English channel isn't a nice blue colour
+69jmcc I'd mix a bit of blue with some browns and dark greens.
+69jmcc That is why it is set on the french side ; La Manche..and there it has a nicer colour :D
+ODDBALL SOK it'll mainly be red actually. most accounts and sources of d day say that the amount of blood actually ran down the beach and into the water near the sand. so a fair amount of it would be blood, add on the amount of bodies that would float around in the water whuch would pile against the tank traps and obstacles you won't see a lot of the water any way
+69jmcc Thanks. That's a popular question I get. I am not using blue in the final work. It would be more of a green appearance once finished.
nice work
+Kelly Cottle Thank you
great tutorial, keep fingers...
+Šotek Thank you
