Gorillaz ARE a trip - their whole concept - even their 1st concerts were animated projections! They're UK based and even we didn't know who the band members were for a while. Most of their stuff is chilled, funk, trip hop, rap/rock, but their videos are always second level and SOOOO creative. The main singer is Damon Albarn from a band called 'Blur' that were big in the 90's as part of the 'BritPop' scene. He was the only permanent member of Gorillaz with other members coming and going and loads of guest artists. Check out them at Glastonbury when Snoop comes out and raps on Clint Eastwood - audience members mind blown!🤯🤣 (traditionally intoxicated on whatever to make 'em 'Feel Good')

Sunshine in a bag is a reference to "the Good the Bad and the Ugly" ( a Clint Eastwood film). In the film its a bag of gold, in the song it's speculated to refer to a bag of marijuana.
Funny that you phrase it as, "started out" in a band, etc. That era could be considered as an entire and very accomplished career in its own right, had he never done anything more.
Gorillaz is an animated band. There are no "real" people in the band. They've got their reasons for that Feel good inc is their other most popular song.

The quote that appears under the "Gorillaz" in the title card is from the movie "Dawn of the Dead". It's 2-D's favorite movie. This has a lot of lore, most of it you can glimpse it in the music videos if watched in chronological order, but their book "Rise of the Ogre" explains everything.
The lead singer behind the cartoon, is Damon Albarn from the group Blur, very popular band from UK in the ‘90’s. Check out his songs “Girls & Boys”, “Coffee & TV” and “Parklife”.
Gorillaz are amazing. Very well know for featuring a different artist/rapper on almost every song. Only permanent band members are Damon (the singer/creator) and Jamie (the animator). My favorites are 19-2000 Soulchild Remix and Feel Good Inc. So cool to see live as well. There was a huge screen and the performers were behind it. Very visual and interesting.
Man, it’s not fair or just how unknown Del the Funky Homosapien is. How can you be Ice Cube’s cousin and be such an incredible lyricist with such a bouncy and unique flow and still be so obscure?
I imagine gold coins as the sunshine in a 💰like in the Wild West. The song is called Clint Eastwood who starred in spaghetti westerns in the 1960’s. The intro to the song plays part of some music from The Good, The Bad & the Ugly Eastwood movie.
Love this song Gorillaz are animated that’s them lol you should check out their other big hits like feel good inc, melancholy hill and Dare (Noodle sings in that one)
The whole concept of gorillaz is to decunstroct music, most of their songs are the combination of genres, the reason for why they are animated is because that way they can experiment with whatever genre they want. They love to combine rock and rap since the creator Damon albarn was the lead singer of blur a punkrock band Any song from the album Demon Days. Plastic beach, the now now and now song machine are all really good to react to! Definetly check out feel good inc since its pretty iconic! Or 19-200! Its amazing to find someone who's interested in gorillaz from the first listen! Cool video!
The rap parts were sung by Teren Delvon Jones known by his stage name as Del the Funky Homo Sapien He's and og old fashioned rapper when it was actually rappin and not just talking fast
It's Damon Albarn, the vocalist of Blur, they created this cartoon band with names, a backstory and everything, great songs, as the videos have released the characters have actually aged as in real life, specially Noodle who started as a little kid
Damon Albarn was my childhood crush, I loved Blur and was so excited when Gorillaz came about and I heard that familiar voice. I just loved his idgaf singing style ♥
This song is about one of Clint Eastwood's movies 'The good, the bad, and the ugly' both Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett are fans of Clint Eastwood. Alot people think that 'Sunshine in a bag' is about drugs, but It's just a bag full of gold, again from the movie. The band is made up of many animators, Cameo celebs, and of course, Damon Albarn(singing voice) and Jamie Hewlett(Artist). 2D, Murdoc, Russell and Noodle are not real people, they were made up by the two. This song was made 2001, this was not their first song, their first song was in 1998, the newest song just came out on Christmas eve of 2020. I highly recommend listening to all of their songs
I’ve been listening to this song for nearly 20 years and I never thought that sunshine in a bag could have been a euphemism for money! Very insightful! I would also recommend from them Feel Good Inc, el manana, Dare, & Plastic Beach
Yes listen to Feel Good Inc. Gorillaz thing is it's an animated band. It's a colab with musician Damon Albarn (who was the lead singer in the band blur) and artist Jamie Hewlett (probably best know for his comic book Tank Girl)
Gorillaz are an animated band created by Damon Albarn, the lead singer of 90's Britpop band Blur and Jamie Hewlett, comic book illustrator for Tank girl. The band members are 2D (the singer) Noodle (the guitarist) Murdoc (the bassist) and Russel (the drummer), each character has it's own backstory and personality which contribute to their storyline/lore. The band are not defined by a genre and mix lot of genres together, this song being an example of alternative rock and rap mixed together. Often there being a "trippy" vibe to their songs and a strong political message. Damon and Jamie originally came up with the idea of the band when they lived together in a flat in East London in 1997, after watching MTV and felt as if there was a "lack of substance" in mainstream music after the rise of manufactured boy/girl bands. You should check out some of their other big hits such as Feel Good Inc and DARE.
It's animated because you can do a whole lot with not a huge budget, with animation. I'm actually surprised that there were so few animated music videos at that time. You had Peter Gabriel's videos and Mathew Sweet - "Girlfriend" and not a whole lot else. Just think how Thirteen Senses would have blown up if instead of waiting for someone to make a fan video from Chevaliers Du Ciel, they had made their own animated video, for instance
Gorrilaz is a collaboration between Damon Albarn the singer with Brit pop band Blur who is responsible for the vocals and artist Jamie Hewlett who does the animation. They are supplemented by different guest artists on their songs.

I would use dancing to it as a reward...ie...ok make your beds then you can hear "a gorilla song" as they called them! Later I saw the video and marveled at such a creative presentation! Great songs! 😽💘
The reason why the animated the videos was because the drummer was underage considerably, in the animation he looks like an adult but at the time that the band formed I think my folks told me he was at the age of 10 to 12 years old therefore he was too young to legally go out on tours with songs so they decide to keep him protected and safe by animating him
This is a virtual band. The cartoon characters on screen are the public face of the band, but are completely fictional and have nothing to do with the actual music. Most of the musicians are rotating roster. This is the creation of an animator, and the singer of Blur (who also plays guitar here). For example, the guest rappers are explained as ghosts who live in Russell's baseball cap.
