This Dutch hymn was written in 1597 and set to a Dutch folk tune. It first appeared in America in 1903 and steadily gained popularity, especially in services of Thanksgiving at town and college centennial celebrations. I hope all of you have a wonderful day tomorrow.
So wonderful! Did you notice that this hymn was written _before_ the first Thanksgiving in 1621? 😊 Leander, how well are you in music theory? Many see it as quite boring, but once you get deeper into it only then will you fully appreciate the masterpieces of the piano repertoire. I hope you can begin with the basics of theory if you haven’t already. UA-cam’s full of such lessons.
@@SaintBernardEnthusiast That is really interesting that the song is even older than Thanksgiving. I want to learn more about music theory. I don't think that I know very much yet.

I'm tearing up. I only knew this song from SNL in the 1970's. Rosanne Rosannadanna sang it on the news segment. To find out now, that it is a real Dutch song and hearing this young man play it, makes my holiday. Thanks dreaming piano. Bedankt dreaming piano. ❤ Happy Thanksgiving from California.
I remember learning to sing that song when I was in elementary school, probably near the same age as you. So that was around 50 years ago. Thank you for sharing it here for this holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to you, dear young man, and your family, too. I hope you have a joyous, meaningful day.

This song 'Wilt heden nu treden' was originally published in 'Neder-landtsche Gedenck-Clanck' by Adriaan Valerius, in 1626. This book is a history of the 80-years war of the Netherlands against Spain, illustrated with songs. (i.e., up to the author's death in 1625). Valerius wrote new words to existing and often well-known melodies. In this case he used the melody of a song called 'Hey, wilder dan wild, wie zal mij temmen', published in 1617. This particular songs commemorates the successful campaign against the Spaniards by Prince Maurits in 1597, in which three provinces were liberated from Spanish rule. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrianus_Valerius?wprov=sfla1 Beautifully played, Leander!
Another fine piece of work, young man! Thank you for posting. I guess it's the season; I was just playing the same hymn 30 minutes ago! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you, Leander, for playing such a fine arrangement of 'We Gather Together' (To Ask The Lord's Blessing). From my hymnal: Dutch Folk Song Words Tr. Theodore Baker (1851-1934). Netherlands/(Dutch) Folk Song 1626. Music Arr. Edward Kremser (1838-1914). Verse 1: "We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing, He chastens/(disciplines) and hastens/(hurries) His will to make known; The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing. Sing praises to His name; He forgets not His own. Be Well.
Again I am impressed by your skills, your finger work, and this fine interpretation of that beautiful piece of music. Thank you for sharing your talent with the youtube community.
Oh, THANK YOU, Leander! I was hoping you would play this one! It’s one of the “Big Three” Thanksgiving hymns for me. (The other two are “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” and “Now thank We All Our God”). We learned all three verses of “We Gather Together to Ask the Lord’s Blessing” in elementary school and sang it for a special Thanksgiving assembly - it was a public school but no one was offended by it. Happy Thanksgiving!
That's the tune I remember from my childhood and Thanksgiving. That sounds like it might have been an arrangement for pipe organ. Have you ever tried playing a pipe organ? Or have you watched the movie August Rush? (It's one you would like.)
This magical young man never ever fails to delight me. I love his introductions and his huge smile, which lights up the universe, at the end. Great work and great playing young man! You're the best. Keep well and keep safe!
Your Thanksgiving series has been a beautiful welcome to the holiday season. I am looking forward hopefully to your Christmas series. Do you think Scott Joplin ever played Silent Night?🙂
Just BEAUTIFUL! One of my favorite hymns -- well played! You could easily fill a church sanctuary playing this on a grand piano. You have a nice reach for octaves already. Loved the modulation to Db (gets you away from that pesky D key). Someday you will refine your technic for scalewise passages to be a little quieter (in terms of finger motion). You would also enjoy playing this on an organ ... I hope that your Thanksgiving day is blessed with much Joy and good health for you and your family!
one of the better pieces you have played, hymns are something so many people can relate too, clasic all just sound like the same thing is just being played over and over, can you try out southern gospel type songs I'd love to hear you play those and to see how well you can make those sound, Great job as always, thanks
