What a stunning short film! ‘Skin of Marble’ is a poignant exploration of love and loss, perfectly inspired by Manto’s genius. The cinematography and performances are simply breathtaking. It’s a must-watch for anyone who appreciates heartfelt storytelling. Bravo to the entire team!
Manto courageously addressed the stereotypes associated with fair skinned. The story skillfully under lines the fact that values, which we regard very highly as Indians are not just owned by us. Emotions of love, loyalty, sacrifice is universal, no matter what culture we belong to or language we speak. Also, another beautiful aspect of the story is that, there is no negative character in it. Each of the character has her/her own understanding of commitment, including the father himself. They were all correct in holding their positions. Keeping in mind, the era in which story was written ( in the backdrop of partition riots) i think it was a very balanced representation of communities involved, as well. The twist in end, was gruesome, but it was needed to show the sacrifice that supersedes all or else the story would have been lame and too predictable. The skill of writing short stories require unpredictability factor- a little hook at the end, which keeps reader guessing. As far as acting goes, boy have very inexpressive eyes and thats my only issue. For rest, they all did the decent job. The real winner though is story. Amazing work by Manto. Good short story
It was a very touching short film ....surprised by the large number of negative comments...all the actors did a great job ...male and female lead also did their parts so well ...some dark truths behind castes and their consequences have been highlighted so well ...

This is philosophy. The first short story that actually resonates with the role of short stories in society. Short stories used to be typical in that they left raw, open ended questions prima facie and this is one of the few stories that does so. I am shocked to see such a reaction among the viewers. Heightens respect for philosophers and shows how diluted and short sighted is today's vision. Makes me realise that "the mob" is eternal in its being.

Well... not everyone is expected to digest manto.. In the story he reflects on how hypocritical Indian men are/were. While it is common for a "cultured indian man" to have a perception of a western women as he describes violet after his hurt ego. The irony though is that she is the one that makes the grand humanist sacrifice to save his and his "family's" Honor. Every detail of the story is critical of Indian male hypocrisy.... The story shows male hypocrisy but doesn't show anything great about the two women either. None of the women have any dignity/self respect. To be precise I don't think audience can relate to it.
Despite being set in early India; story lacks basic human instinct of "Fight or Flight". The male character is a hypocrite. Few get the chance to die with honor and he never even tried to save his one true love. Is this about the same India where till this day Honor killings are common place? Also sexier white female will not necessarily mean all four Goons will run after her. Fight or flight always or you all will surely die in a riot.

Good work by violet, the story shows intense love of violet for her lover and it shows the limits to which one can go to save her/his lover (from violet's side), but at the same place it do not shows the same feeling from boys side. He easily fled and left her lover to be raped or even killed by those mens. The story was good but it could be better if they had shown the boy fight till death to save his lover, which I think would naturally be anybody's reation, in his place.

Truly appreciable, respect commanded by an individual is derived from the sacrifices of innocent lives, a touching inspirational story reminding that unknown beautiful lives are sacrificed when violence and hatred are encouraged.
I am not sure what film maker try to portray. An Indian young man who dont trust his true love, come to any conclusion by trusting anyone he meets and suddenly loves his fiance for her value, culture etc! And finally who dont even have the courage to fight!
This story made me cry and felt sadness. I never understand why it is big deal for people in South Asia, who cannot take their word back. What they said at the first place.
I like this film. This film with a good story, superb acting specially young man character, Directions all are superb. I hope it would never happened in real. Love u to all
moral - Indian women and foreign women are both capable of true love. we shouldn't judge.. there are women from all cultures who have values... we shouldnt assume anything based on where they are from
I'm not sure if the story and the plot could be any more contrived (forced)! The very basis of it is flawed. 'An Indian going abroad to study' aisa hota tha... but an English woman coming to India for studies... naah! i don't buy it... And the entire thing with the letters! It's so badly written... Her coming to save him out of nowhere! Again, very contrived. The dialogue seems more for exposition than for taking the narrative forward! The cutting, shot selection and lighting (especially the ECU of Violet in the beginning, couldn't be more forced) has seemingly no justification! And very successfully it took me out of the film! Their acting - deplorable. They are clearly trying too hard... Phir Naseer sahab ki entry and I want to watch the film, just for him. But you give him lines after lines that have information/exposition written all over them... and then at 05:00 the camera jerk! I am out of the film again! Music, too overused, too over-the-top! The transitions between scenes don't work well at all... The production design, especially for the outdoor scenes is shoddy. The costumes don't feel right, neither does the make-up! The film is really bad, period. It's extremely difficult to like any aspect of the film at all...
shwetabh suman :) I'm sure. But we need to put things to context here. We are looking at 1940s. And in the early 20th century, women in Britain itself were not given even educational opportunity/award/recognition. The most prestigious of universities were allowed to limit the number of female students relative to male students. It was only post-1975 that women got equal education opportunity in Britain. Hence, I think, the idea of an English woman coming to India as a student in the 1940s is too contrived. :)
agree with you Rajdeep. That ECU is there probably because they thought of doing the letterboxing later. but it's really awkward. And those slide transitions in between scenes are also so strange, so conspicuous and unreal. And the guy's character is really strange. the patriarchal, disloyal, egocentric.... and yet the film takes on him in a soft light, which is the worse thing about the film.
Couldn't agree more with you. What message did the film want to give? Though the background music soothes, it is not in sync with the cinematography. Moreover, the plot even though has a rock base, it isn't executed well. Disappointed yet happy... Nasser saahab jo the.
Mr Punkaj Parashar, you ruined the image of a true Indian man. He would have died while rescuing a lady's dignity no matter she might have broken his heart. Woman's dignity come first against all personal hatred. If Param dies in the end after knowing the truth, your film might have been batter...
Very regressive story! The guy is so shallow you almost find him disgusting. After being rejected by the girlfriend, he shows off his 'loyal' wife (who actually has no substance) to get even with his girlfriend. Even when he sees his girlfriend's sacrifice he is OK to throw her to those vultures. So cliched and uninspiring. I wonder what made Naseeruddin Shah to take up this project!
Mandeep Dhami tanne bada Dhyan se, aaya vadda fuck up waala. Now, don't try to be oversmart again by doing some fullish reply on this comment, instant of just send me the single link something you create (Ur own). 🤨🤨
Such a waste-forced storytelling, terrible acting(except Mr.Shah) and miserable editing. Wonder what made Naseeruddin Shah even agree to this. Bad one.
I think everybody is misunderstanding the concept.. here the main aim of director was to show how far a woman can go for her love.. but on the same side it contradicts with the indian woman and also the cowardliness shown by the man is not acceptable. Only thing here director forgot that his full attention was towards the character of the foreigner girl.. thats it.. don't mess it by saying that he is trying to show that rape is better than death.. i don't see anything like that here..
I dont understand the message of the story. What did they want to convey? Such a sacrifice? Is it really a sacrifice worth the man's character? Infact, is this sacrifice realistic?
Why? Good script....good production value..ruined by mediocre acting of the actor...and you don't share my opinion that this bloke needs to polish his craft a little more??
This was way below #LargeShortFilms standard - Terrible acting by the lead actor - Loose plot - Horrible editing And let's not even get into the messaging....
Looking from a "True love" demonstration point of view, it is an amazing movie. However, major things in the movie demonstrate a very negative thought for the youth. It somewhere says that whatever it is, it will be a girl who will suffer. Talking about the Punjabi girl, she was told that her husband is her go, and even though the guy doesn't love her, she will have to marry her, and she will happily do that. On the other side, the British girl who loved the guy so much got raped at the end and also could not get the one whom she loved. This truly gives a wrong message to the society. It somewhere says whatever it is it will be women who will be troubled, who will be raped, who will face problems, men always play safe. Disappointing!! :(
I was literally thinking this while I watched the movie. While I can appreciate the poetic idea behind this, it is still a deeply pervasive viewpoint. It is sort of disturbing how Param turned against Violent and the way he addressed her when she decided to leave him. Words like "whore" and the ideation that a woman who isn't sacrificing lacks values and culture are problematic. This account of history by an extremely patriarchal man supposedly is of course sending a violent message to the viewers. I don't think that the movie is brilliant or that this conception even is something unheard of before. It is a reproduction of a tired ideation even if it is coming via a great poet.
Love is beyond language..beyond religioun.., beyond colour ..beyond nationality..beyond humanity.. Love is God's ownself.. Cant get over the horrendous end
Nonsense film watched for Naseruddin shah mainly, what was Mr Parashar saying is a big question, a characterless Indian?...Why was the English girl so glorified...overall a big flop...there was no sustance...overrated.

Women have lots of courage to sacrifice in love 🥺 Master piece 🙏❤ nice Drama build-up and good concept.
I like this film. This film with a good story, superb acting specially young man character, Directions all are superb. I hope it would never happened in real. Love u to all
❤❤❤one who has done height of sacrifices will understand beauty of this film
moral - Indian women and foreign women are both capable of true love. we shouldn't judge.. there are women from all cultures who have values... we shouldnt assume anything based on where they are from
The most depressing and disturbing ending, sala neend ni ayegi!!! 😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😓😓😓
Poetry in historys motion.learnt a chapter from writing many verses.lovely tale.mystique and beauty.all best to crew.stay safe
Rajdeep Dhanuka I study at JNU and there are many foreigners from Korea, spain, Britain, china, Nigeria, US etc studying here.
shwetabh suman :) I'm sure.
Rajdeep Dhanuka
It's your like and opinion.I have my likes and opinion. It's not a documentary.
Baapu ji ne hindi mein samjha dia Angrejan ko , kya baat hai !
I loved this flim so much no matter this flim not belongs to it's poster that is nashrudin shah...
It's a great story
Awesome ❤️
👍👍👍 Really she sacrified all for him !!
How he didn't trust her fully !
So sad!!!!❤️
Mr Punkaj Parashar, you ruined the image of a true Indian man. He would have died while rescuing a lady's dignity no matter she might have broken his heart. Woman's dignity come first against all personal hatred. If Param dies in the end after knowing the truth, your film might have been batter...
loved reading the comment!
This is the truth, my dear; but hard for you to swallow. True Indian man is coward when it comes to sacrifice.
Why should a man put his life in danger for a woman who betrayed him?
Aiman Shaikh click
come and meet me. I will show you how coward we are.
Great work guys, excellent job, I'm speechless
Damnn mann that was so intense that ending just blew up my mind and heart as well that literally gave me goosebumps
Keep it up guys
By reading Comments..I remember my Father’s words... MANTO SAHAB KO SAMAJH LENA ITNA BHI ASAAN NAHI HAI JITNA AAM LOG SAMAJH LETE HAIN❤️🙏
Sick!!!
Wonder how an actor of nazeeruddin shah ‘s stature agreed to do this kind of a film!!
exactly 😕
Seems like something manto would write. Totally loved it !
Varsha Dighe exactly. Disgusting plot...worst was the guy's and the wife's character
His voice is like Farhan akhtr a bit ...!!🤔don't you think??😅
anuj singh yes

Pankaj-ji, Hats off to you..... Khoob bani film...
Every story can't have a happy ending we are use to see happy ending in every movie that's why some didn't like it much .
Not well executed.
Moreover it was a fuck up
not cool #LargeShortFilms

Nitin Sharma tereko film achi lagi toh film me dhyaan de, tu comments dekhne aya tha ki movie?
Now this is called "Akhand Chutiyapa"
Such a waste-forced storytelling, terrible acting(except Mr.Shah) and miserable editing. Wonder what made Naseeruddin Shah even agree to this. Bad one.
Well said!
I agree the bad aspects but the message was delivered
So what was the msg- two ladies for one man so one can be thrown to save own life 😂 man man man
one of best n best story..act is too much good ..thanks alot
Very Nice Story and Deep Love and sacrifice showing in this short movie...Very Emotional
WTF!!!
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen.
Retelling of tragedy movie stories of the 40s and 50s🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️.
completely agree with you. But perhaps some of india is still stuck in that time.
Murkho ki bheed me ek akela samajhdaar 👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍
You right #gaurav, but what's the role of param for his love then??
I dont understand the message of the story. What did they want to convey? Such a sacrifice? Is it really a sacrifice worth the man's character? Infact, is this sacrifice realistic?
Aditi Chourey Not at all! It's bullshit
heart touching story..i cried seeing the last scene...but the boy doesnt deserve the love of that girl...!!
A women has values if she sacrifices everything, sticks with same guy even if he cheats/betrays. Cool
its an insult to Naseer Sahab to pair this guy opposite him....
Why? Good script....good production value..ruined by mediocre acting of the actor...and you don't share my opinion that this bloke needs to polish his craft a little more??
I'm surprised that Naseeruddin Shah would even act in a pathetic, unrealistic movie like this.
This was way below #LargeShortFilms standard
- Terrible acting by the lead actor
- Loose plot
- Horrible editing
And let's not even get into the messaging....
Best review of the film!
best answer of all. Brilliant! Dhanyevaad!
M speechless, .. so nice , 👌👌👌👌👌
