Shares in Netflix tumbled 12 percent in after-hours trading. That's after the company missed its subscriber growth target for the last quarter. Investors ignored the company's huge leap in revenue after it raised prices last year. The company blamed pandemic-related production delays for what it calls a lighter content slate than usual.
For more on that we go over to Susannah Streeter, she's a senior analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.
Susanna, good to have you on the show. The CEO of Netflix called this a ‘wobbly time’ for the company. Is it about the company itself or is it about where the market for streaming currently finds itself?
I think it's a bit of both actually and it seems as though those bumps in the road aren't going to be smoothed out anytime soon. Of course, subscriber growth is really the only number that matters for Netflix and it's been crucial for its success but of course, there are rivals snapping around its heels now the likes of Disney, the likes of Apple.
To what extent can Netflix do more to attract more subscribers? It has such a massive attraction in the last year and it seems like now it's trying to squeeze water from a stone.
Well, content is king and this is where Netflix has done extremely well in the past. It spent 3.3 a billion pounds alone in the last quarter so this is very expensive for the business and going forward. It's going to really be all about who is going to create the best shows to lure those people in, lure your viewers back to their TV screens instead of going out to sample other entertainment now available.
