  • The rowboat, JAMES ROBERT HANSSEN was capsized on a trip from Senegal to Miami for the OAR Northwest Africa to the Americas Expedition Sponsored by the Canadian Wildlife Federation. After the Capsize the team and the sponsor banded together to go back and retrieve the boat. In a wild set of events, they managed to secure an aircraft and a tugboat in less than a week and with nothing but a coast guard algorithm estimating the search area for the boat (like looking for a parked car in the size of Rhode Island). On this boat was footage that became Dateline's 'Capsized.' This footage was taken by Christopher Yapp, the brother of team member Markus Pukonen.

Since it was recovered it's been in a museum. In the last year, the museum it was at no longer has room for it and this boat with a Guinness World Record and a capsize under it is belt is being decommissioned in Port Townsend with a boat funeral.

What a miracle that you all were able to find your vessel, almost a needle in the haystack! I know you did the best you could finding her and getting her back home on short notice after the capsizing and rescue. Can’t wait for the second memoir someday! Or else I’ll make do with the great Dateline piece “Capsized!” 👏🏽🙏🏽💖👏🏽

It was at least three miracles! I hope that I get this story out in more ways over the next few years!

Tag lines should be affixed to the ends of the lifted object, not the center.

I had just finished rowing the thing with my crew. We capsized and a crazy series of events led to this rescue even being an option. I had no idea what I was doing. The captain of the tug just told me his guys were not going to get in the water and we had to figure it out and could use his tools. There were language barriers and just a general crazy to the whole operation considering we were not even sure we'd find it in the first place.

I'm just glad no one got hurt. It was a wild set of circumstances that lead into this starting months before in Africa.

You guys are making me sweat...someone's going to get pinched and gravity going to kill someone. Nice recovery but OMG...that was a trip.

Tell me about it. This was one of the craziest things I found myself doing after 72 days rowing the thing from Africa and capsizing, on top of 55 days in Senegal waiting for the boat to show up (it was supposed to be two weeks.) All of it was just absolutely wild. Its hard for me to watch this and its been ten years.

@@tinyboatsession7436 Holy Molly...72 days of rowing. Just saying '72 days of rowing' exhausts me...haha.I have so many questions but this isn't the platform for small talk. Did you publish anything? A book, a blog, a diary? Maybe clamshell messages on the ocean? I'd love to read about it if anything is available. Google my name with New Jersey added...you find a way to email me. I'm a photographer...Google away and thanks for sharing.

After her rescue she had to take control of her boat to stop it from being smashed to pieces, the one guy says, it's OK it fiberglass 😂

I think that might have been me. I just was praying that no one got hurt. It was not ideal, but we didn't leave it in the ocean, retrieved science equipment, footage (that ended up on 'Dateline's Capsized' and some personal stuff that could not be replaced.

@TinyBoatSession any rescue with no injuries or loss of life is a job well done.

@@alanhealth8132 Thank you. It wasn't the cowboy stuff we'd planned to do, but it was the cowboy stuff that got put in our hands and we did our best with what we had, and what we knew at the time.
