Excellent panel. Glad we are finally starting to talk about the takeover of our democracy by fundamentalist theocrats. But it isn’t discussed enough.

I spoke to a little old lady at the grocery store a sweet little kind old lady and she said she was going to vote for Trump. And I had a kind open conversation with her and tried to explain to her republicans want to scare their voters and what they're doing to old people is disgusting. Go listen AM talk radio and listen to these republican pundits who spread fear. Do you think that's why Donald Trump keeps saying he wants to save am radio ? My grandfather fought in World War 2 in Korea and in the last years of his life listen to Michael savage and became a racist afraid of everything and everyone that wasn't white.
And I don't want to burst anybody's bubble but it was Hillary Clinton that first mentioned the rise of the republican alt right. And Mrs. Clinton was a 100% right
The founders were Deists. God was a choice. 💙
I love that these three people know each other & share their ideas. The volume of knowledge & wisdom they have given us is an embarrassment of riches.

The founding fathers avarice in justify slavery is no different than current corporate greed. We cannot stop striving for true progress. We are not there yet.

I went to college and got a BA in political science with heaps of philosophy and law with the objective of it aiding me in attaining my future law degree but alas my law degree was not meant to be. Though I feel otherwise I constantly have people telling me that it is a terrible shame that I wasted my BA with such a senseless major. Though my major did not empower me with the capacity to attain infinite wealth I feel it did allow me to be a better citizen. Hopefully a citizen with a greater understanding of humanity. Democracy ain’t perfect …just the best government that we can choose.

Ken Burns is the best person to make a film documentary...smart and honesty personified in all his films as we all learn from whatever film we are watching that he and his brother made for PBS!!!! Thank you Ken!! You are amazing and humble with the accolades that have been given to you for your work in documentation! You are so special and loved by many citizens in our nation and rightfully so!!

Heather Cox Richardson from the 35 minute mark on is absolutely inspiring and amazing. This is the part that gives anyone paying attention hope that is required right now.
This is great stuff...I feel I need to rewatch every two months, as to remind myself of our blessings and our responsibilities.
Such an important distinction: not FEELING good but BEING good. We have totally forgotten that.

Never has it been so easy to hang out with such brilliant people than here on YT. Yes, there's no shortage of garbage, but I'm not forced to sit through that stuff. I also love the incredible range of music that various people share. I can find any genre of music throughout the history of recorded music.
Excellent discussion! My goal these days is to learn something profound every day. This panel has been given me enough challenges to keep me busy for most of April. I love the assertion that the Revolutionary War is over, but the Revolution continues….we must fight against acquiescence to the MAGA authoritarianism. Trump promises a continuation of the caste system that has developed since the Supreme Court decided that corporations are people. I will not live to see this needed reversal, as Chief Justice John Roberts is certain to outlive me. I’m hoping to last longer than Clarence Thomas, though!
I am hopeful that we, the American citizenry, declare enough is enough and demand term limits and strict rules of behavior for SCOTUS. (Bribes, recusal, insider trading, conflicts of interest, etc.)
The pursuit of character, of empathy and civic respect. Dignity of humanity. The most ordinary I find the most beautiful. The real Jesus was the Anti trump.

This country makes it easier to achieve an education which is just the beginning of our own personal growth. I am an immigrant who has been moderately successful and I can look back and see today my children having achieved a good education and all because of their intelligence and willingness to work hard, they did through educational programs that are available to all, I being a widow could not afford what I wanted for them but they did go after the opportunities offered.

I suspect that immigrants see and appreciate many things that spoiled and entitled 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation Americans take for granted.

Her prediction for 2028 gave me hope that I haven't felt in far too long.
I come from an educational background of math and science and self education in many other areas. This program confirms much of what I believed and suspected. Thank you for my continuing education in the history of our country.
I forgot to make my point, a point I make to myself as a reminder. No matter what one’s background study, it is a better education, at least for me, to be a generalist swimming in many waters.

I adore book fests and am glad I lived in the South where writing was an art. Met Wendell Berry and Adrienne Rich in Nashville.
A life-long-learner is what I am. Mentally, psychologically, and spiritually. Reading non-fiction is my addiction. The concept of owning another human is anathema to me. I'm from Virginia, that divided state with plantation gentry who contributed so much good and bad to the country from the beginning.
Science and art go together naturally. I'm a geologist and knew lots of geologists who played instruments. We were rock-and-roll majors.

I would challenge all of you to take some time to find more scholars of a multitude of races to grow this discussion. Do the same thing to find a way to grow our Democracy and improve what the founding fathers were reaching for in America.
The consciousness movement shows we can change. We call it practice.

I hate to remind you that at the time of the writing of the Constitution "the pursuit of happiness" referred to divorce. Anglican Virginia and Catholic Maryland had to reconcile it's beliefs with Quakers and New England Protestants so that all of the colonies could sign on to the new nation.

A good panel. But how like the U.S> to usurp the title that the concept of democracy and equality stemmed from them, from Jefferson. Surely a bit of classical reading will point to the ancient Greeks (remember the origin of the word 'Democracy') - and of Socrates in particular, will help. Socrates himself struggled tremendously with the 'purity' and practicality of the concept.

The US Constitution was a mutual defense pact.
That's why they were called " free and independent states" not provinces or counties.
The FFs had in mind agrarian fiefdoms for white landlords (most slaveowners). Themselves.
The Bill of Rights was a repudiation of British military/monarchist rule.
The US Senate was the check on federal power. Nearly all of the FFs were opposed to national gov't, national army, national currency etc. A lot of concessions were demanded and made to the wealthy planters particularly concerning slaves and slavery. The 3/5 clause is absurd.
We all know only white male landowners could vote. The idea the Constitution was about equality and democracy is simply nonsense. Even the Continental soldiers were cut out of the mix.

Yes, hopefully we may continue to strive for "a more perfect union." Certainly there remains work to be done.
President Franklin Roosevelt's Annual Message (Four Freedoms) to Congress (1941) excerpts:
"Certainly this is no time for any of us to stop thinking about the social and economic problems which are the root cause of the social revolution which is today a supreme factor in the world.
"For there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy. The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are:
"Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.
"Jobs for those who can work.
"Security for those who need it.
"The ending of special privilege for the few.
"The preservation of civil liberties for all.
"The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living.
"These are the simple, basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The inner and abiding strength of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations."
Later he goes on:
"Since the beginning of our American history, we have been engaged in change -- in a perpetual peaceful revolution -- a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changing conditions--without the concentration camp or the quick-lime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society.

Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights or keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose.
