When I first heard this song on the radio way back when, I immediately went to the music store and bought the cassette, that's how long ago it came out!! She become an instant household name in my house and loved her since for her short solo career. Unfortunately, she went back to backup singing but her quality and emotion in her singing is totally another level!!
I'm glad you finally caught up this recommendation I gave to you at least a year and a half ago. Lisa sang for the great Luther Vandross for longer than she did for The Rolling Stones, and did more concerts with him than she did for The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner and Sting combined. Lisa was one of the stars of the movie "Twenty Feet From Stardom". Lisa is still going strong at the ripe young age of 63, and performing in and around her and my native Brooklyn. She is still just as beautiful, and she can still hit that F6. Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown are two other great and underrated singers of that era, but IMO Lisa tops them both vocally and in under appreciation. Whitney never sang whistle notes, but Mariah of course does. Mariah's notes though were never as rich, full, and pretty as Lisa's.
Studied at Julliard, embodies absolute pitch, and takes care of her God-given, highly trained instrument. Plus her ability to express emotion with that voice -- oh, my!
I'm grateful that she was able to get her foot in by singing background for so many greats. But let's be honest here. is it just me, or don't it seem like a crime against humanity to have such a warm, powerful, yet innocent and angelic voice singing background for anyone. She reminds me of a mix of Whitney Houston and Aritha Franklin. I'm happy she won a Grammy for this song, but i still believe she was HIGHLY under rated and didn't get the full shine she deserved.
Thank you so much, Harri, for choosing my suggestion! I LOVED your reaction. Ms. Fischer is indeed in a class by herself. She still performs, and can still achieve these heights. She has a small band, and they appear mainly in small intimate venues.
You should check out her performance with the Stones of Gimme Shelter. More specifically the 1995 Amsterdam live rendition. She blows away the whole damn place.
When she won the Grammy. She tied with Patti LaBelle wish I thought wasn't fair. More outstanding is who she was up against Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin.
Absolutely amazing. Beautiful Lady with an unbelievable voice. Goodness gracious. Shades of Whitney and Mariah on steroids. Her flow and control are masterful. Great reaction Harri. We may need to check your BP. Lol. Thanks Harri and Terry. Fabulous choice. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You should watch 20 Feet From Stardom ...its a documentary about background singers (Lisa is featured in this along with a lot of other amazing background singers) you will love this movie!!!!!
Just an incredible voice! Wow, what is that? ... a 5 octave range? I am mostly aware of her work as a back-up singer. She has the definitive performance with the Stones on Gimme Shelter.
....Patti Labelle....Pink..and Trent Reznour of the group...Nine Inch Nails....Chaka Khan...Dionne Warwicke.....Sting........on and on i could go...she is about the WORK....
Soul music was her calling! If you wanna hear some powerful whistle notes check out Betty Wright singing "No Pain No Gain" and Minnie Riperton singing anything. Also check out Stephanie Mills singing "Home", Phyllis Hyman singing "Living All Alone" and the most powerful song and singer ever Jennifer Holliday singing "And I'm Telling You"
Wow! I often struggle to find the beauty in the highest notes; they can border on 'noise' for me, and my ears prefer a good tenor or a cello! But THAT is how they're meant to be comfortably and beautifully sung! Thanks both, for suggesting and reacting.
Glad you asked. According to Lisa's interviews (I am paraphrasing here) . . . She began a solo career in the early '90s, with the help and encouragement of her mentor, Luther Vandross. That's when her album, including this song, was released. (The song was Grammy nominated, and her performance on the single actually did win a Grammy.) However, the whole experience eventually led her to realization that this was not the kind of life that she wanted. She actually preferred to work collaboratively with a wide range of artists, working on an array of projects, and dabbling in a variety of musical styles. So, by her own choice, she tabled her solo career, and went back to working as a backup singer and guest artist. She quickly became one of the most sought-after backup in the business. As Harri mentioned, she toured and/or appeared with some real heavy hitters, such as The Rolling Stones (for about 25 years, she went on every tour, and was featured on Gimme Shelter and other songs), Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Nine Inch Nails, Sting, and Chris Botti. In 2005, she was featured in an Oscar-winning documentary about the life of backup singers, called "20 Feet From Stardom," which introduced her to people outside the music business. Not long after that, she began touring with her own little band (Grand Baton), appearing mainly in small, intimate venues. She is also often asked to make special appearances, from symphonic, to showtunes, to jazz, to movie soundtracks, and everything in between. If she had opted to pursue a solo career back in the 90s, I have no doubt that she would have become as well-known as Whitney or Mariah or anyone else. But she's to be commended for recognizing that this kind of life was not for her, and for having the courage and conviction to follow her own unconventional path.
Lisa Fischer chose not to be a solo star! Luther Vandross who she did backup for years, produced this her first Solo album. She sang also with Tina Turner, Rolling Stones, and Chaka Kahn, and Sting. She preferrs being her own boss singing with whomever she wants! Yes...shes Baadass and the World knows it!

I totally agree!!! 💯 ❤❤❤

She’s fantastic! I saw her with the Stones.

She chose to go back to background singing because she prefers that. It was Luther who pushed her to go solo. She did win a Grammy for this song.
My all time favorite R&B female vocalist, hands down.
Awesome been listening for 30 yrs

Same in Toronto in 94
When she won the Grammy. She tied with Patti LaBelle wish I thought wasn't fair. More outstanding is who she was up against Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin.
And did you notice Bobby Caldwell singing back-up.
When she sang with Mick live doing "Gimme Shelter" she really rocked.
Absolutely amazing. Beautiful Lady with an unbelievable voice. Goodness gracious. Shades of Whitney and Mariah

Awww Harri, you are blushing!
What a beautiful song Terri. An amazing woman with an amazing voice. And I have to agree with Harri about the legs.😂☮️
Just an incredible voice! Wow, what is that? ... a 5 octave range? I am mostly aware of her work as a back-up singer. She has the definitive performance with the Stones on Gimme Shelter.

....Patti Labelle....Pink..and Trent Reznour of the group...Nine Inch Nails....Chaka Khan...Dionne Warwicke.....Sting........on and on i could go...she is about the WORK....
that was amazing
I keep saying this they need Lisa fischer on shows like the voice she would be an excellent vocal coach or Rachelle ferrell
She made it look so easy as well. It sounded like it from around 93-95. That probably when the song came out.
You're very close. This performance is from 1992. The song was released in '91.
Wow. I love soul and she is old school. Is it 1973? Beautiful!
The song was release in '91, and this performance was in '92.
Lisa was one Luther Vandross’s main background singers
Soul music was her calling! If you wanna hear some powerful whistle notes check out Betty Wright singing "No Pain No Gain" and Minnie Riperton singing anything. Also check out Stephanie Mills singing "Home", Phyllis Hyman singing "Living All Alone" and the most powerful song and singer ever Jennifer Holliday singing "And I'm Telling You"
Mariah also has ALOT of power whistle moments as well
Minnie Riperton and Mariah Carey IMO are the only two other singers that can hit that high power whistle.
Yes. A Betty Wright. .. that live version .. those whistle tones. I absolutely adore Lisa Fischer ❤❤
It’s head voice
You need to broaden your music horizon! Check out the live concert verion of Betty Wright singing "No Pain No Gain"@@kayrobbie5840
I just discovered that she has been with Luther for years.
You would like Deborah Cox “Nobody’s supposed to be here”
Wow! I often struggle to find the beauty in the highest notes; they can border on 'noise' for me, and my ears prefer a good tenor or a cello! But THAT is how they're meant to be comfortably and beautifully sung! Thanks both, for suggesting and reacting.
Her voice is still ridiculous!! Still touring
Then she just quickly bowed, and humbly walked off the stage all innocent as if she didn't just slay that whole audience
She made a lot money
Why was she not promoted more, over the years? She's a show-stopper!

I was gonna let him know if you didn't... And she still has that fabulous voice.
Chaka's last name is pronounced Khaaan with a flat a.
truly great, but the studio version is even better as is the title track from Fischer's album "So Intense".
How are your heart's?
Lisa Fischer chose not to be a solo star! Luther Vandross who she did backup for years, produced this her first Solo album. She sang also with Tina Turner, Rolling Stones, and Chaka Kahn, and Sting. The abhorrent subtitles ruined this for me
