      Thank you, I'm glad you found it useful. I'll be back out soon and there is no doubt I'll be doing this loop again.

    Thanks for this video. I work in Jersey and live north of Newburgh. Lately when I go home I've been driving through Harriman Park because the thruway is boring. I recognize so many parts of the park in this video. I would have to say that February through May is probably the best time to hike Harriman. The trails aren't overgrown with weeds and vegetation and the bugs are minimal. For example, right now, the part of the red cross trail when you cross that field is completely overgrown. Again, thanks. I really enjoy your videos.

      I know that spot well (the field). I can only imagine what it looks like now. I do plan on doing the same loop again soon but in reverse so we'll see how it looks then. I'll probably be heading back in September, right after I get back from New Hampshire.

    Watched this last night. Great video! I have been hiking there over 40 years. I have seen so many changes over the years. Never gets dull...Bald Rocks area is very cool and my favorite place and I did a shorter loop same time as you. I enter and return from the "crooked road" gate on 106. I give you credit...10 hours sleep in the "bush". Wow. Again great video. Loved it.

      Awesome, glad you enjoyed it. HAHA, yeah out in the woods is the only place I can truly sleep soundly. Listening to the crickets and other wildlife just knocks me right out.

      There is a distinct possibility we crossed paths. I spend a lot of time in Harriman.

    Thanks Caps, was looking for just such a trip for this spring. I live on long island an just started backpacking again after many many years. Great video.

      I think you will definitely enjoy this one. In terms of difficulty I'd say this is a 3 out of 10. You get some good climbs but a lot of it is very easy going, especially once you are on the Long Path.

    Great Video. Thank you so much, brought back memories of my days at Lake Welch, Bear Mountain, and the Adirondacks in Horicon, NY Boy Scout Camp Read. Please make more. Enjoy every hike. Also, Have you seen any Rattle Snakes and Black Bear in that area? They say there is a lot of both of them in the park. I would prefer Bears over Snakes any day.
    Unfortunately, I can't walk anymore because of much needed double hip surgery needed and Lyme disease.
    Everyone said it was because I was always in the woods but you know what, I would not do anything different so you keep enjoying your hikes and I will be hiking right along with you on my 22" HD monitor, LOL. Glad I found your channel.
    Thanks, Man, Stay Safe

      Thank you, I'm so glad that you are enjoying the videos. I will certainly keep up with more trips very soon. I have seen only one rattlesnake and no bears. The last time I was there I was talking to a gentleman that saw one near the parking lot of Silver Mine Lake so they are definitely in the area.
      I always have that fear going out that I'll miss a tick and end up getting bitten but just like you there is no way I am going to do anything differently. There are few times in my life I can say I'm totally at peace, being in the woods is one of those times! Permethrin has been my loyal friend this season as the ticks are bad in the NE.
      Thanks brother for finding the channel and for enjoying my trips.
      Safe travels!

    Nice enjoyable video. I've been doing solo over nights all throughout Harriman the last 4 years.

    Last week I saw a timber rattlesnake for the first time crossing Seven Lakes Drive as I was driving north.
    Just curious, when do you plan on hiking the entire Long Path Trail? I would love to see a video of that. There are some fantastic views along that trail through Rockland county.

      That must have been awesome to see that. I'm not entirely sure when I'm going to be able to get the time off to hike the whole thing but my plan is to do it within the next year or so. Having a full-time job gets in the way sometimes, LOL! It may come down to me just saying screw it and going for it.

    Is there a shelter by Silvermine lake or is camping by that water source designated?

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      You would be correct and I have since broken down that site so no one uses it. That was a site I found years ago and used it a couple of times when my mileage for the day landed me at Silver Mine Lake. I have since adjusted my hikes so that I don't need to stop there and can camp legally.

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      ...and I didn't even answer your questions, LOL. Camping by the water in that spot isn't designated but there is no disc there either. There is a shelter nearby if you continue past the lake.

      Ok, good to know.

      I was just about to ask about the "stealth camping". It seems common place in Harriman and I was wondering if I was the only one following the rules...lol (not judging). Has anyone ever made an "issue" about your choice of sites? I've never seen any Rangers or other authority figures in the woods up there.

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  3 роки тому

      @@campchairchris It is definitely common place. I've been hiking and camping there for the last 25 years and fairly often I see someone tucked away off-trail at a camp. The majority of the sites I've found bushwhacking were pretty hardened and had been there a long time. The official stance on camping is to do it at a lean-to or within 300' of it if you want to pitch a tent or hang a hammock. Anything else is considered illegal.
      There is enforcement, and I have seen Rangers on the trails before, but I have never had a situation where I had to pack up and move and I've never received a ticket. I've heard stories of it happening to people but could count on one hand the number of them. 300' from a lean-to isn't terrible, I've done it quite a bit and the stories you hear around the fire are pretty funny sometimes. The Silver Mine Lake site in this video though, I used it maybe 4 times in the last 5 years and never felt comfortable there. I always expected a Ranger to show up when I was there.
      I'm glad I broke it down, that one was in a very bad spot.
