  • In this video, we take an overnight fall backpacking trip to Harriman State Park in New York and stay at the Big Hill Shelter, which is only about 2 miles from trailhead and offers an amazing view of New York City. We started at the Harriman parking area on Kanawauke Road, then went past the abandoned mansion and fire tower to Big Hill Shelter. Once there, we continued on via the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail and did a big loop on the Tuxedo Mountain-Ivy trail, then hopped back onto the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail past two reservoirs and back to Big Hill. The total mileage during our Harriman trip was approximately 9 miles and 1,398 ft. of elevation.

Thank you for sharing wonderful hiking and camping footage. Big Hill Shelter is my go-to camping place in Harriman State Park as Old Turnpike is the easy trail course to carry the heavy weighted backpack all the way. It is great to find a fellow hiker and UA-camr sharing the same passion. Oh BTW, I like the old fashioned way using paper map but try Avenza app if you didn't try yet.

If you backcountry camp, it's free year-round. I think there are some cabins in Harriman that you can reserve, but not sure the cost of those. And many backcountry campsites have fire pits and are in pretty great shape, so would definitely recommend that for a solid free option!

I stumbled across your videos looking for hiking in Harriman State Park. Thank you for all the good information. I think i have my next hike (June), although it looks like a great place for a late fall hike as well. You present yourself really well and it's easy to feel like I'm going along on the hike with friends. The dogs are very cute. Was the small one just a puppy, or a miniature (or both)? Heh - you need to get them little doggie backpacks so they can carry their own stuff. As far as food, I've pre-cooked steak and veggies and put scrambled eggs in a little plastic bottle and frozen it all the night before for my dinner the first evening and breakfast the next day. I've also found dehydrated soups or ready-to-eat soups at different stores for like $2.00 each. I hope you continue making videos! God bless!
