Ray also was the inventor and builder of the famous EchosSonic amplifiers that Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, Merle Travis, Grady Martin and other of the 50s top pickers used. They were 30 Watt chassis combo amps, that had an EchoPlex built into the bottom of the cabinet... Total kool. In about early 1955, Elvis even bought one to sing through at their live gigs. He had quickly figured out that if he sang through Scotty's amp, he could replicate the slap sound he was getting at Sun. It's sad to think that Cairo, Illinois ended up a virtual Ghost Town and Ray, after making so many great contributions to music, passed in near obscurity without people knowing more about him and his incredible works... R.I.P. Mr. Ray Butts
"Who is Ray Butts?" He is the guy who first brought the *humbucking* pickup (the Filtertron) to the market. In the rush to get the Filtertron into Chet's guitar, Butts and Gretsch didn't file for a patent. About a year later, Seth Lover and Gibson filed for their patent on their double-coil pickup. But it was the Filtertron that started the trend toward humbucking pickups. R.I.P., Mr. Butts. Not even Reverb gives you the props you deserve.
Thought exactly the same thing. Felt strongly like they went out of their way not to say it was the first humbucking pickup developed for more or less mass-production. Maybe trying not to piss off their good buddies over at Gibson? Oh, and Reverb's the last place I'd go to see folks given what they deserve.
It’s an ok review, but why the feck do you keep engaging the tone switch when you go to the neck pickup? That darkens the sound, and I can’t hear what the pickup naturally sounds like. Looks as though you don’t know your way around a Gretsch setup.
Joe Sasser He also said something about the tone control being in reverse, touching the neck pup volume. You’d think reviewers would do just a minimum of research before making a video. Apparently not...
Did you do the swap, and does the Butts pickup offer a touch more treble and/or clarity? I'm wondering if it will offer me that benefit in place of a TVJ Classic.
Funny how I keep on revisiting Ray Butts filtertrons videos over and over again... I think Mr. Jones nailed it with ´em... I´m totally certain no pickup potting here goes a long way to acoustically gettin´ a verrry organic sound ... for sure they´ll be a pain in the ass w/hi gain levels and a noisy rockin´smitten kitten band but... could you imagine Elizabeth Cotten´s "Freight Train" on a non-Bigsby Gretsch Falcon recorded with such pickups??
Great playing and tones, but I don't think you don't understand what the switches / knobs do - and this is supposed to be about the pickup. You'd demo it better by spending more time up front showing the sound wide-open, without the tone circuit engaged - then spend a little time at the end showing where you can take that tone.
The Ray Butts Filtertron is the closest modern pickup to sound like the original pickups, while the Blacktops are usually used in the cheaper Gretsch guitars and are based on Baldwin-era pickups
Blacktops... are licensed made in Asia copies of the Filterton. Usually found on the Chinese and Korean made Gretsch models (2 and 5 series). The TV Jones are made in the USA and are much better sounding. Switched my 5240T Blacktops to TV Jones Setzers, the difference is outstanding. If you do swap, the pots and wiring will have to be done as well, the Blacktops come with 250K pots where the Filtertrons (Jones line) will require 500K for best results. WELL worth the money.
Boy, that fella sure can play, but I could not tell what pickup configuration was being played... ever. Why...? ! ! Why did he do that? Look - see, I don't know which switch was what on that feller's fancy guitar.
Really don't hear the difference so why would you wanna change the spec from factory just update the coupon guitars with diff pick ups they already do this ? They were the original 50s pick ups and most cheaper electromatics already have em on ...🕵️👍🏴🥃
why is it that every damned guitar or pickup review has some that has to reach for the dirty channel or dime the preamp . we all know its because they cant play clean. but to hear what a pickup can do you need to hear its clean tone, which is what these were made for. get your head out of the 70s, i was there it sucked.

This is by far the best product review I've seen up to present day. Well done.
Yeah, Ill be putting a set of those in my black falcon...great demo guys!
Yeah, think I'll put thee on my Silver Falcon. They sound great.
Ahh Rhett, but you didn’t, you went with Lollars, didn’t you?

@@keithclark486 Yeah sure, he left a comment and waited 3 years to change his pickups to get more views. /s
You might want to work on your cynicism...
That just sounds freaking great, playing and tone.

Thank you for the demo. Great vintage sound you're getting with the Ray Butts pickups.
Great review of the infamous Gretsch mud switch
DUDE! You are one hell of a player. Really like your note choices when you were wailling away in "A"! I heard me some James Patrick Page!
Great player. Love his album too. Thank you.
Gorgeous tone!
This was such a helpful demo. Much different than the other ones I have seen for these pickups.
Great demo. Thanks

So annoying!
Killer Demo! Thanks guys!
Sounds amazing!
@2:17 Who let "very hum-cancelling as well" make it into this clip?
I placed the Ray Butts pu's in a homemade Telecaster Cabronita. Sound AMAZING!
Great playing!
I'll be dropping a set a those in my Fender/Gretsch era MIJ "Brian Setzer" 6120, which already is a nice instrument.

@@montag4516 I have to be honest, I never did do the swap. I was very happy with the TV Jones Filter Trons and didn't want to mess with perfection.
Great demo. Those sound great!
that's some pretty great playing.
Filtertrons sound so cool
Great video, love the pickups!
where did you get guitars dude because they are siiick
Will this Pair well with a Electromatic jet? I want the original Filter’Tron tone but I know the brightness is tamed by the hollow body

What's the song at 1:11??? It's killing me. I know it...why can't I place it?
Great demo, thanks!
3:31 what's the song??
No butts about that sounds sweeet!
Awesome. Thanks!

Will these go into a Les Paul?
Whats the recording chain, boys and girls?
I see these in my future..

How do these differ from, say, Blacktop Filter’trons?
Yes. Someone please answer this. Would love to know!

what happened to the missing pup mount screw on the rear pup?
Nice playing.
Please write riffs in the description!
Awesome dirty.
This would be a better demo if the guy knew how the controls for tone and volume work on the Gretsch.
The music is good.
Reverb on reverb. who would've thought?
TV Jones could not have cracked the code by himself. He must have been handed the secret recipe directly from Ray Butt's grave.
@@fibonacho yes, I have since seen it. Thankyou.
I don't think this guy understands the mud switch.

in second grade i was suspended just for saying the ray butts name.

I don’t think these will fit on a modern 6117. I have a vintage 6117, and they are fantastic
Cant stand all that reverb but love the bell like sounds
it should be called Butts-tatron or Buttsbucker
Bobby G p90butts, or humbuttser
ITS SHOULD BE CALLED THE BUTTA-TRON OR THE BUTTS-BUCKER
Butt-bucker? Dammit, now I might need to get Classics. LOL
It should be called Butts Pickup, not filtetron
And I wonder what they're going to cost it's just one big wrought

Now why would an accomplished player like this use that sloppy annoying habit of avoiding using all four of his fingers. Drives me crazy.
I'd add a little reverb if I were you sounds abit dry don'cha think?
