Passion for your job can be great. But when that love for your work is used to compensate for low pay or poor conditions, that's a problem. A job is, after all, a means to earn a living.
A 2020 American Psychological Association meta-analysis found that employers think that poor worker treatment is ok if the workers are passionate about what they do.
Roles in the arts, education, the charity sector and healthcare often rely on this passion to make up for poor pay and toxic work environments. As Simone Stolzoff, writing in The New York Times, puts it, these industries and others like them are relying on the strength of their brand "to distract from the reality of workers' experiences". Relying on passion to make up for poor pay and conditions can also mean that people from poorer backgrounds are excluded from certain industries.
In these jobs, it might be hard for some people to see the problems. For someone who sees their job as part of their identity and has dedicated years to getting and keeping their job, it can be harder to face up to a toxic reality, Erin A. Cech, associate professor of sociology at the University of Michigan, and author of The Trouble With Passion, told the BBC. It can be harder still to quit, or to handle a job loss. While for others who feel they're lucky to have a job, they can be reluctant to report wrongdoing, for fear of losing their role, writes Stolzoff.

Do what you love - and you’d never have to work a day in your life… bottom line, whatever job you have -doctor or not- that doesn’t give you enough satisfaction and joy, manage it in the meantime but start venturing out into your main career ✌️
