Things I Stopped Buying During My Vanlife Era

  • I was surprised that I didn’t miss any of the things I stopped buying and accumulating when I started vanlife. I realized how much of my spending had been totally mindless and unnecessary, which is why I made this video to share ways that YOU can be more intentional with your spending as well (even if you don’t plan on living in a van any time soon). So let’s get into it!
    __________
    **BOOKS I RECOMMEND 📚**
I Will Teach You to Be Rich (hilarious how-to book on personal finance for millennials)
    amzn.to/2VbJ1Pt
The Little Book of Common Sense Investing (Jack Bogle's classic advice on index funds)
    amzn.to/32ewzjj
InvestED (step-by-step, millennial-friendly advice on how to pick stocks like Warren Buffett)
    amzn.to/2SLTYpn
Unshakeable (this book = courage. blast ALL the fears & misconceptions you have about investing)
    amzn.to/2SKyklt
Rich Dad Poor Dad (#1 selling personal finance book of all time... need I say more?)
    amzn.to/2SJ6vtx
Think and Grow Rich (the ultimate book on money mindset and wealth consciousness)
    amzn.to/37N2adc
    ________
    **MY FAVORITE MONEY TOOLS 🖤**
YNAB (I literally can't live without this budgeting app, so obsessed)
    www.youneedabudget.com/?ref=Y...
Wise (like Venmo but for international currencies - I use this app a LOT for my life in Mexico)
    wise.prf.hn/l/413jE0q
Ledger Nano S (crypto storage hardware wallet, because "Not Your Keys, Not Your Crypto"!):

also love books, particularly audiobooks, and speaking of paying for Audible, there are SO many free audiobooks available from libraries, don't even need to be living near one for an account. Then you can speed them up too and for me, it's SO much more efficient than reading the normal way. I'll never go back. Congrats on downsizing! Did so myself, as well as vanlife, and it was amazing. Cheers!

I notice that either through necessity, wisdom, or willingness to change, a lot of us realize we really don't need that much to function and realize happiness isn't had through buying stuff. I got off the hamster wheel about five years ago, I live debt free, and make my own happiness. I found it liberating not chasing the next this or that, the next happy whatever is never right around the corner. Good for you Rose, I respect your honest and authentic living. All the best.

People become hoarders because they mindless accumulate, hold onto things, fill mental void or distress with objects. Living in a stick and brick is easy to buy multiples and variety in every subject area. I constantly review my purchases (have photos for every purchase except grocery) to evaluate if they can stay or go. In 30 days (return period) I can pretty much decide. This cuts fantasy purchase way down.

I make a cleaning spray with vinegar, essential oils and water. It cleans everything! I used to get fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s cause it is cheaper but cut it out entirely. I use the laundry sheets as well, instead of using bleach I put that same vinegar and baking powder in the wash. Meal planning is everything especially checking the fridge before shopping saves a ton. Thanks Rose this was very useful! 🌹

Thanks for this video, I got much from it
I go through my apartment every three months or so, If I come across anything I haven't used in those 3 months I sell it or give it away. Clutter in my space ends up cluttering my mind which leads to wrong priorities.

Echoing Rose's thought, I minimalized in the past year and it's been incredibly enlightening. I sold my house and gave up everything I couldn't fit in my car. I struggled for a period without my "possessions" but found a relaxed new lifestyle. It makes you consider consumption in a whole new way.

This video is packed with great tips for many things. I love that you're living the life that you want. So many people are fearful of change or doing something different. I completely agree with you about the self help books. That's such a great point. If you trust in yourself, you'll come up with the answers yourself. I think we also expect too much of ourselves. We expect to be perfect and always make the right choices. We look at other people and assume they have their stuff together, but they're just as lost as we are, sometimes.

I really needed this right now! I used to not care at all what people thought about me, but when I turned 25 a couple years ago I started getting into beauty products after building up some savings and it's done nothing but make me self conscious! My boyfriend always tells me I'm beautiful without all that effort, but the compliments were making it so tempting to keep it up. Im cutting back to the basics now and focusing on being happy by filling my life with great memories. You are beautiful and don't need all that clutter to have a wonderful life. Thank you for the inspiration!

Wow! Rose, you have made quite a transition. What a change, I’m so amazed at you. Very impressed at this massive transformation. I wonder what your parents and close friends thought? At the end of the day it doesn’t matter. It is your life, although our parents oftentimes do have a way of being impactful! Even though we are adults.
Lastly, although it did not save me even a dime. Uggg! I purchased a live on small yacht. It too caused me, to get a rid of tons of clothes, shoes, and many extras. “Minimalism.” In hindsight, a van might have been more economical. Thanks for the share. Very cool!

Thank you Rose for sharing your insights. I think that you are absolutely correct. We are all bombarded with images and advertisements that imply that we are not good enough and we would be perfect if and when we do this or that. But in reality, we do not NEED all of these things that we want. There is nothing wrong with wanting things; but wanting what you want is very different than wanting what you need. Your closing was so spot on as well. We all can be happier if we can appreciate the things that we do have.
I'm happy for you that you have taken that road to self discovery and awareness. No matter how many people tell you how smart or pretty you are you'll never be happy until you can say it to yourself.
Thank you so much for sharing your journeys with us. I appreciate all you do. And once again, it is great to have you back posting again. i, for one, missed you here.

I havent realised that ive adopted alot of these tips! I cut off all my relaxed hair and went natural simply because i wanted to cut expense and i buy the cheapest curly moituriser and dont really spend much time on it. My make up is suncreen! And i threw away alot of clothes when i was losing weight and i bought essentials good quality capsule clothes, 3 pair of shoes and accosories only in beige or white or yellow (my chosen colour palette for everything to match). Funny part is that people are complimenting me more than in my natural hair, easy comfy mix and match clothes and bare face than ever before. Theyre always surprised when i tell them i spend around 20mins in the morning to get ready lol. no longer buy sales ever sinced i learned sale prices are inflated and are not really discounted.

A normal person can achieve this (not necessarily moving into a van but) by moving into a bedroom rental. We've maybe done this as a college student but doing this as an adult made me realize how much, or how little, I really NEED to get through life. I'm in a rooming house with two housemates and we each rent our own bedrooms while sharing common areas (kitchen, living room, hall closets, etc. - you can rent bedrooms with en suite baths or I recommend no more than two bedroom shares per full bath).
I decided to get involved in a rooming house (lodge situation) cuz I wanted to experience it for my future growth. At some point, I think I'll travel cross country using a mobile tiny house situation. Also, with my house hacking real estate investing path, I'm open to two prong strategy (1. is buying typical duplexes, triplexes & quads using residential mortgages and 2. buying Single Fam houses (only 2:1 ratio of BRs:Baths or 1:1) and using the rooming houses method.

I switched to the Kindle app for my book reading and if there's a particular book I'm interested in, I wait patiently till it's priced below $5 since they're always deals.

      1. Underwear - Nobody can see it anyway.
      2. Food - Most trash bins contain plenty of wasted food available for the taking.
      3. Shoes - You can easily make your own leather moccasins out of the carcass of a cat, racoon, or opossum. Maybe even a rabbit if you're petite enough.

Sigh. Even you had to go and dump on some vague notion of capitalism that's only in the mind of those who don't understand what it means.
Capitalism makes no prescription regarding what you should or shouldn't buy. Consumerism is a result of 1) validation seeking behavior and 2) subsidization of bad purchases.
Under capitalism you pay the full cost of your bad decisions and get the full benefit of your good decisions.

@@ruckanitepreacher5618 I imagine there's a sense of challenge, fun, and freedom. It's also far cheaper, and wanting to have more money is pretty easy to understand. I don't know that I'd necessarily want to live in a van, but an RV? Hell yeah.

@@cherries2268 I just listened to the video, and you're misrepresenting it. Here's what she actually said:
_In my 20s, I would go into expensive stores even though I was too broke to buy anything, and just walk around, just to get comfortable with that level of luxury. You know how high-end designer stores are like just different from discount stores? [...] You can just feel the quality and the luxury. I know it sounds silly, and I feel a little weird for sharing this, but this kind of thing really helped. So when I was little, my mom would talk all the time about how we couldn't afford things, and every time we went shopping, we would only shop from the clearance racks. [...] As a child, that imprints a certain message on you: "People like us only deserve stuff like this." These subconscious beliefs are so, so subtle, but they permeate every aspect of your being._
She was talking about how she had to get over a poverty mindset by exposing herself to luxury. She was talking about her past trauma, NOT her present desire to live a luxurious life.
I swear, it's like people just hear what they want to hear instead of actually listening to what people are actually saying.
