  • Welcome to our first "Initial Thoughts" where we are checking out the Dad Bod by Justin Ternes Surfboards in Dark Arts Construction.
    The Dad Bod I'm riding is 5'5 x 20 x 2 5/8 = 31L
    Have you heard of Justin Ternes or Dark Arts before?
    I feel like I couldn't look to far without seeing a board carbon wrapped by Justin/Dark Arts - just lately Kanoa Igarashi was riding one in the pool at Rumble at the Ranch, The Florence brothers (John John and Nathan), seem to be all over them in their Pyzel models, Spencer Sterling has been riding a few lately, Koa Smith... The list goes on!
    JUSTIN TERNES | FOUNDER OF DARK ARTS
    Dark Arts is a budding channel within the surf industry that collaborates with prominent surfboard shapers from around the world. Inspired by innovation and quality, we’ve re-thought the process of crafting surfboards. As a result, we offer the lightest, strongest, best performing models on the market.
    Dark Arts began in 2019, founded by veteran board builder and surfing purist, Justin Ternes. After a twenty-one year quest, Justin answers the question, “What is the perfect surfboard, and how is it made?” Dark Arts creates unrivaled boards, led by the conviction that surfboards should preserve and enhance the essence of surfing.
    Unlike traditional surfboards, our boards last a lifetime. Assembled in our hometown of San Diego, these American made products are shaped by world-class shapers then glassed with a refined carbon-fiber vacuum bagging technique, utilizing best environmental practices.
    Our history of searching culminates in a brand we are proud to offer surfing enthusiasts of all calibers. Dark Arts is reinventing the way surfboards are made and perform so that the board you ride today is the board you ride tomorrow.
    The Dad Bod:
    The DadBod is a condensed shortboard design based off of a design JT shaped in early 2000. This board is wider and thicker but has contemporary shortboard rails. Flatter entry rocker, double to single concave, and a wide tail help the DadBod excel in knee to head high waves, soft or punchy. One of our most versatile models considering its range. Ridden 4-6 inches smaller than your average shortboard, allows it to fit in tight places on a wave, while the extra float helps for engineering speed and enhancing paddle power.
    The Dad Bod helps maintain fun in less than ideal conditions while still being progressive in decent waves. A favorite of JT team rider Kyle Knox, who named the board for its diversity. It has become one of his mainstays for small to medium size days. The DadBod is always there for a good time!
    Great board for Beginner / Intermediate level surfers to take it to the next level and Advanced level surfers to maximize fun. The DadBod is made as a thruster, but all Dark Arts surfboards are customizable. The DadBod, combined with the Dark Arts vacuumed carbon attributes, flex-back, durability, and supreme weight, make this model a sure shot!
    If you have any questions please let us know, and the board is equipped with Futures - so any fins you think we should be checking out, please let us know!

    Hey mate, good idea with the initial thoughts! That board looks like a lot of fun. I'd be interested to see how it goes with a twin + trailer fin setup. I think you'd need the trailer as it's not designed to be a twin but could combine well for that small wave, fast and loose feel.

      Hey! I thought of the twin + 1, but it’s so loose and maneuverable that I don’t think it needs it... but we’ll see how we go! ✌️

    looks like a great board, I'm interested to know your body weight to the volume of the board (31litres). I personally enjoy a shorter board, but struggle to find a short board that provides the paddle power ito my weight. I therefore tend to choose larger length boards to make up the volume, but I find those boards "to big" ito length and more difficult to turn sharply. I was quite surprised to see how easy you paddle into the waves and the maneuverability on the board that is 5 inches shorter than your height. I'm an intermediate surfer and usually surf in less than ideal 1-3 ft conditions. Thank you!

      Hey mate!
      I'm around 92kgs - but have always ridden quite low volume for my weight.
      This is a great board, so capable, nad really packs a bit of punch!

    looks mental! few questions.. 1. Can we get them in Oz ? 2. How does it paddle? like you said its a unusual combo to have a shorter board with more rocker.. does the fact that its wide and quite bouyant offset the rocker in terms of paddle power? 3. Whats the advantage of carbon wrapping and whats the weight compared with normal Pu or EPS tech. looks like a nightmare for the wax and probably warps if you leave it in the sun? guessing its extremely ding proof?

      Hey mate!
      Let me give this response a crack:
      1. Not sure - hit up Dark Arts on IG, but I know he sent surfboard empire some carbon wrapped Pyzels recently!
      2. Paddles well - rocker doesn’t come into it too much when paddling and it paddles well!
      3. So far it feels really lively, and it’s really light.
      Feels fairly durable through the deck etc.
      I try not to leave any boards in the sun, it really isn’t good for them! 😂

    Did he send it you in Australia? was shipping expensive?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  3 роки тому

      Yeah - it got bunched in with a few other boards, but i think it can be quite expensive.
      If you're interested, maybe hit me up on Instagram and I can see if a few people are keen and we can see if a batch ship would be cheaper! Justin's boards are epic, and i'm keen to try and get people onto them over here!

      @@TheSurfboardGuide thank you!
      separately as a bigger surfer (same as myself) would you say to always go more thick and wide at your height or go more traditional dims for shortboard shape?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  3 роки тому

      ConstantJive hey!
      I tend to go shorter and wider - I’m only 5’10.5, so you can sometimes end up on really long boards to get your volume if you don’t custom them a little!
