Note in the video around the 10:00 mark- her fire chief can't even make sure their smoke alarms are properly mounted? Top right, it's hanging by the wiring.
she was a joke....melton opened the door behind her while she was talking!!! she said in so many words, "he encroached on our egos, who does he think he is"
" I'm going to be the only one who rescues people... Even if that means people have to die" ... Yeah... We got that..Don't interfere with "you" getting the credit. Fire the Bozo Asst Chief.. there are easily more service minded and capable slot holders.
The fire cheif that caused this whole situation literally opens the door at 9:40. He was absolutely available to comment on his own actions, but the city was too afraid of any form of actual blowback. Such cowards
I bet he is not only a coward, but also an aggressor. Given he is actually in the same building when she was doing that video interview, I wouldn't be surprised if he threaten her if she doesn't back him up.
Correct. Totally agree. She's trying to say only the government has the right to allow you into a disaster area when you're trying to save people and then when asked well did he receive any additional training cuz you guys were asking him back instead of saying we made a mistake. We should have just had him log in as help. She tries to say no he was in the wrong she needs to go
That's no fire chief. I am a retired South African Chief Fire Officer and I can honestly say that this is a pure case of ego, based on jurisdictional jealousy. "How dare you rescue someone in such a flamboyant manner while we don't have helicopter resources of our own?" Instead of threatening the pilot, I would have welcomed him and provided all the support, including fuel, to assist in gaining an aerial overview of the disaster area, and assisting in rescues where possible. What a disgrace to the firefighting profession. And shame on the town officials for trying to excuse this behaviour.
@@nickgreen7312 I wouldn't say all but there's certainly more than a few. I have family who are firefighters and they're some of the most down to Earth people I know. The higher up the ladder you go, the worse the ego gets. The same goes for the police department.

"We'd rather have people die waiting for official help than see them rescued without our permission." - Lake Lure Town Manager Olivia Stewman (paraphrased)
Yep, sick part is the reasoning is probably tied to funding. Possible funding is proportionate to the amount of rescues so they didn't want another entity. This is not uncommon in the public sector (schools, fire depts, police depts) and its unfortunate that money is ranked higher than the duties of the department.
"Sir! Sir! You can't do that! You need a license to render aid to people in distress. You need to apply for a $40 provisional rescue permit at least 4 -8 weeks ahead of time from the South Carolina Office of Internal safety Measures. The permit must be renewed every 3 months and cannot be used out of state, and you must have at least 2 forms of I.D. proving you are a South Carolina resident and are certified in CPR. Sir! Sir! This is for everyone's saftey! Failure to provide a permit while rendering aid warrants a minimum fine of $500 and/or 6 months in county jail. Sir! Sir!"
Yup, they can’t manage their way out of a paper sack. The FAA should be put on the carpet for their overreach. Helicopters are expensive to own and maintain and you have a private citizen that is willing to spend their own money to help people and you mistreat them. These people know no shame and should be shown the door.

Twenty-five plus years on the job as a Deputy Sheriff I will say this in the context of a natural disaster... I didn't realize "regular citizens" couldn't save lives. I didn't know a person needed "authorization" to save a life. I didn't know a person needed to provide "advanced notification" in order to save a life. This girl doesn't belong in any type of position of authority. She's more concerned about her own department than she is about those who were in danger. If in fact they needed to 'coordinate', then fine. Take down pilot's info. Tell him who to notify. Give him a flight plan or whatever he needed. Rather than an arrest threat
Anyone notice ASST CHIEF CRAPPISTACHE popped his head in mid interview? You suppose he was there to fix the smoke detector dangling by its wires… ? Jerk
This assistant fire chief wanted to be the hero that day. He knew he had a chance at it and wasn't about to let anyone else steal his thunder. As a result, he let his GIANT EGO get in the way of actually becoming one. He's done at this job and most likely with any command job at any other department. As a public servant ego has zero place in the chain of command. Unfortunately for him, and more importantly, his own family, he's going to find that out, factually, the hard way. Good luck to him in his future endeavors.
I suspect that most of the civilian chopper pilots where either former military, or law enforcement. That Ass of a fire chief needs to be told, he does not have the authority to do what he did. Only the FAA can close air space.

The reporter should have asked if it was safer to drag the man through a river flowing with debris like the "officials" did instead of a ride in a helicopter that the man's wife already "survived."
My thought is that it took three days for them to allow citizens to help with the rescue and after that the private owners rescued 200 people and delivered a lot of supplies. So either way the fire chief and city official failed the stranded people

It’s very obvious it was an ego trip because he just could have said “Thank you for brining her in. Hey we need you to just coordinate with us when you go out again.”
It's refreshing to see a reporter actually asking pointed questions and holding the government's feet to the fire rather than just blindly accepting their talking points as "facts". Well done.
Once they deflected questions to her, they were already in damage control. She's obviously the one with media training, and her main priority at that point was to admit no fault and not say anything that could lead to the city getting sued. Unfortunately for her, media actually did it's job for once, and this is too big to just smooth over with bureaucratic manager/legal speak. The fire cheif should definitely lose his job. Put ego and jurisdictional p!ssing match in front of the task at hand. The correct answer was obviously to jump at the chance to have a volunteer asset like that and incorporate him into the SAR mission.
It's systemic, firing them is irrelevant. Structure fires are a thing of the past, due to modern technology and regulations. Despite this, the ranks of firefighters have swollen nationally. They're no longer there to protect you. They're backup for the militarized police. They're trained to protect the elite. And apparently, as in Lahaina and now Helene, they're trained to prevent the saving of lives.
If that “manager” was stuck up in that mountain for two days with just a bottle of water & a bag of chips, would SHE have insisted on an OFFICIAL rescue only?
Absolutely. This is disgusting. I understand the risks that may be possible when not left to "the professionals," but this is a life or death situation.
One thing to consider: the reason the officials require verification of training is because if they don’t they will have serious liability if someone is killed by a rescuer who doesn’t know what they are doing. So to everyone who thinks that anyone should be allowed to participate, what you should push for is a law shielding the county from liability in that situation. Then they will allow untrained people to help. But if that happens and one of your family members is killed during a rescue and you are told you can’t sue, you probably won’t be very happy…and you will be blaming those same officials for incompetence and saying “how could they let unqualified people rescue my family. “ just something to consider.

Hmmm...coincidental that his wife is the one with the power to approve the federal mining rights? Meanwhile his stick will go up substantially when approved. The loss of life for money. Sounds like whoever was Incident Commander of the incident got their britches in a knot. I get it, incidents like this have a lot of moving parts and you need to make sure you're making the best use of your resources possible while also making sure that all the work being done is being done safely. It's impossible to do that when you have randos flying in and out of the incident area, potentially complicating or getting in the way of operations already underway. The best course of action for the pilot would have been to check in at the command post FIRST, with the Incident Command, volunteer his time/skills/machine, and then explain the situation. Very likely if he had done that, the IC would have gave him the go ahead for the rescue. You can't just jump in to an active incident without checking in with command first. This is basic ICS.
As a professional pilot, it always behooves me how these public servants we call first responders think they have authority over the FAA, aircraft and airspace! Nothing this man did was illegal. Let’s see… a 3 minute helicopter ride versus dragging a man across a raging river with a rope. Who’s putting who in danger again?
But that would deny the FD the chance to get front page kudos and a chance to use their toys.
And who else really, is going in to help.....everything i hear is all help re getting to remote people.....is all civilian....every single bit. some just learned how to bypass FEMA to get mass supplies to different areas, chainsaws (who needs fema to run chainsaws when tens of thousands know how to use), food, water, every level of support.

Guarantee the town or whatever has a lot to say to the manager and ass-chief. Best said with switching them out for people with common sense.

Yep, sick part is the reasoning is probably tied to funding. Possible funding is proportionate to the amount of rescues so they didn't want another entity. This is not uncommon in the public sector (schools, fire depts, police depts) and its unfortunate that money is ranked higher than the duties of the department.

It's refreshing to see a reporter actually asking pointed questions and holding the government's feet to the fire rather than just blindly accepting their talking points as "facts". Well done.
he is white and probably a republican, they always hold their feet to the fire fool
maybe if they had done this for the past 60 years this nation wouldnt be such a third world sh!t hole
That’s because it’s local government. They don’t have much power to intimidate like the feds.

Citizens need to make sure the City Manager & Fire Chief are fired.
Not to mention sued.
Have to keep the heat on
Once they deflected questions to her, they were already in damage control.
And apparently, as in Lahaina and now Helene, they're trained to prevent the saving of lives.
they need a raise and the citizen should be jailed
If that “manager” was stuck up in that mountain for two days with just a bottle of water & a bag of chips, would SHE have insisted on an OFFICIAL rescue only?
I was thinking the same. Things would be soo different if they or their family were in danger.
Oh, she would have DEMANDED to be the first one rescued
@@jjazman1234 understood, but the guy a veteran everything, pilot, firefighter, alot of other things....and he did coordinate with flight paths locally - pilots do know how to do that. I'm glad they showed the guys name and picture. The city hall and manager should be ashamed to make excuses instead of apologizing for making the rescue efforts less effective by not allowing the assistance

@@dasse8717I really hate to tell you, but you need to read the news not just in the United States but across the world if you think that these events only occur in southern regions of the United States or in the United States in general. There are so many issues that should never happen, which happen on a daily basis, and you would think brings shame to people involved who claimed to be rescuers or firefighters or medics but only care about themselves and their egos. It's extremely common everywhere, in every country, in every location. I wish it really was confined just one area, so we could focus our efforts on what the problem is with certain areas, but look at the lawsuits and the court cases occurring all over the United States in general. Look at the state of Public Safety in another place where I volunteer, Guatemala City, Guatemala. Yes, how long does it take to FIGURE OUT that someone is helping when help is needed. Seems Melton needs to go back to kindergarten, along with all City of Lake Lure officials. Maybe they're afraid of lawyers. Pilot could have sued the Sh** out of them if he had got arrested.
This is how we were treated during COVID, wasn't it? don't get a jab...you can't come into the store. To stop spread of infection, stay locked in your homes even if you're suicidal. We don't care if you die unless you're in a hospital with covid and the hospital can collect money for each covid patient. Don't have covid when you get to the hospital? We'll make sure you're go out of the hospital WITH covid in a body bag so we can collect money. This is about money regardless of people's lives once again. I'm sure the fire dept gets paid for each rescue and they probably want to make those federal funds.

The fact that this man's hand isn't already on a mission to find itself across the face of that firefighter shows how strong of a will he has more than most.
Fun fact... the city manager, assistant fire chief and emergency management people cannot tell a private pilot to not fly or be subject to arrest. The FAA at the request of local authorities can issue a Temporary Flight Restriction. I think the assistant fire chief committed a crime.
I LOVE this comment! Very interesting indeed.
How about the fact he isn't doing anything but hiding in the building while the real men and women are out putting it on the line to rescue those that need help
Unfortunately, some ignorant cop would probably arrest the pilot and sort it out later.

During hurricane Harvey when our neighborhood flooded, in the middle of the night, like 3AM, we heard those swamp/fan boats going down our streets, rescuing people. Turns out it was the "Cajun Navy," volunteers from Louisiana who drove hundreds of miles in the middle of the night to save people in Houston. Thank God for them. They had capabilities that our local government did not have. The Cajun Navy didn't ask anyone for permission; they just drove up on the main street of our neighborhood and started rescuing people.
Cajun Navy is a term I never heard of. Absolutely love it!! Also, my husband worked for FEMA evaluating the damage to homes during Katrina and Wilma. He said Cajuns are some of the best people you want to meet.

I live just north of Houston and yes I remember we were all under water, it was a blessing to see the men from Louisiana with those big airboats going up and down those highways ,my son in law was a Houston Fireman , everyone worked together and glad to have help where ever they could find it, thank God for people with a good heart that will help his or her fellow brothers and sisters, that’s what life should be , no one should be doing it for recognition! People like this need to removed of positions of authority. Shameful.
Let's start with Kamala. It is her husband who has his hands dirty with Black Rock which funds Albemarle who asked for federal and state mining rights to the land just 3 days before this castrophe. Hmmm...coincidental that his wife is the one with the power to approve the federal mining rights? Meanwhile his stick will go up substantially when approved. The loss of life for money. Makes you sick.
Jody Barr, you did a good job of interviewing that lady city official with just the right questions. Better than our national news people do!
This is what real journalism is like. Thank You.
Imagine being on the jury for that pilot. No one would have convicted him.
You might be shocked...
@@bottomtothetop1280 I would hope that those that voted to convict never needed help from their neighbor. We definitely live in an upside-down world.
