This film opened today in my area, and I have yet to see it. However, in my youth I read "The Long Walk," the novel on which the film is based. The novel made a very strong impression on me then. I read it again as an adult, and while it was still a fun read, I questioned the veracity of it-- esp. the yeti sightings! Still, I very much want to see the film. I'm surprised that Dr. K didn't comment on how George Clooney at one time owned the film rights to the book. Good review, Drs. K & M!
I finally caught up with The Way Back. It is a good film with great acting from all the cast though Jim Struges and Saoirsa Ronan were for me the best. There were some parts that dragged in a little but overall it was a good film.
Watched this last night in Madrid - great film overall! I thought there were times when it was dragging on a bit (particularly before the desert) but then it really gripped me for the final parts.
The desert part killed it for me. Even the most untrained survivalist should be able to figure put that maybe we shouldn't be walking during the day in a desert? Especially when you can clearly see at night? There is literally no other light around other than the stars. It's easy to see. I can't believe these "real" people were that stupid. You walk at night; see the sun starting to rise, then dig a trench deep enough to hide you from the sun and go to sleep. It's not rocket science. But instead they just walk in 120 degree heat all day? 🤷♂️
@stratocaster1986able No, he actually didn't. Dostoevsky was sent to "katorga" (penal labour in Siberia) in tsarist times; precisely 1849 - 1854. GULAG was the acronym for soviet agency administrating whole gigantic system of labour camps and prisons, which become a name for this system itself. While soviet Gulag originated from katorga, it was way worse.
@agolosha I saw it yesterday: The acting was very good, and I didn't notice anything about 'faulty western perceptions'; the whole movie felt very realistic and un-Hollywood in tone. And I don't really like Enemy At The Gates either.
I walked out of this...boring and taxing to watch. From 40 mins in it is literally watching people walk around the desert. Awful. And Ed Harris usually picks his movies so well.
I came across this film, "The way back" and pressed play, I wasn't disappointed.
I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. its one of those movies you watch from 4 to 6 A.M because you found it and you want to stay up...it very enjoyable
I watched it on Prime. The final scene is a shock to the system. What a perilous, fulfilling walk it is.

Can someone tell me if he has reviewed the master yet?

You can always trust Mark Kermode. Fact!
Didn't Dostoevsky get put in a Gulag?
Is it Boring?
@808chameleon Polish. They suffered the most in II WW ,so that hardened them to the steel.
