Sorry to hear about your problem Chris. To me as a fisherman myself for over 70 years its hard to find a good fishing spot and the establishment doesnt care about the fishermen or the hunters of this country. Why cant they leave well enough alone. Hope that you and your friends find a solution.
We literally have tens of millions of acres of federally funded national forest and several state funded lakes and WMAs that you can hunt and fish on across this country. The government has public boat ramps, it does public hunts, draw hunts, it has a tackle loaner programs, it does fishing rodeos, and it has several more opportunities to get adults and children outside. Saying the government doesn’t care about the fisherman and hunters of this country isn’t true. Because without the government I would have never shot my first deer, or my first duck. I also wouldn’t have the opportunity to go in my backyard and catch fish anytime I want to because the lake wouldn’t be there. The government has done some fucked up things, but the programs and resources it has for fisherman and hunters is fucking great. The reason they’re draining this river is because people continue to move into the desert and they need drinking water. Not because they hate fisherman. It’s not that hard to understand.
I’m at a loss for words…hopefully you can get something done about it! You have made awesome content on that river and taught lots of people in the process!! Good luck

They also re routed 3 miles of the Rio Grande back into the original river channel inside the Bosque del Apache refuge along with the San Marcial project just to facilitate water to Texas.. and for the RG silvery minnow all the fish and wildlife in that stretch didn't matter to them. 😡🤬
Well that's just completely made up and untrue. I drive over that stretch of river every day. In no way has it been diverted. Part of the water from the low flow conveyance channel is diverted into the BdA, but the river is not.

Now it's nothing but a dirt bike trail. Its depressing having those childhood memories and knowing you can't pass those experiences on to the next generation.
Kris, Try contacting Leo Shang via EPF if you haven't already, I wonder if he'd make a worthwhile trip to Southern NM to help. He's a great conservationist and knows about micro species, it could be a way of potentially stopping this.
I feel some of your pain. They are draining Lake Conway in Arkansas, but are going to fill it back up in 5 years. Fished it for years and was loaded with fish. Great catfish, crappie lake. (Don't fish much for Large mouth bass but they were also in the lake.) They also said the fish will head down stream into the Arkansas River. It is almost empty and the deep spots are still holding fish
I really hope that someone can stop this madness this makes me sick the way the NM government is as I lived in Eastern and Western NM most of my life and have been a fan of muddy river catfishing for a long time praying for the big river in NM
i have recently figured out that most surfaces become lacking of water because someone or everyone retrieving water from underground, this will cause surface water diving down to fill the empty area. this conclusion is heavily depending on that no significantly changes on yearly water drop and season changes, which may cause direct changes on surface water.

I'm on the lake there in Canyon Lake too. Huge poputlation growth....every one flushing toilets and watering lawns....cupled with the thrird year of drought.... we are screwed
How is it possible to "shut off" a river? I am thinking that this must actually be an irrigation ditch. I looked on Google Maps and found "Muddy River Road", which is near a man-made irrigation ditch called the "Garfield Drain". Is that it? If the farmers served by the irrigation ditch don't have the clout to keep the water running, it's hard to imagine that anyone else could. Sorry to see your fishing spot come to an end like that.
What a shame! Hopefully something good comes out of all the decisions theme people make or if they decide to leave it alone it'll be even better 🙏 Keep up the good work!🙏🙏
