    I do love me a slick side! Got one on one of my builds.
    Agree 100% about the FA.
    The thumb forward in the depression in the carrier is a good point. The depression in the carrier also is what engages the dust cover and pops it open when the weapon is charged or when the gun is fired and the cover was closed prior to the pew.

    The dip in the bolt carrier is for the knob on the inside of the ejection port cover.
    Also, during rifle qualifications while enlisted, I would always hit the forward assist after charging a round out of habit. Never once did I experience a failure to eject.
    One more point, there may be a time where one might have to chamber a round as quietly as possible, in which case the forward assist would greatly help easing it into battery.
    Just my two cents 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The forward assist was originally designed and added to the M16-A2 as a field expedient method to shove a cartridge home (into battery) when the chamber became so carbon fouled that the cartridge would not seat on its own.
    This happened because, early on, the troops were told that cleaning and servicing the M16-A1 "was not necessary" which, of course, was rapidly determined not to be the case as weapons ceased to function, jammed and, occasionally, had cartridge failures rsulting in a number of soldiers being injured.
    To anyone not understanding the severity of a gun being that dirty...
    If it's "get the round home or die because someone is shooting at you..." then use it (forward assist). Otherwise, it's useless, unless you want to cause a possible facial reconstruction surgery in your near future.
    That's the "official" stance on the Forward Assist device.
    A dust cover was designed to keep dirt and debris from entering the chamber while in "the field" and soldiers were crawling around in dirt, sand and mud or otherwise allowing large particulate matter to enter the action/chamber of the firearm.
    A dirt-fouled action could possibly require you to use... Wait for it... Your forward assist.
    If you're not actively doing such things as operating in a severe, desert environment where sand gets in everything from your food to your nethers" or crawling around on your belly, in the bush and exposing the action to direct exposure/contact with dirt and mud,
    *Don't worry about it.*
    In a standard operating environment, such as your living room, garage, the firing range, etc., the dust cover, which opens and *stays* open the moment you chamber a round, the dust cover is only functional for sporting witty sayings like "Die commie, die!"

    • @G2niverse
      @G2niverse  2 роки тому +1

      Boomer Taylor I see it more of a liability, its just a "jam button". If your rifle is dirty, its not going to run, and hitting the jam button every time will not fix the issue. Only create more issues for failure to feed, extract and eject because you're trying to force a weapon to function that is not truly functional.

    • @MtnBadger
      @MtnBadger 2 роки тому +1

      @@G2niverse
      In case I wasn't clear, that's my whole point!
      It serves no valid function other than to jam a round into a far too dirty chamber which you would *only* want to do if someone was about to kill you unless you had that one shot.
      That's why all thr previous rifles had them and your observation that "they couldn't let go of the past" and had to have a "panic button" (as we used to call it) or they'd go into "vapor lock" was absolutely accurate. 😆
      Once the guys dead, you've got time (you sincerely hope) to clear and clean your weapon. But that's it, there is no justification for a forward assist on this rifle...
      Unless, you're a complete idiot who never cleans his rifle and you're suddenly faced with a single attacker who's about to kill you with a knife, etc. unless you risk blowing up a round in the chamber... 😆
      In all seriousness, sorry if my original comment suggests, in any way, that a forward assist is a useful item.
      Happy new year!

    I figured the forward assist put there for convenience when it comes to attempting to cycle rounds. In light of the indentation in the bolt carrier group, the FA seems like the better choice to avoid burning your thumb

    • @G2niverse
      @G2niverse  2 роки тому

      It is... however if you're forcing the rifle to feed a crappy round, what happens on the next shot? If you can't feed it with your thumb, you need to clear the issue before you end up with a big ol paperweight.

    Although that cutout is not intended for this purpose, but, yes, it may used like FA. However, if you already runed through a couple mags or more, it may to lit a cigarette from your BC, and such usage of that cutout in that way becomes impossible, unless, of course, your hands are fireproof... In that case you can't do without FA in any way...

  • @sighahnyde2215
    @sighahnyde2215 2 роки тому

    I don't think it's dumb, I think dumb people use it to clear a malfunction. That's not its purpose. If you can't tap the FA and put it into battery then it should be obvious that there is something wrong and not force it.
    If there is a malfunction, you clear it with a slap and rack. Even in sports you pull the charging handle and observe the chamber before touching the FA. Most malfunctions should be cleared after racking and checking the chamber. if it hasn't then the remedial action stops there, never force it. There are some malfunctions that the forward assist can "help" with like a worn buffer spring or brand new over sized gas rings but the fa will not solve that problem and shouldn't be thought of as a fix.
    That grove on the side of the bolt carrier is not a forward assist. It's there to give the detent on the dust cover space and let you close the dust cover. Personally, I like to keep my fingers away from either side of the barrel as much as possible not just the muzzle. As with any fire arm the ejection port is a pinch point and I don't like being pinched
    It's just preference in reality. I prefer it mainly so that I can guarantee it is in battery after performing a press check or while trouble shooting but never to clear a malfunction.

    Maybe the FA is positioned so you don't have to take your right hand off the grip to use it as you would for the bolt "dent" use. As well as you probably can get more force out of the FA at the back. However that might not be a good thing in the case of shoving dirt or a bad shaped round further into the chamber. Leading to extraction failure.

    • @G2niverse

  • @AndynBelle
    @AndynBelle 2 роки тому +1

    I do want to mention another possible need for a FA and probably the reason it’s there. You shoot a Garand much? It’s tough for the bolt to strip the first round at times and a simple push on the charging handle is all it takes to get the bolt moving and the spring does the rest. A bench rifle will never have this problem but a battle weapon in harsh conditions might. An AR with a new mag loaded to capacity and dry/dirty or cold conditions with sluggish lube might warrant a slight push to strip the first round from the mag after you hit the bolt release and nothing happens

The m16 was first touted as a self cleaning rifle, yet after massive failures in Vietnam, namely due to ammunition, and because of the internal bolt design, they came up with the m16 a1 and the forward assist to move the bolt forward and to be able at least to take the rifle apart more easily to fix the problem.

And that is in middle of a fire fight... that jammed round could mean your life! so even if the next one is a PIA. Ramming the one thats in, home, to get one last lifesaving shot off, is when its important. As Ive heard the same thing you said "Just rack another round" which this other person did but then ran into same issue. So ended up still having to bash the FA to get off that round. He felt that racking another round an hitting same issue could have been seconds too long. Now thats 2 guys out of many ive spoken with and it was in the desert both times. No one else Ive asked has had to use it. Now I could see wanting it there for your bug out rifle when shit hits the fan and not knowing what situations you would be faced with... But for a target shooting plinker there is no need for it and looks better without. But my bug out rifle has it and its just there for that 1 in a million chance I could need it. just like the bug out bag and food rations them self. As for using the BCG dimple in theory thats great.... but muscle memory and training those guys never would have thought to use the dimple in a shit storm when all the training says smash smash smash that FA.
