Actually like when they talk over each other. There is respect, but they want to execute their jobs to the best of their ability. There are no wasted words, and the editing is perfect.

I'm shocked that Silence Of The Lambs isn't on either of their lists. Not only was that one of the best movies of 1990, it was arguably the *_#1 BEST_* of the year. To some people it's one of the best movies of the entire decade. Beautifully written, amazing actors/actresses, and legit terrifying and it doesn't need the cheap jump scares that today's horror flicks need to be scary.
Roger would eventually add Silence to his "Great Movies" list in 2001.
Oddly enough they didn’t care for it very much at the time, Ebert certainly less than Siskel.

This is obe of the few times in which Gene’s list is more impressive than Roger’s

I would have loved to see these two review movies in the more recent decades….I really miss them.
Siskel and I have very differing tastes, but Hearts of Darkness is a fantastic documentary. It’s amazing how much the filming of Apocalypse Now mirrors the documentary about it!
The ads are probably one of the most interesting things in this vid
So like many people here I am going through the old clips and also checking the posts and the fims released in that year. It seems clear that most of us like things dark ( so much for love for Barton Fink LOL) but I also look back now and feel it was not a great year for films. Still some I recall with warth and a smile ( Life is Sweet) and I feel really good when I see posts mention films like Raise The Red Latern, Riff Raff, Rambling Rose . Sometimes just because you know a film such as Rambling Rose or Doc Hollywood is not a Top 10 film does not diminish the fact that it was entertaining and made you feel good. As best as I can recall I think the films that blew me away that year were Raise the Red Lantern, Life is Sweet, Riff Raff, Heart of Darkness, and Barton Fink . It is amazzing to the think that Yimou, Mike Leigh, Coens, and Ken Loach went to to direct a number of films that were even better those films. I absolutely hated Angel At My Table and also did not like some of Campion's later work ( The Piano ) but thought Power of the Dog was very good. Perhaps I need to revisit "Angel" . I may be wrong but I suspect when it comes to the Asian films back then Gene and Rodger were operating a year behind because of release dates as I commented on the 1990 that I was suprised they had not cited Joudou so as I move over to the 1992 clip I am anticipating seeing them mention Raise the Red Lantern.
So many of these films have been forgotten, The Silence of the Lambs and T2 have never been forgotten and never will so long as the movies live.
Two mediocre films are going to live forever? Yeah right.

Inarguably, both T2 and Silence of the Lambs have had a greater impact on movies and the pop cultural landscape than movies like Grand Canyon or The Man in the Moon. More than happy to entertain an argument here, but the argument goes beyond what you think of T2 or Silence.

Roger has "The Rapture" as his number 10, i love that film but no one ever seems to know it when i mention it. i really liked "Grand Canyon" as well. but for the life of me i have never understood the popularity of 'Thelma And Louise". also i still cannot believe they both disliked "Silence Of The Lambs".
Only Gene disliked it. Roger gave 3.5 out of 4 stars, a very good movie in his estimation, but his admiration for it increased over the years and he eventually added it to his Great Movies essay collection.
@newwavepop I agree that The Rapture did not receive the recognition of half of the "crap" that enjoyed more praise! It defies comprehension when intelligent films are overlooked in favor of the heavily promoted ones.

am currently revisiting both 1991 and 1996 in the order of siskel & Ebert episodes whenever possible and although it's only june my list for 1991 i think would be:

I am doing the same exercise. I like some of your choices ( City of Hope, Life is Sweet, and others) . I have to admit that I have really disliked Campion films including " Angel" and " The Piano" but loved Power of The Dog. The problem for me with " Silence" is that I just always preferred Brian Cox as Hannibal and for whatever reason it just affects my ranking ( but love Ted Levene...... in anything )
Btw, Mr Robert. I agree that Brian Cox was a truly chilling Hannibal Lector.
Unreal that "The Silence of the Lambs" didn't make either of their top 10 ten lists. Not only is it one of the best films of that year but one of the best of that decade

I still don't get how Costner didn't get an Oscar nomination. I know it's a huge ensemble cast but he doesn't get lost in it. Everything revolves around him. If anything Tommy Lee Jones didn't deserve an Oscar nomination for what amounts to 5 minutes of screentime.
When I think of JFK the movie. It’s Kevin Costner and Joe Pesci. Those 2 gave the best performances
What may have ruined Costner's chances was the heat he took from the chattering classes for his turn as an American-accented Robin Hood earlier that same year.
Come to think of it, it was a bizarre year for Costner accents: He gave Jim Garrison the heavy Alabama drawl of Forrest Gump, but the real Jim Garrison talked like Gregory Peck.
All the same, _JFK_ is full of wonderful performances. I think Donald Sutherland should have had a Supporting Actor nom.

The Rapture was , for me, an exercise in cognitive reasoning. I was quite surprised that practically everyone involved in the production of the film were of Jewish extraction. To handle this film with such a broad-minded viewpoint, made this a surprisingly effective film. The subject matter, performances, and a certain visual style, make the premise very believable. At points in all of our lives, we ponder the existence of a higher power and our meaning, if any, in this world. The fact that some taking religion to the point of fanatical insanity, is quite frightening.
@@kdohertygizbur I agree. Those would land, not in my book, of being a personal favorite. Those films and a good chunk of the others, would NOT appear on my "best of" list.

Guys gotta understand something about Siskel and Ebert. They think of films like Speedrunners think of games and literally go after the ones that make them feel great. These guys have seen thousands upon thousands of films. Think twice about misjudging their opinion. If you had told them your favorite film list, they'd vomit.

I always thought that Roger Ebert was the better film critic. I think that when he watched a movie he was better at relaxing and enjoying a movie and giving it a chance. Gene Siskel often would nit pick a film apart.
Im surprised that they both didn't have doc Hollywood on their list because they both really liked it.
Boyz in the Hood won nominations for Best Director and Screenplay but no Best Picture
That's a blot since they nominated Prince of Tides...a good movie...but no way more deserving than Boyz

Yes The Faboulus Baker Brothers is in my view the best peformance that she has given and the same for Beau Bridges with it arguably being even Jeff's best role. Really almost a perfect film . @@michaelhouser4778
John Singleton and Boyz n The Hood is really great. Gene hit it with the writing. Lauwrence Fishburne at his best. But, why didn't Singleton make another film as good? Kinda like Spike Lee, his best work was only at the beginning, when he was nobody.

No T2. No Backdraft. No Silence of the Lambs, but we get a stinker like Grand Canyon on both of their lists, and then Siskel inexplicably listing Hearts of Darkness at Number 1. Ugh.
It's amazing neither Roger or Gene have Terminator 2 or Point Break on their list.
I know. Most of those movies they've listed I have either not seen or even heard of.
@@agentprime2179 I think this is partially the point of these shows, to bring awareness to lesser seen good movies, instead of propping up the number 1 movie of the year again
T2 was a mainstream money maker. Both of them did like it. Only Roger really liked Point Break, although Gene didn't hate it, he just thought it was overstuffed. To make their Top 10 of the entire year was a high bar.

Terminator 2 is a good movie but not nearly as effective as the first movie and not worthy of a top ten spot.
I've never seen so many people walk out before a movie was over than at Grand Canyon. I didn't like it either.

I am worse because not only did I have a thing for her but also like her daughter LOL. I think I was in Junior High when the song "J'taime" was release . I got to say her daughter is a good actress and has a nice voice ( she has sung with Beck)

I remember seeing Grand Canyon in the theater and thinking it was laughably bad. I am amazed they both thought it was top 10.
If you watch enough of these videos, you will notice that Gene misses badly far more often that Roger. Another good example here as he says he doesn't like a film that has gone down as a classic by many.

These guys started on PBS then abandoned it, I suppose for a better deal. PBS had a homegrown hit and then left in the lurch for more money in syndication. Never thought well of them after that!

There's a handful of good films, but a pretty weak year overall. Like many have said, Silence of the Lambs not being included on either list is a travesty. That is my biggest gripe about these guys is there hatred for horror movies.

I still never heard of some these so called top 10 films. Most look so boring. Why were these guys popular??? They clearly hated horror and action films. They sucked as critics 🤣🤣
