    Thank you for the enjoyment video. We live in a world of cynics who do nothing but spread negativity. I've pivoted my buying habits to pens that are unique or resonate with me. The chase to get everything takes away from the joy of selection and connection.

    When we named our elder son William, it was (sort of) for Shakespeare; but it could have been for this William. I appreciate how you link aesthetics and narrative to our pens. As to the Retro 1951 Tornado, I'd been looking at the Lincoln Copper for a few years, and at the Ohio Pen Show the other week got one for free from the table of the Central Ohio Pen Club! Imagine! Schmidt . Used, but thoroughly cleaned. What you say about Jowo is true. I have a Hardy Penwrights pen with a Jowo nib that is worthy of a gold nib, but the Jowo steel writes so well, I just can't bring myself to swap it out for the more expensive nib. I plan, by the way, to give my Lincoln Copper to William this Christmas. With a vial of Diamine Ancient Copper.

    “Is it worth it?” Nibs and pen materials, craftsmanship and value. We seem to have been on the same wavelength this weekend. I don’t have any rules that I could express clearly regarding value and what makes a pen “worth it” to me, but all those things you mention - story, beauty, order - and then some come into play. I fell in love with a pen with a steel nib, a modern Onoto, with a price of over $800. Onoto tunes their steel nibs to perfection, but at that price point, I couldn’t go with steel. So I didn’t buy the pen? Of course I did. I just spent an extra couple hundred to upgrade to a gold nib. In for a penny, in for a pound. Was that a smart, rational decision on my part? Where do smart and rational come into play when you’re spending over a thousand dollars on a writing instrument that doesn’t really outperform others at a tenth the price? The answer to that is that I wasn’t buying a writing instrument. Or rather, just a writing instrument. I was buying something I found beautiful, beautifully put together, harkening back to a classic style of British pen making that I’ve always admired, and at a price I was willing to pay. We too narrowly define what we’re buying when we buy fountain pens when we say it’s about the nib or the writing experience or the materials.
    Value isn’t a calculation that can be performed with the right algorithm. Humans aren’t machines. We want something more than simple functionality in the things around us. We want emotional connections. I don’t often buy thousand-dollar pens. That would feel like an irresponsible use of money in a world where money can often solve pressing problems. But I want at least a few objects within reach that let me lose myself in their elegance, the precision of their construction, the stories of their genesis. It isn’t rational, but it’s human.

      Truly. Very well said, indeed. I have often said that my value proposition is whatever it needs to be to justify my next pen purchase. Perhaps half in jest. Thank you for the thoughtful and interesting comment.

    It depends entirely upon the tuning - and that can depend upon the company making them - or the seller. I've had tuned steel and gold nibs that write like a dream, whilst the "standard" untuned nib didn't write out of the box. Also it's the experience - if a pen inspires you to pick it up and write with it - then that's enough. Writing is a hard slog - it takes thousands of words to get the right ones - it's a discipline - and if a decent tool keeps your seat on the chair for longer, then it's worthwhile.

    Good video! Enjoyed the historical material. To be honest, in my opinion, Jowo has certainly seemed to position itself as an industry standard, with steel nibs that write as well as and often better than gold nibs. Cheaper and therefore less of a risk to have interesting grinds done. And there are plenty of pens that will take them so swapping is easy.

    Hi, Hemingway. Been a while, but when I saw this, I just had to write. I'm sure you have heard the old saying: "Lawyers are masters in the art of self deception." Or, more prosaically, "lawyers can rationalize anything." Therefore, no one should be surprised that you make a strong case for buying another pen with a Jowo nib. I'd be tempted to buy that pen myself-it is attractive & it's story is a good one. However, I already have a Lincoln Tornado. Really a great little pen & an excellent value. So, I just can't rationalize/deceive myself into thinking I should spring for another Retro 51 with another Jowo nib. 😉

    I like having interchangeable nibs, but I recognise that there is more to a pen than that. In the field of film cameras, a lot of my rangefinders have Seiko shutters, and the cameras themselves have greatly differing characters. And I also live the unique nibs of the Eastern European pens, Sheaffers, mid-century Parkers etc. So much variety! So much scope!

    • @AndrewWertheimer

      You simply cannot beat vintage nibs! I have a weird fixation with the original Canon 5D. I think it takes better pictures than modern digital cameras. It has a romance. And I don’t feel bad putting a Helios lens on it. It’s brilliant. My theory is that they were trying to replicate film then and not a perfect image. That came later. My other favorite digital camera is a Leica X2. Looks like a range finder. Is way too slow, but wow, those images. Like stills from cinema. Sorry for the digression.

    William Morris was a prolific writer of (amongst other things) fantasy novels. As such he was a tremendous influence on later writers such as C. S. Lewis and Tonkin. In the 00s (or maybe 10s), there was a series of moves by the Swiss that limited the broad use of ETA movements, as a long term-ish move to strengthen health of the Swiss watch manufacturers, by broadening watch movement manufacturing in Switzerland. And it more of less worked. There are many more Swiss watch brands that manufacture their own movements. (But some of these are movements bought from ETA, and slightly modified) . The down side is that some of the brands that previously used ETA movements are now gone, and some others have dramatically increased retail prices. There are many types of beauty. Sparkly like Benu's, to pure engineering quality like Schon DSGN, to Bauhaus principles like the unmentionable pen. Another advantage of Jowo nibs is that I can easily trade them around pens. I can put a F-C SIG nib into my (say) Esterbrook, or put my Esterbrook ground Scribe nip into another pen. Or just get a bunch of Jowo #6 nibs ground in interesting ways (I love architects!) and put them in various pens. And Jowo nibs (like ETA movements in the 00s) end up making some small pen manufacturing possible. Without an easy supple of nibs, the whole hand turned pen movement would collapse. And that would be sad.

I have many of his works of fiction and am amused by the elements stolen by Tolkein (eg, Morris has magical characters called Grandalf, and, in another book, Gandorf). Hello HJ. As you probably have already recognized, I am a big admirer of William Morris, the PRB, Arts&Crafts etc. I was considering the "William Morris" Retro51 but finally went for the "Tudor Armor" because I imagined myself sitting in a beautiful British library (e.g. the Bodleian in Oxford) writing with this pen 😎. But maybe a lovely "Blackthorn" will join the "Tudor" soon... 🙄. Yes, Jowo nibs might be considered as "boring" by some people. But, as you mentioned - they have a consistent quality, are interchangeable and most important: they are excellent writers - what can be more important in a fountain pen? Thanks for putting on your finance hat, and applying it to fountain pen purchases & value. Given your background, these views are appreciated from you, Tim. I for one, am on the hunt for Chinese pens with artistic design, and are underrated. I don't agree that other design motifs justify the exorbitant pricing.
    It is the creations of the writer and illustrative artists that count, not any particular tool used. We admire Da Vinci & Caravaggio for their ideas, sketches & paintings, not their quills, brushes, or paints.

      Thanks so much for watching and writing such a great comment. True, but with tools many drive a vehicle for the name. I tend to be more concerned about if I can fit a Jowo nib to the pen, if the original doesn't work out.
    I'm also prepared to guess that most of my Jowo nibs are modified in some way by the pen maker, particularly the gold nibs. I have 6 steel Goulet nibs that are sure to be original, stock Jowo, and they're all very good.
    I'm not getting the William Morris pen. I don't 'need' it. But now you have pushed me to find out more about William Morris.

      @@HemingwayJones I now want to learn more about William Morris (Victorian era art in general), as I am not much familiar with his art and work and life. But I have seen some of that stuff!
      Like that stained glass with Arthur And Lancelot... It's actually on the cover of my pocket edition of the "Lancelot ou le Chevalier à la Charette" (Chrétien de Troyes). I just never looked it up.
      I don't know enough about english/british art in general. What I saw in school was very French-centred... And the rest of my secondary/third studies were just science and engineering.
      Pointers about cool stuff I should checkout are appreciated by the way 🙂

    What is that lovely yellow pen at 17:30? That has a nice aura or something that I can't put my finger on.
    I have to admit, I'm not a Jowo fan. But they can be swapped for a few other things if I like the pen enough otherwise. And I could never criticize anyone's pen collection for having many of them, given that of the 14 pens I regularly use, 3 of them are Benus with broad Shmidt nibs, and each feels very different to use, to me. I feel like each fountain pen collection will skew towards what its keeper enjoys, and they will feel the difference in each that might elude somebody else.

    Thanks Hemingway. I honestly never knew that much about William Morris until now. Beautifully done, as always. The timing of this video was spot on for me too. I just pulled the trigger on a new pen from LeBoeuf, a resurrected fountain pen company from New Jersey that sells some neat limited edition acrylic pens with gold-plated steel Jowo nibs. Mine is a Limited Edition Bram Stoker’s Dracula and I absolutely love it. I paid less than $200 for it and I feel it’s a reasonable price for the pens they make. The nib writes well and all of the other features of the pen make it unique and beautiful to me. I really don’t own a lot of “Jowo nib delivery devices”, but I’m happy with the few that I have. Your pen is lovely, by the way. I hope it sparks some joy for you.

    I am so glad you did this video! I have always loved William Morris designs and have a collection of wrapping papers that I use as wallpaper inside dollhouses and on decoupage crafts, including journal covers! I also have a huge haul of cotton fabrics that will be made into a quilt someday! I have always been able to recognize a William Morris design, but knew nothing about the man. I have been debating about getting that Retro 51! I have several Retro 51 rollerballs and fountain pens, but find the JoWo Stub nib to be a little stiff (my least favorite stub,) or maybe I just had the wrong ink?

    If you want consistency, by all means buy another Jowo nibbed pen in the latest flashy new material. If you want a variety of writing experiences, I'd recommend brands that make their own nibs. Jowo, in that case is just repetitive, no matter what the claim that the maker adjusted each one. Really, same nibs, it's still a very similar writing experience.
    Sometimes there's the draw of a heritage brand, but almost all "revival" brands bear not much similarity to the original, in my experience. Either well beyond the price equivalent of the original, or frankly lower quality (for example, Conklin never used a steel nib, and were built to higher tolerances than modern has shown.) Many seem to rest on brand recognition, and that it's a niche market now. How a $500+ USD Italian pen can not write, yet it's acceptable "because it's Italian." (I've heard that excuse.)
    I like a variety. I'll still have some Jowo, but for my money, vintage provides a great variety, for budget prices usually. (I'm retired and disabled, so I can hunt and watch and wait for bargains.😁)
    Like you pointed out about cartridge converter systems, there's a familiarity and consistency with the use of only a few brands of nibs.
    Great overview! Thoroughly enjoyable!

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks so much for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it. You know, it’s tough to argue with vintage. You can get amazing nibs, Ideal #2 with flex for $200. They are delicate though, but the value. Thanks!

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 8 місяців тому

      @@HemingwayJones There's comparable to Waterman's in flex. Might take a hunt, but many frankly generic Warranted 14K are flexible, because they were thin enough, being kind of the vintage Jowo equivalent. Used in many budget pens or as a "cheap fix." And also many pre 1930 have decent flex. Before carbon copies.😉
      Stub nibs, I highly recommend English vintage. Many of them are stubs. American tends to be fine or extra fine.
      Sure, different filling systems than today, but I have even almost 90 year old pens still on the original ink sac. They last longer than people claim.😁 And no harder than a piston filler to clean.

    One of my first fountain pens was a Retro 51. That was about fifteen years ago, and the writing experience was poor. It had constant hard starts, when it wrote it was dry, and it was scratchy. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought another one a year later with the same results. I swore off of Retro 51 at that point. Maybe they have improved from a decade ago. I hope so.

    I actualy put little importance if a nib was made by Jowo or somebody else. But I tend to like when the pen makers have their in-house nibs, as they do have more specificity and character to their pens. I do not think I own many "Jowo Nib Delivery devices". I do not remember who makes the small nibs on the Kaweco Sport and Liliput series. Is that Jowo?

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  8 місяців тому +1

      I thought Kaweco used Jowo, but made to their specs, which also makes things more complex. I like when a company is self-contained or vertically aligned, but I get why there are suppliers. It has to be pricey. This is another reasons why Magna Carta is so special. I have a letter from you, By the Way. Cannot wait to read it.
