Quick tip... Prime the oil filter by adding oil into the housing before reinstalling the cap/filter assembly. That will make sure it doesn't run dry for that split second when you first start the car.
if the oil filter was a typical can style, upsdie down, this makes sense, for BMW it is not gonna help,,,you musta never changed oil on a bimmer lol...
Good video. I always tend to use a can of engine flush before changing the oil, especially if its been a while. Also, K&N make an oil filter for the N20/N26, part number PS-7014. Costs $17. K&P Engineering also make a re-usable all metal oil filter conversion for the N20/N26, it costs about $99. BMS also make an aluminium oil filter cap upgrade for the N20/N26, for those who have problems with the plastic ones cracking. Costs about $45-$50.
One day you'll do an oil change on a RWD N20 with the plastic drain plug lol 8nm, I got myself a bicycle torque wrench for that, it's very easy to over tighten.
when pouring oil into the vehicle turn the container opening up, this gives you better control of the pour stream. this prevents the oil (or any fluid ) from gurgling. nice video. I'm looking for a video on oil filter housing gasket replacement on N26. thanks
U didn’t word it correctly and some may not understand instead in simpler terms what u should’ve said is “ when pouring oil into the vehicle the container placement will cause it gurgle u can bypass that by simply turning the container on its side to pour” this is way easier to understand
Hey I got a question. I’m pretty much a weekend warrior and I was wondering on a F30 n20 4 cylinder 2.0. Online it says to use 0w-30 and a lot of vids they use 5w-30. Which is it?
Rahil Ahmad ... YES if you are running hard, high rpm, and hot. Rather than the 10,000 miles recommended by BMW...IMHO, cut it to 5000 for piece of mind.
Hello, Bryan, hey, how do I know what grade of oil my car uses? Mine is a 2015 f30 N20 320i. I bought the BMW. They gave me 0w30 and I see that you use 5w30.
Is there a reason you go with 5W30 over other weight oils? I have a 2016 320i XDRIVE and the manual lists off a bunch of different weights, so I'm wondering the pros/cons of each. Thanks!
Thinner oil does give a little better fuel economy. Thicker oil is better at preventing / stopping small oil leaks. Outside temperature range is also a factor in oil weight selection.
What if the car is just asking for oil to be added for example a quart of oil is what my car says. Do i still have to drain the oil and also put in a new filter.
good video, I just got a 2017 X1 Xdrive 28I I want to start doing my own oil changing using Liquid Molly too. First off I have several questions 1st is alright to use good ramps instead of jacks and jacks stands I think that will be easier for me. 2nd, on my SUV I'm having a tough time locating the oil filter. I see it no where from above my guess it's below near the oil drain plug in another hidden door. One more question my SUV is preowned it's a CPO from the dealer with just at 50K. BMW says 10K oil changes but to me that seems way to long I prefer 6-7K and they say to use 0-20 full synthetic oil. Which I've read is used more for MPG than overall engine life. I was wondering if switching to 5-30 may be better?
Where does the crush washer go? I saw you set it aside, but may have missed where it was used or mentioned again? I'm assuming it's for models without a plastic sump plug?
I accidentally reset my oil. It did say 18,000km and it now says 24,000km. What should I do? It’s booked in for a service at BMW in a couple of weeks so should I just tell them I reset it accidentally? Or I should I just change the oil now instead?
Are there people here who are particular with the type of oil change you use on your Beemer? I currently use Castro’s Edge 0W30 as mentioned by BMW. Is Liquy Molly any different?
I always use factory. You may save a few bucks with other brands but I honestly believe factory is the way to go for longevity. Millions of BMWs use it without issues. Why fix if it ain’t broken?
hi looking into buying an 228i/328i because in belgium 6 cillinders ar becoming way to expensive i drive an e36 320i now (6 cillinder) and wanna one to something turbo in belgium i cant just turbo my e36 its not legal and believe me its not worth driving it illegal so what do you think about the n20/n26 engine ar they any good and to what hp can it get ? without blowing it up if i do buy one i wanna go full ham on it stage2 + so it can atleast keep up with the big boys pleas help me out your help would be verry helpfull 🙏🏻
I have a 2012 bmw3 328i TwinPower turbo gasoline engine. I’m having trouble on what oil it needs but I look on the Manuel for the recommendation, best one was “castrol bmw high performance SAE 5w-30.” But there so many same but different I wanna make sure I get the right” one. Idk how it looks do you have a link for that castrol oil?
I jack my wife's care to do an oil change today. Jacked the front mid point of axel. Placed a jack stand on each side. changed the oil, reset the indicator. When turning the steering wheel left or right, it makes a loud grinding noise then the chassis stabilization error popped up. So I decided to jack up the car again and tried turning the wheels. no noise. when it gets to the end of the turn, it makes a lower sound noice and the chassis stabilization error comes up. Does anyone have any ideas?
Sorry bro but that oil u used was an HC. HydroCracked grp 3. Pennzoil euro lx 0w-30 is real as is liqui moly synthoil premium 5w-40, shell rotella T 0W-40/5W-40, AND CASTROL EDGE 0W=30, AND Total quartz 9000 0w-30. Of course Triax ultra, Motul, and maybe maybe Mobil 1 0-40/0-50 is probably your best bets. The shell rotella t will clean your engine good as it’s a diesel and gas oil with a pour point of -51C. Castro’s 0w-30 pour point is -61F. However the best oil I think is pennzoil (9shell helix ultra) euro LX 0w-30. It has a viscosity index of 207! Amazing! Look for an oil with hths number over 3.5 and TBN over 7.
Sai Thor ... It really does not matter. BMW OEM oil vs other oils that meet BMW specifications are fine. Usually, which is the best price?? Go that route.
Car ramps make life so much easier.
Totally agree 👍
Quick tip... Prime the oil filter by adding oil into the housing before reinstalling the cap/filter assembly. That will make sure it doesn't run dry for that split second when you first start the car.
It will drain back to the pan before you get the cap back on. Won't help and it's not needed at all.
@@brooksreff2846 prob be better putting oil on the filter directly instead
completly unnecessary ...
What damage do you think running any engine for a split second without oil will cause? smh.
if the oil filter was a typical can style, upsdie down, this makes sense, for BMW it is not gonna help,,,you musta never changed oil on a bimmer lol...
Excellent instructions, clear, thorough and detailed enough. Really appreciate it. Thank you 🙏

I tried using KN filter... it didn't fit my N20 engine
What advantages does a K&N oil filter have?
just use a Mann... oil filter KN aint gonna help...
You make all DIY easy thanks for these type of videos 💪🏻
Thanx Brian, your a Bmw god!! Lol Happy holidays!
One day you'll do an oil change on a RWD N20 with the plastic drain plug lol 8nm, I got myself a bicycle torque wrench for that, it's very easy to over tighten.
I was gonna say.. I thought the 328i had a plastic drain plug, as I've been buying the Mann kits with them
Yup, I have a 1/4" lb-inch torque wrench, 8 Nm is 70 Lb-inch
Wow i know this is an old comment but the fact that they’d even use a plastic drain plug… smh BMW

really like them, simple but detailed. thanks Kies
you should do a timing chain replacement video on n20/n26 engines m

OH!!! Fancy new floor! Nice! & good video.
I feel like I could tackle this! Totally did the Gloss Black M grilles after watching your video. Next up, roof wrap!
Thank you for this! by the way, what kind of torque wrench is that?!
Like your back to basics videos
What “dealer code” will be in the I drive then? I really want a clean service history still after 4 years.
4!?!?!?!?
Awesomeness
That's a lot of jacks in one sentence Bryan :)
Good idea with doing the filter first
Hey I got a question. I’m pretty much a weekend warrior and I was wondering on a F30 n20 4 cylinder 2.0. Online it says to use 0w-30 and a lot of vids they use 5w-30. Which is it?
Can you do a diy video on the n20/n26 oil filter housing. Its a very common problem leaking oil. Thanks
I just did mine at home last year there’s a video on UA-cam with how u do it
There's couple videos on UA-cam but none are very specific, i had to remove few extra things then how some of the videos showed
Great vid, easy to follow, thanks!
Thank you, to the point.
good vid. quick. no bs
Shop is looking good 👍
So I'm late to this but about the reset being unsuccessful. What "clock not being set" are you talking about? Like the actual clock?
Thanks Brian, good tutorial!!
How
Much oil do you put on a 2014 328i xdrive I see on the forms that’s it’s 6.1 quarts not sure mes help
Thanks for your video very useful
I have 2013 bmw 328 xi with drive train malfunction.what is your take on this issue
Thanks for your help in advance
I filled mine with 5.75L and it went right to max level. I’ll try 5L next time as seen here..
thx it’s good to plan change oil soon me.
Is it true that n20/n26 owners need more frequent oil changes if we are tuned to stage 2.....? I’m using BM3
Rahil Ahmad ... YES if you are running hard, high rpm, and hot. Rather than the 10,000 miles recommended by BMW...IMHO, cut it to 5000 for piece of mind.
I would always do 5 or less these things run hot regardless especially with tune
you recommend using luquimoly flush before changing oil ???? Is the fuel filter change necesary in this car????
Hello, Bryan, hey, how do I know what grade of oil my car uses? Mine is a 2015 f30 N20 320i. I bought the BMW. They gave me 0w30 and I see that you use 5w30.
Any thoughts on why light reset for oil change comes back unsuccessful? Do you recommend any OBD that works with f30 chasis?
Quick question. When we use a ramp or a jack like you have, the car is tilted at an angle. Would that cause the oil to not fully drain out?
Thank you,
Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you very much!
Liqui is the best for this engine ??? Thank you
Mine 2016 328i takes 6.9 qrts., and the idrive reads the oil level is ok. I wonder why some take more?
what brand of torque wrench are you using? I like the warning sound feature.
Is there a reason you go with 5W30 over other weight oils? I have a 2016 320i XDRIVE and the manual lists off a bunch of different weights, so I'm wondering the pros/cons of each. Thanks!
Usually just based on temperature. Sometimes thicker if you're heavily modded too.
Hy..what about LqM 4200TopTech ? Is good for this engine?
good video, I just got a 2017 X1 Xdrive 28I I want to start doing my own oil changing using Liquid Molly too. Hey Brian, is it recommend to add a bit of new engine oil right into new oil filter?
No, the oil housing will fill with oil within a few seconds upon starting the engine. Don't waist your time.
Where does the crush washer go?
I saw you set it aside, but may have missed where it was used or mentioned again?
I'm assuming it's for models without a plastic sump plug?
PS. Great video(s)... Thanks for taking the time to make these!
How much would a shop charge for this? A shop near me is charging $110, is this a reasonable price? They do use LiquiM as well
I accidentally reset my oil. It did say 18,000km and it now says 24,000km. What should I do? It’s booked in for a service at BMW in a couple of weeks so should I just tell them I reset it accidentally? Or I should I just change the oil now instead?
Do a N20 Downpipe install!
Some n20’s have a plastic drain plug and pan. 10mm I think, 8nm
yes its 10mm
Yes. Its 8Nm not 25
Did u add those accent lights in the dash trim ? what year is that car
Are there people here who are particular with the type of oil change you use on your Beemer? I currently use Castro’s Edge 0W30 as mentioned by BMW. Is Liquy Molly any different?

Nice, video! Cab you do one on a B58 in the future??
Very helpful thank you
how much oil goes in there. 5 inches?
My 320i doesn’t have a central jacking location.
I think you should level the car to drain more of the old oil.
Not necessary
the drain is on the rear bottom of pan, tilted makes no diff in what comes out
Is 5W30 ok for the N20? I thought BMW recommended Castrol 0W30/OW40
It is okay 5w30 will just be a little thicker than 5w20 oil
hi looking into buying an 228i/328i because in belgium 6 cillinders ar becoming way to expensive i drive an e36 320i now (6 cillinder) and wanna one to something turbo in belgium i cant just turbo my e36 its not legal and believe me its not worth driving it illegal so what do you think about the n20/n26 engine ar they any good and to what hp can it get ? without blowing it up if i do buy one i wanna go full ham on it stage2 + so it can atleast keep up with the big boys pleas help me out your help would be verry helpfull 🙏🏻
Hi Kies motorsport what engine oil type and grade for F30 LCi with B48 engine? Thankss
Hello sir my oil plug is different I think since it’s xdrive and I cannot seem to find the tool for it
Alex 97F30 also some use a 10mm hex
Xdrive is just a normal 16mm. Its a standard metal drain plug
Can you do oil pan?
Anybody know if it’s okay to use a metal drain plug instead of the plastic one?
What oil do you use for the n55 Mobil 1 5w 30? Or Castrol?
Thank you.
Subscribed please do tutorial how to install upgrade intercooler and charge pipe for BMW M2 2018? Thank you.
will this work on a 2018 330e?
F30 320i engines 5litres also?thanx
can i use any type of oil on my bmw n20 2017???
Hi, Is it a 86mm oil filter wrench that you used to remove the oil filter mechanism?
I believe it's 88mm, 16 flute
How do i know how much oil to put in?

Shoot I sue liqui moly 5w-30 LL for mine. It’s amazing. Yeah 5w-30 Castrol full synthetic is good too.

where is the oil filter on a 2017 330i? it's not visible
Nice....
When drain the old oil the car should be in the horizontal position, but this car was in sloping position. eg: front is higher than rear of the car.
Central jacking location must be a little bit different between models I cannot find that bulge under my 2014
Do You guys recommend switching oils in the n20/n26 if using bootmod3?
liquimoly 5w-40
How much is 25 nm? Hand tight?
What was the engine light on ur dashboard for ???
Its not turned on,once car turns on it goes away. This is with most vehicles when u have it on ignition position #1.
no dipstick, so how do you electronically see the level?
in the infotainment system. Start it up and bring it up on the menu screen
Wich better oil liqui moly or motul ???
Liqui moly no doubt
Why cant you use original oil filter?
You can.. Mann makes the filter for bmw, its the exact same filter for less money
Is it the same for a 2013 F10 ?
For the n20/n26 it’s the same process
Is Liquimoly preferred over OEM oil?
Sai Thor ... It really does not matter. BMW OEM oil vs other oils that meet BMW specifications are fine. Usually, which is the best price?? Go that route.
I personally prefer liqhimoly.
I've used oem, pennzoil, royal purple... liqui moly has been the best imo
I have a N26 F32 and the internet is telling me 0W-30.
Damn i had to figure out how to do the oil change my self 1 week ago
I think BMW recommend 0w 30.
This video looks familiar 🤔
Well, I guess the jack method won't be happening here. Ranps it is.

What torque wrench is that?
Is it okay that I use lm 5w-40?
