I first heard this beautiful song in a Catholic church a very long time ago. I purchased at that time, the cassette and fell in love. This young lady's voice is so beautiful, it gives me chills. So pure and...wow. Just wow.
My friend died, I went into church for the first time in awhile and sat in the back. When I heard this song I was in peace with him next to me in spirt.
Beautiful. Oh Dear God thank you for blessing us with the peacefulness of nature and God’s unconditional Love captured in the singing of this wonderful hymn ✝️
From the Place of a Pastor, this is the most BEAUTIFUL rendition of this song! You can truly hear the heart you have for God in this song and your vocalization of Haugen's words are harmonious with the Word's of David the Psalmist. May God continue to bless you as you dedicate worship unto the Throne of God! -Bishop Brown
I love this hymn of worship to our wonderful Lord. Its one of my favorites. Listening to this lady's voice covering it was just a delightful experience 🙂 Thank you for sharing this!
I first heard this at my grandpa’s funeral in 1990. Used it for dad in 2007 snd mom just last Thursday. I love this song and want it at my funeral Mass too. Thank you for your beautiful singing and playing- goosebump quality.
Sonia me encanta este canto y a mi niño de 12 años como le encanta cantarlo y tiene una voz preciosa se oye tan tierno inocente cuando lo escucho cantar que lloro de la emocion de verlo cantar asi
We sung this in Mass yesterday and I was looking for a video because it was stuck in my head...little did I know I'd stumble upon such a fabulous singer!
I looked up your video two years ago when trying to find the whole song for our daughter's funeral. I loved your rendition so much I saved it on my computer. I found a friend to sing it for us at the funeral. Today we attended a service in our church and they used this song as the responsorial. I had a really difficult time sitting through it because of our sad reminder and because it's such a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing your talent with this gorgeous song.
I performed this song as a solo for my church a few weeks ago. I grew up with this being one of my favorite church hymns as well; it became even more special after it was sung during my grandfather's funeral in January. You have a wonderful gift. It was a treat to be able to hear another talented musical collegue.
It is a beautiful hymn isn't it. I sang it for my grandmother's funeral as well about a week ago. It is very special to me. Thank you so much for listening. There will be more to come so keep a look out and let me know what you think. God bless!
Where did you go, Sonia? This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I ever heard! It’s been one of my favorites for a long time. You have a beautifully natural voice.
Of all the hymns I've heard during rare outings to church with the family, this one is so rarely sung. I heard it at a funeral of my great grandmother, and once in church. Either way, I much prefer women singing it. Seems more... soothing? Comforting I suppose. Very glad I found this video. You have a beautiful voice.
I agree it sounds better with a female voice with a mixed choir providing support. I heard both and i am a man. But i think the tempo is too slow on all youtube versions even the original by the composer.
My preference is for the hymn to be sung by the entire congregation. That way it becomes more of a communal prayer than a performance, not that I don't appreciate this beautiful rendition.
goognam goognws this recording certainly is a lovely rendition, but I also like it in the lower register of the male voice as well. My thoughts about the tempo is that the composer might have wanted to evoke the patience and steadiness of The Good Shepherd. As for the other recordings you’ve heard, despite the composer being Lutheran, much of his work was initially embraced by the Catholics. As a former Lutheran who married into a Catholic family, I’ve noticed that in many Catholic parishes even lively hymns are played at funeral dirge tempo.
I have both tears and goose pimps listening to my most loved church hymn given body and soul. I could actually feel God's embrace listening to this song. Thank you Sonia for blessing us with your voice.
Absolutely sublime, Sonia. I’m praying for people facing a life-altering surprise, and your rendition of Psalm 23 (a la Marty Haugen) is the perfect accompaniment.
We sang this song during the Ordination Mass for permanent deacons in my diocese. It is indeed a very beautiful song and you sang it wonderfully. Thank you for sharing.
Sonia.....you have a sweet and beautiful voice. So many people here love this song and your voice. Please consider putting out more videos here on youtube. If you have any social media, please post links if you allow. Love this song, you sang it just perfect.
Hearing and singing this song brings powerful emotions of awareness of how closely we are bound by life and death and only have to comfort one another to fulfill the promise of these words. We are all in love and of love especially at those times when we are most fearful.
This is one of my ultimate favorite songs and you sing this song, simply so beautiful. I hear you sing it everyday and I cannot get enough of the song and the way you sing it and play the piano. I sure hope you will be singing other beautiful hymns very soon. If you are going to make a CD, I sure would love to buy it. Thank you for sharing your beautiful talented voice with us. God bless.
I guess this comes as a repetitive comment but I just have to say that I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it in church. You played and sang this version emotionally and I felt every bit of it. Thank you for sharing and be blessed!
Shepard Me, Oh God, is one of my Favorite Hymnal songs. It speaks so many things I cannot say and always brings me to tears, I really enjoyed hearing this song and your singing of it. Yes, It brought me to tears again

Wow - amazing talent for a beautiful song! I heard this song in Mass today and was moved by the beauty of the lyrics. So I looked up the music on google and found your version of the song on UA-cam. I love the way you sing this song. Thanks for sharing you God given talent!
Hello Sonia, I am a guitarist in CA but I'm from Rome, NY. I spoke to an old friend (Vinnie - Vocalist) today back in Rome. We played in bands in the 60's. During our conversation he mention this hymn and said to listen to you. He said it's his all time favorite and raved about your voice. I just listened to it. I've done worship music for 30 years and still play at a few bay area hospitals as a certified clinical musician. When I listened to it I loved it but as good as it is, I know what makes it so great. You have the Spirit within you of the living God. That's where your power and love come from. I'm disappointed you don't have any recent videos and I hope you are continuing to bless people with your gifts. Love you in Christ Sonia. --David Snellbacher
This is such a beautiful cover of a song I have enjoyed my whole life! Grew up eith my parents in church choir and this was always one of my favorites! Wonderful voice, reminds me of Amy Lee of Evanescence
Your song has saved me on many dark days. I battle depression and bipolar disorder, and it becomes overwhelming at times, I feel like there is no way out beyond suicide. However, listening to your song brings hope and makes me realize the Lord has bigger plans for me.
You have an amazing voice. I pull up this video anytime I am going through a rough time, and sometimes during my normal prayers. It sometimes moves me to tears. God Bless You.
We had this sung at my Mom's funeral. I sang in our Music Ministry at our church for ten years. I can't sing at all any more but it still plays in my head. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice and talent!
I can remember hearing my grandfather, father, and others sing this in choir. Now they are gone and the Church is gone as well. The organist was also a beloved family member. She would make some parts , such as the intro , sound like bells. It was amazing. I can still hear it in my head. Sadly, I heard of her passing a few hours ago. Nothing will ever sound the same, but your recording was very beautiful. Thank you.
I am from Southern NJ. Mascio is my married name . My mother in law was a DeLuca. Her parents and some siblings came from Italy . She grew up in Camden , NJ.
Thank you for responding. Mascio is my married name also. My husband’s family is from Bloomfield in Pittsburgh, PA. Also from Italy before that! Good name! ❤️
A few seconds into this video.....obviously a wonderful performance of this hymn....often sung at funerals though I think it should be used more in regular worship, especially if the 23rd psalm is in the lectionary that week. Sonia, thank you so much for this video.
I first heard this beautiful song in a Catholic church a very long time ago. I purchased at that time, the cassette and fell in love. This young lady's voice is so beautiful, it gives me chills. So pure and...wow. Just wow.

The Church is not gone, it exists in the Latin Mass crowd, where this song is not heard.
I was playing the piano on the Praise Nation video, and my last name is also Mascio.
