  • We compare the differences and similarities between 3 Porsche 991.2 GT3's that were built and delivered within 2 weeks of each other from the factory. Why is one paint job better than another? Answer: I don't know. They each had pluses and minuses...so no clear winner. But the real question is why are there differences? If you have an idea why, leave a comment below. We also discuss a few tips for cleaning interior glass, applying decals, removing headlights, and how to inspect your job before delivery. Hope you enjoy! -L

Hey guys, interested to hear your thoughts on why cars built as the same time (within a few days/week) of each other would have these variances in overall finish quality. The paint thickness and coverage was almost exactly the same on all 3 cars, but wonder why the finish or refinement was unique to each color. I hope one day I get to go to the factory and see if for myself. This "finishing" inconsistency is common amongst most brands and most likely why the cars are detailed at the dealership before the customers picks it up. Thought it would be fun to compare 3 "non-detailed" paint jobs, same car, same (appox) build time, and delivery date. Best paint was green. Best wing was blue. Best overall paint + wing was white. Hope you enjoy the episode as much as I do working on these cars. AMAZING!

take one part human error, one part time deadlines, combined with quality control's acceptable variances and staff hours limits and i'd think we get little differences in each and still not a prefect product. I'd imagine that every automaker would like to spend the time to make these prefect but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you see it) it's just not feasible.

I work in the manufacturing industry and can say with certainty that not all assembly lines are created equal. To elaborate more on this statement, personnel, equipment and, sometimes, even process will vary. No two detailers will polish the exact same to give an analogy.

I don't think the factory is to blame for the differences you found. It can be really difficult to isolate these defects when there are so many variables involved. Their entire supply chain has to be on the same page as far as handling and that is usually the most difficult thing to accomplish. It is impressive that the paint thickness is that close on all three cars within a tenth of a mil. When the car leaves the factory, it's usually mishandled by freight and LTL shipping companies, or dealers. They are usually not trained on special handling practices, or they are simply in a rush. On a car this expensive, they should just use a protective film prior to leaving the factory.

I've worked at a Porsche dealer in Germany for a year, only the most expensive (GT3 RS, 911 R...) models arrive with a full cover on because the don't have to travel far from the factory to the dealer, and they don't sit around for long because of the small distance. I'm now working at a Volkswagen dealer in Germany, and some of the new models (Tiguan Allspace) get built in Mexico. Because of the huge distance and the long time they take to get here they all have a comlete cover on them.
I think the specific differences on these cars came from different Guys doing the refinement and or final inspection. Or maybe the dealer did interfere with the paint finish even though they didn't detail it. (The likes of "Oh here's a fingerprint, let's remove that with some spray wax") We used to do that alot at the Porsche dealer.

Different workers, different shifts, different experience levels, fatigue issues, time constraints, machine tolerances get sloppy where operations are automated, dust (every factory has dust problems), etc. etc. -- all play a part in quality control issues at factories.

@@pwrshots It is easy to say this when you're not in an actual factory. You have to consider that they are probably seeing 2 cars every minute pass through their process. This means you will likely have 10+ people inspecting the car in various locations and if one has considerable defects that may mean they rush to catch up on the next.

Sure, but look at the time it took for just these three cars. That desired perfection would likely tack on an extra $5k to $10k for something the average car enthusiast can't even appreciate. Most aren't going to be as educated in the type of detailing a guy like Larry is capable of, so they just won't see the value. They may look for scratches and swirls, and that's about it. So they won't see why the car could cost up to $10k more for what they perceived to be a flawless finish to begin with.

@@brads3104 Yep - I WORKED in a dealership and tried to get them to change their approach and attitude. Actually its the MANAGEMENT that doesn't care most of the time and don' t give the wash and prep guys the proper tools and training to not reck a car before its even in the show room or the keys are handed over to the new car client, let alone the "courtesy" washes when the cars are in for service. I went to a detailing school and the owner INSISTS on taking delivery of his new car WITH all the shipping wrap on it and that his new car is not TOUCHED by the prep guys. Unfortunately even if the prep guys WANTED to do a proper paint saving prep, the management would nix that idea by saying its too time consuming and costly - not true if they knew what they were talking about.

I just wanted to say I've watched 2 videos now and have become quite a fan. Shame that when you pay for a Porche GT3 the paint doesn't come from the factory the way it should. Keep up the good work. :)

i’m down in Florida. my initial thought was “why the hell would someone ship a car to you for some paint correction and paint protection film”. plenty of local places to do this. 20 minutes later i can honestly say you make my local guy seem sloppy in comparison. he should be ashamed. my gt3 was riddled with bubbles and the interior was a total mess when he was done. kudos, great job.

I'm always impressed with your level of attention to detail and exactness. People generally not dot attain this, they are born with it. I am glad you are putting it to work and following your passion! It shows.
I am shocked however that Porsche allows these cars to leave the factory with paint blemishes. That's unacceptable. At least you were able to correct it.

Tip for the glass Larry. Try Autoglym professional glass polish ( any high quality glass polish should work ) and add a little tar and adhesive remover. I no it sounds odd but trust me it works haha. Mix it 10% adhesive remover and 90& polish Mic really well and use a polishing sponge or hard applicator and give the glass a good scrub then leave to dry and remove as normal. Works a treat every time.

I worked at an OEM, and I can 99% guarantee you those cars are not sanded/polished before leaving the factory. The paint process uses base and clear coats that attempt to mitigate the need for what you would consider proper finishing.
More than likely, any defects that you see are due to handling after it was completed. Employees drive cars out of the factory/around the lot, onto the boats that ship them to the US, etc. They go through a lot of hands and pass by a lot of people before they get to you.
Also, different paints typically run through the same paint robots with a changeover process, so the quality of the changeover and the ambient setting in the room plays a huge role in how the paint finish comes out. Then they go through final inspections where the goal is to identify defects but of course can introduce new ones depending on who the inspector is. To be honest, Almost no one will call a car for repair due to swirls and buff marks. Unless there are actual hairs or other physical defects in the paint that could cause it to flake and rust, it'll pass QA.

Wrong. There are plenty of videos of the entire manufacturing process at Porsche on these cars and they are sanded/polished by hand by the people on the production line.

kern417 I took Euro Delivery of my 2008 CARRERA WHITE/Gun Metal GT3 RS & I watchedthe paint jobs which are very much hand applied as well as getting SOME cut/buffing...It all seemed to depend on the colour..

pretty sure those 3 marks were from the suction tooling used in the factory.

Literally the first video if you search "porsche manufacturing process" shows a 2018 Turbo being painted by a robot. The link is z3zuPyjFTsk. Feel free to post a link of cars getting hand painted but it's not going to happen.

    • @FourT6and22
      @FourT6and22 6 років тому

Not hand painted. But after they are painted by robots, workers do sand and buff them by hand. First few minutes of this video you can see robots painting the car. Then a guy HAND PAINTING the hood. Then someone buffing the paint with a hand-held wheel. ua-cam.com/video/z3zuPyjFTsk/v-deo.html Yes, this is an Exclusive Series car. But the regular production cars and the GT cars are 100% touched by some dude with a buffer wheel too.

With window cleaning, I've found that mixing IPA with distilled water, rather than ordinary tap water, helps to reduce water staining. Distilled water is cheap for what's required, so there's no reason not to use it. Even when using distilled water, I find it difficult to remove all traces of water staining, so that's a current area of research.

damn that vision wall of cars is inspiring. made me think. I guess I do sort of that with the model cars I build. I just give them a special spot. I put the same ammount of attention to detail into that as you put into your detailing. In fact I use the method explained for your 964, which is my dream car and I recently built it for my collection, to ensure a perfect result of the paint. Detailing with machines is a bit hard on this scale because it's really hard to get deeper scratches out of the paint so I shoot for the best result possible straight after clear coating the second time.
anyways this is inspiring, keep doing it please

For any UK viewers watching, When Larry says the car has "6 mil of paint" it's not 6 millimetres, the clear bra is defiantly not 6 millimetres, it's also known as a "thou" so the cars had 6 thousandth of an inch (0.006 inch)
