Sticker Removal & Paint Restoration: Alex Roy's Polizei BMW M5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 чер 2024
- This is the record breaking BMW E39 M5 owned by Alex Roy. He broke the NY to LA cannonball driving record in 2006 in 31 hours, 4 mins. It has since been broken again by various drivers, however, Alex was the first to break the long standing record after 23 years. On today's episode, we discuss 3 steps for decal removal, how to remove glue, how to polish vinyl stickers, and how to clean navigation screens. We also introduce a new wheel stand for cleaning rims once removed from the car. Alex Roy asked if I could remove the Gumball stickers in anticipation of his movie release: "Apex 2: The Secret Race Across America" coming out later this year. Hope you enjoy the many many many hours of work :) -L

This car means a lot to a lot of people. So glad it's getting love.
.. and it's such a pretty blue, too!
I have to say, sometimes, I like a dirty car more than a clean one. Like the Le Mans racers after the 24hrs, this should have been left dirty, war wounds and all. Tells a story.
You still have your M5?
How much did this restoration cost?
lol you think they would say the actual price Austin G ?
For those of you wondering, the record was broken in a Mercedes a few years later. However, the M5 was the first to break the original 23 year old record. The car is the focus of the videos, not the record itself :)
You forgot to link to Alex's video explaining all the devices
My dream car right there :) but the 540 will have to do, nice work Larry
Emily1963eh get the 540 with the m sport package
@@johnbauss4246 they have done cannonball charity rides, and various other cannonball runs together. Full streams off them having fun, om the vinwiki UA-cam paige. :)
Martin Olsvoll I’m aware, I’ve seen the videos. Ed invited him as a courtesy, Ed is just that kind of guy.
I am a Geochemist with lab experience and I use buckets when soaking bolts in a solution. Larry uses a freakin beaker. My type of nerd.

Larry is definitely a nerds nerd. I can be even worse. I have a habit of analyzing a job so much I end up not even doing it. My wife calls it “paralyzation by analyzation”. Lol
Yes but you're not shooting youtube videos so a bucket will do :)
Dude, remember his and his wife's backgrounds!
So hard to outdo Larry on so many levels. Usually, I just sit in awe.
2 stripes on the roof to help the plane spot a car doing 3 times the speed of everyone else on the road... Love it.
that make sens lol
Damn, don't think that's been that clean since it rolled out the showroom!
It was awesome to see it all dirtied up with the stickers as that was the car's character, but equally feels nice to see it's had a well earned glow up.
Man what a dream to be able to work on that car!
You do a really good job of incorporating the story of detailing. (If that makes sense). The steps in the process are good information but the passion you have for the job and the ability to tell a story make your videos really enjoyable to watch. Thank you Larry.
i absolutely love you work but word of advice from a window Tinter. when using a razor blade on the windows never drag it back and forth. always lift on the back stroke. that will prevent potential scratches
Ohhh Larry, what should i say?
It's a HUGE pleasure to watch this and see my wheel detailing stand - together with my dream car of that time!
As always a great video! Like the way you take us through the single steps, fantastic turnaround of Alex' amazing and "abused" M5.
Honestly: That car needs its stickers back! :D
Glossboss Wheeldetailer:
These stands are NOT for sale - so please don't contact my detailing friends from Glossboss or me in this case ;)
I build these for a couple of friends to improve my (still bad) welding works - and to simplify their / my detailing hobby.
Maybe i'll write a blog how you could easily build one at home. First version was made of wood with 3 rollers, watch the my Porsche green Audi S6 in the Blog.
Larry and Jim (White Details, UK) got one of those as a little "thank you" for these great videos and time they offer to create them.

I like how you always emphasize that the best way to do something is the one that works best for you. Sick of mechanics telling me that one way is the ONLY way if you want it to be "done right".
It's funny how this car held up the amazing documentary 32 Hours 7 Minutes for what seemed like years, but made it that much more incredible to watch.
One of the most famous M5s. Such a great color and story!
What a relief 😅
Watching Alex with his M5 going all over the world for years, finally the stickers are off and the M5 got the love it deserves.
Great Job 👍🏽
This was an awesome video!! This poor poor car is finally getting the love it really really deserves. Thank you Larry!
This is awesome. I can't wait to get my E39 M5 detailed. It's been sitting for over a year under a cover, but the paint and interior are still in good condition. This got me really excited. Great work, Larry.
Legendary car. I always appreciate your attention to detail. I know it might seem silly but I think if you had a running timer for the amount of time you spent from start to finish the viewers would appreciate it (me included). It would give a sense of scope for how much time is actually spent to do this.
Hands down Larry is the best detailer I've ever seen
Ricky rozay look up white details. Other level...
You obviously haven't seen enough detailers then.
@@johngresty758 I was about to say. Larry is amazing. And I love him and his videos. But theres tons of detailers more skilled than him. They just dont have UA-cam channels. And I'm sure Larry would agree.
I haven't watched the video yet but I already know it's gonna be the most satisfying thing I've ever seen
Would love to see a reaction video of the customer picking up the car! Car looks amazing and like new!
E39 M5 was a classic bmw one of the best style bmw from the line up along with the E36 and E46
@Johnny63Xenos take that back you blasphemer
two words to describe Larry DETAIL GOD thank you for taking the time to help and educate and help us all become better detailers .
Always a pleasure watching you detail can grab popcorn and just watch for hours! 🙏
Quite the development when seeing the new studio now in comparison. Amazing job!
The inspiration to clean my own vehicle like crazy is only because of you. You are really a dedicated person, I just love the way you work on any car, totally asthetical.
Never have I been so excited about a UA-cam video. This car is a legend !
Larry, it's amazing what you do! Props to you! And, your R8 is awesome by the way!
I falled in love with the M5 E39 series and still love it till now because of the Alex Roy's car
back then when Gumball was much more enjoyable
Car just makes me smile! So cool to see you put the AMMO touch on it! Thanks Larry and Alex!!
Very good video pal. If I may make one suggestion, at the end of videos like these I would suggest doing a 50/50 split screen shot to show the fantastic volume of work and transformation
Larry your the best, you are most certainly a professional, watching you're vids always inspires me, you are without a doubt the best detailer on UA-cam
I really respect how much you care about your work
My new AMMO zippy is hands down the best Christmas gift my wife bought me. Well done!
Awesome. LOVED this on Gumball 3000 back in the day. This brought back so many memories!
Was this car in the Teckademics Mischief 3000 movie, from the 2002 G3K? I can't remember. The only M5 I remember was being driven by some kid.
LOVE your shop/ garage ! Super nicely stocked and you have everything to properly & SKILLFULLY complete what is needed.
Thanks for all the videos you upload! Long time fan and watching your process and techniques over the years has been awesome
oh man, the moment i saw the car i got taken back a few years. I'm a huge fan of the original gumball rallye movies with alex and the other crazy guys and seeing that this thing still lives put a big smile on my face. thank you, larry.
Wow Larry what an incredible job. I've saw this car up close at RADwood Philly and thought that the paint was toast. But you really brought it back to life. Keep up being awesome
Easily a $2500 job. Sick results
Detailing seems to fetch massive money in the USA. The same job in the UK would be £600-700. Maybe over £1000 if you ceramic coat.
The difference is the cost in labor
Note to self: Do not open detail shop in United Kingdom.
@@joshstabler3438 yeah its because the average salary is lower and so is inflation
@@idontlikecops1 Its not about what he did...its about the time it takes to do what he did. Its basic labor calculations.
That particular car is best left with dents and scratches even after a full detail as it keeps the identity of a Gumball car...lovely job on what you done there Larry
best detailer ever and your products are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@WhiteDetails if you want to see a perfectionist.
Larry is awesome and knows his stuff, but time and time again, he is a salesperson and thats why his channel is such a bombshell, he knows how to sell and present :)
Keep it up Larry.
TheDim3s nothing what he tells is new for @jimwhite!!
i wish i could work under him
10/10 video by Larry and Make Rain productions. Besides the awesome detailing, the camera work, production, and sound quality was 100% perfect.
Nice work. I always loved that E39! One of the best BMW's ever made.
I love these channels restoring cars either mechanical issue or just paint and interior....
I hate winter. Can't wait till spring detailing!!!!!
You're a dedicated detailer Larry, don't think I've ever seen icicles form on the sill like that during a car wash before.
This car means so much to a generation of BMW enthusiasts from the era (Late 2000's). I am glad Larry got the opportunity to detail it. I would love to see the seats restored with Leatherique rejuvenator as cracked BMW leather seems to react very nice to it.
Heard stories about this car, glad to see it's still around being used and driven!
I helped jump start this car in the underground car park in Paris (and a few others) at the start of the 2004 Gumball rally. There was a quite a few frantic people including Alex panicking they could not start their cars due to flat batteries. Very interesting to see all these wealthy people either not own a set of jump leads or have the cheapest/crappiest set you can buy. Luckily we had a proper set of leads with us!
More money than sense
@@flowersnaught9380 considering he managed to get across america and then get invited back by the fbi and google to talk about it, I'd say he had more sense than money
You missed a spot! Wow, the detail you put into everything is amazing, especially in your teaching, amazing
I really enjoy seeing your whole process from start to finish with explanation
great video , you put so much work into it and to only show like 20 minutes . I know how much you put into it , great work and great video .
You really restored the paint on that M5. Beautiful car with an amazing story!
I just watched this video and I just came from outside and that hot towel method worked great!! First time the decal was a bit stiff, second time I dipped it back in hot water and was coming off more, third time the razor blade just slid through underneath.
And this sticker was stuck on there for years!!!! Thanks!!!!
Another amazing paint restoration by you🤘
Night and day difference sir! Awesome video
I wish I could 3D print a Larry Kosilla of my own.
Thank you for this. I love this car, Alex is an interesting character that's the bimmer that turned me into a fanboy. Loved and watched every moment of its gumball recordings.
Watching this man work on all these cars is satisfying
Larry this is golden just discovered your channel and binge watching all of your videos ,from across the pond in Northern Ireland
Very well done. It's always so satisfying to see a Beautiful vehicle restored👌👍💯.
That wheel stand looks great!! Another great vid, Larry!
Am I the only person who ends up detailing there car every time Larry posts a video?
I always get motivated to detail after watching them too
Aaron Schmitt , yes, most people detail their car.
Aaron Schmitt Spent 2.5 hours cleaning my car the other day. Snowed all day today and its covered in salt again :(
no you're not haha
You are not alone. Except I usually end up just feeling guilty that I missed something.
As a german viewer the stickers on this legend are just hilarious. Awesome work on the car.
My dream car and my favourite detailer. Perfect.
Münchenautobahnpolizeijäger😂😂😂
If you are German, thats so funny. Makes absolutley no sense.
Munich Highway Police Hunter? Well that’s the words on their own by my own, admittedly, basic German knowledge . Bunched together (as lots of German words are, as in, they have 1 word for stuff that would be 3 in English ) probably gibberish!
@@0tispunkm3y3r Well, they kinda make sense, although it should say "Münchner Autobahnpolizeijäger" or something like that
@@0tispunkm3y3r Right, it is gibberish. There wouldn't be a "Jäger" in there (not even sure if it might say Autobahnpolizei München, afaik the Autobahnpolizei is part of the federal police and therefore not under supervision of a city)
The only cases of german authorities using Jäger in their name are the Feldjäger (military police), Gebirgsjäger (mountaineers) and Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers).
This word... just random nonsense.
StarSpangled She is part of the 16 federal state polices. Although the Autobahnpolizei for Munich in Bavaria is the Verkehrspolizeiinspektion Verkehrsüberwachung München. 👮♀️👮🚓Happy days!
"Autobahnpolizeijäger" does make sense though. "München" is a noun and does not make sense here. "Münchner", an adejctive, with a space between the "Münchner" and the "Autobahnpolizeijäger" would mean "Munich Highway patrol hunter".
I'm amazed the paint on that car even survived all the years of madness Alex Roy put it through, nice to see its still on the road.
Absolutely love your videos, I’m not a detailer but certainly like to keep my 2 cars clean and in tip top condition, more attention paid to my 2001 Audi TT. Your content is really inspiring and certainly helped me with a couple of tips. 👍
Excellent content there! Great tips great learning opportunities. The best detailing UA-cam channel.!
Awesome love videos like this. 50/50 after that first pass on the door alone was sweet!
this was amazing to watch ! Larry you are amazingly meticulous ! I like to work on my own car but I could not emulate this ! Well done.
I'm glad I saw it with the stickers while they were on. That being said, it's still THE M5 and looks damn good. Nice work.
Very cool car with some very interesting history. It's one of those things where the BMW M5 really was the perfect car for the job. Fast, yet very understated and not attention grabbing at all.
As a BMW Enthusiast i am looking forward to the upcoming film!
A 24 minutes AMMO vid is heaven
Nice work guys, never actually seen one of those running before. Keep it up! :)
hello, great job
!
that said then I allow myself a piece of advice, to recover the aspect of the rim bolts, I advise you to try to put the head of the screws upwards and not downwards, the product will have contact on the head visible at the outside (in your video the head has almost no contact with the head of the screw because it is in contact with the container). my humble opinion :)
Those little rubber 3M wheels are awesome! Used them to remove adhesive residue on a bunch of trucks and never had a problem with scratching, but you can heat the panel up real quick. It'll also make old foam tape turn into napalm that'll stick to you and burn so be careful.
Larry I’m very glad to see you’re wearing a mask for your safety and I hope this will set a good example in the detailing community for guys and girls that work with these products every day.
That wheel detailing wheel stand is sweet!
I remember when I first read the book about Roy's quest to beat the record, which was how I first heard of Richard Rawlings. I can only imagine the fun times that this car has seen.
I'm not going to check all 580 comments to see if I'm duplicating anything but I have a few ideas for future detailing exploits:
1. Hand/body oils- use Mother's VLR and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
2. Using an ODBII Memory saver you can disconnect the battery terminal, and work around the electronics with a little more peace of mind. The memory saver retains the on board computer memory.
3. Use detailing detailing gel inside the vents, cracks and hard to reach areas; especially around the electronics
All that being said, I absolutely love your content and delivery!
It would be pretty sick if Alex and Ed did an actual race across the US, both in their record breaking cars. Leaving at the same time and see who ends up at the finish first.
Larry, once again I admire your scrupulousness and dedication!
Awesome Work ! Completely cleaned and prepared. Really nice ! Thanks for posting.
Nice work Larry ! Perfect detail work
Insightful, and very great full for the content thanks from Houston Tx
My son and I met Alex at a car show in Boston years ago. The car was Filthy but looked awesome! Great Video but sad to see those decals go! Hopefully, someday he will re-create the look with the decals and you can keep it super clean for him!
What a great video Larry. Alex should be thrilled with his "new" car. Quite a transformation.
Alex is thrilled.
Wow...looks like a new car. As always you do, Great work!!!
Doesn’t Ed Bolian hold the record?
yes, he did it in 2013
Yes see comment below
sorry, but for me it doesn't count. all the planes and stuff. for next record lets close all the roads ;)
@@ElMosqito Why doesn't it count??
Yes, but Ed isn’t a hard core narcissist intent on clinging on to a glory which has passed by.
Great job!! Awesome storied car. A little free advice, if you don't know what a button activates don't push it!
Had the ignition power been ON, he could of accidentally fired off those rockets or shot a stream of oil from the rear end, who knows.
watching your videos is so informative that anyone could start a detailing studio afterwards
As someone that routinely removes old decals off retired fleet vehicles at work, this is very helpful
As a sign guy for over 20 years, there are so many better ways to remove glue than goo gone, and the angle of pulling the decals can make a massive difference in the amount of glue left behind. DM me Larry and we can chat. Maybe I can give you a tip or two haha since you have given us all so many.
I love the attention to detail man great job sir
i loved this episode. this car is a legend and reminds me of my childhood watching gumball on television
Informative video as usual Larry!!
That 3m wheel is a godsend. I used it to get off 3M body molding tape after I removed the sideskirts on my car to paint them.
Years ago, the company I worked for purchases a Mitsubishi Eclipse that had raced in the Targa Newfoundland from Mitsubishi Canada. The car was covered in sponsor stickers and graphics. We had our own plan for the car, so they needed to come off. Some of the really old adhesive wouldn’t dissolve with alcohol, Goo Gone, Windex it even lighter fluid (oh yeah, tried it!). A friend who does custom graphic wraps suggested a product called Rapid Remover. Totally amazing. Wiped off the glue like it was dust. Well worth checking out should the need arise again.
Larry - Love your videos and your products. Car turned out great (better than I thought possible). Somewhat surprised that Alex wanted all (almost all) the decals removed. To me at least, the decals added value and provenance to this very special car - but maybe that's just me
All the Decals can be added back. But yeah, it was sad to see them all removed.
The stickers will be back. When it's time.
I've had the honor of removing a bunch of old vinyl decals from cars, one being 30 years old. I got a can of goof off and saturated a micro fiber cloth then draped it over the glue spots for a minute or two. Made it much easier to remove remove the glue residue.
It's amazing the paint came out looking almost factory new, considering this M5 was thoroughly used and abused.
