    It’s not that difficult to decide which watches to bring with you…the hard part is deciding which ones to leave behind.

  • @SalBC62

    It is absolutely true. I spent three or four weeks deciding which watches I should take with me to Europe. I decided a formal one because I was attending a wedding in Spain, then a Casio because... well, it is always possible to be robbed while walking the cities and a Seiko GMT to keep track of the hour at home.

    This is a great system for picking travel watches! I tend to over think things and look at my schedule and try to figure out the best watches for whatever activities I'll be doing, but I think in 99% of the cases if you go for those three categories you'll be good.

    Anytime I go on holiday I just grab one watch and commit to it for the week. Too nervous to pack 3 in the case in case of loss. I tend to go for a GMT just for the novelty of actually having a use for it and usually a bright colour. This year I'm taking my pan am zodiac worldtimer.

    Went on a 6 day trip out of town and a red Kamasu on a strapcode jubilee covered all the bases. It works as a dressy piece, and as a casual one. It's also very comfortable to wear as an everyday watch.

    Helpful template. I guess subconsciously i have done similarly. But on my recent trip to Cancun I went more low price for security reasons. Same time zone so no GMT just a cheap San Martin SN036 diver, San Martin black dial Explorer homage and my G-shock 5610 radio/solar. Then a few days later on trip to Tennessee i took my Christopher Ward Trident Pro 300 and the G-shock as the CW diver can look pretty dressy.

    For business travel which is generally to Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines, my flying watch is the best World Timer on the planet. It doesn't beep going through security, it's lightweight and if I lose it, I won't cry, as it's the Casio Royale AE-1200...nothing beats it. A GMT pales in comparison. I also bring a dress watch for business and a diver for the evening. When I go on holidays for a few weeks, I bring lots of watches!

    Work watch - Seikp SRPE61
    Watch this week - Seiko SRPJ85

    I believe deciding which watches to take on vacation is the essence of having a watch collection. I look at all my timepieces and associate them with the adventure or situation it will serve me best. It's not just about where you're going, but the people and vibe when you get there. Anywhere near the water and my Citizen ProDiver is a must, but my second watch was different for trips to Hawaii, the Outer Banks, Block Island and Key West. Out of my time zone, I have to take a GMT. Sometimes I'll ditch the bracelets for a Nato or Tropical strap. An excellent point Shane, nothing that draws too much attention. I bought a Pepsi homage once and, even at $250, I'm not taking chances!
    I read a travel / watch article that said you should take only two watches max (one, if it's a 3-day weekend or less) and I've been able to stick with that (mostly!)

  • @Furniture121
    @Furniture121 Рік тому

    I agree 100% with the categories, they cover all the bases without being too specialized.
    I usually tended to take my Marathon Navigator(plastic), a CW C63 Sealander or C65 Dune, and my Marathon GSAR. In the future I'll be taking my C65 Dune, and my steel Navigator. The Dune can stand in as a dress watch when needed, and the Navigator is quartz and a GMT with the 12hr bezel.

    A lot of great travel watches to choose from.
    For me one of these three always needs to go with me (including when I went to Europe last year):
    ● Citizen Promaster Eco-drive Worldtime GMT
    ● San Martin BB Pro GMT with the NH34
    ● And/or my Casio Worldtime
    That said I always try to take 1) GMT (usually on my wrist) and a three watch watch roll that includes 2) a beater (usually G-shock or my Protrek) 3) a dress watch and 4) a wild card - often a diver.

    Very concise video! One thing you didn't mention, but a consideration for me was taking too nice a watch. Not because of security reasons, but more because I worry about just losing or misplacing it somewhere. So basically no watches it would be hard to replace.
    Just got back from Toronto. Took 3 watches (4 if you count the fitness tracker)
    Diver=Seiko SPB239,
    Field watch/grab & go= Citizen Eco-drive,
    Dressy Casual= Wise Adamascus Damascus.
    Didn't need a GMT and the Eco-drive canceled out the G-shock. Ended up not needing a dress watch, because Toronto has so many great street food places we were too stuffed by dinner to go to a nice restaurant 😅.

    Good on you for everything you're doing with that Garmin, Shane! (I don't run, but I get the motivational thing.) Late last year, I accompanied my wife on a month-long artist's residency she had in Chapala Lake, Mexico, and this was the first time I ever took more than one watch with me. (Last time out was Europe, where a Casio Edifice world-timer served me just fine all by itself.) This time out, I had a curiously above-average Seiko 5 dress-style watch (which I admittedly had been ignoring for some time), and a Casio ProTrek PRG 300 series which had all the ready-for-anything bonafides (world-timer, digital compass, triple sensor *et cetera* ) without all the G-Shock baggage. Know what the funny thing is? Other than the first few days in Chapala (highly recommended destination, BTW, just wonderful), it was the semi-dressy Seiko 5 that I wore for most of my stay, which I fell in love with all over again. Sometimes you never know how much you like a watch (or don't) until you take it with you someplace unfamiliar. However, last week, I got hold of a Seiko 5 Sports GMT, my first-ever GMT-complication watch. This might well be my solo go-to next time I board a plane to go anywhere.

Fantastic, neutral dial color, and goes well with a lot of strap color options. This watch covers a lot of bases. If you wanted to keep it to 3, then it'd be a diver/more rugged piece, and a (solar) quartz chrono.

    i have been using the Garmin Instinct 2S as my exercise watch. It is a smaller version without solar, it fits my smaller wrist better. You still only have to charge it occasionally, and the MIP screen is great. Looks a bit boring, though, so I tend to only wear it when I want to use its features.
    Other travel watches:
    G-Shock GM-S2100-3AJF, a smaller "Casioak" with a metal shroud for use in and around water, or when wearing an expensive watch is not a good idea. Has a positive digital display so you can actually read it.
    Grand Seiko SBGN013, a quartz GMT that does not draw attention to itself and can act as a dress watch on the right strap. Setting an automatic 'true' GMT after it runs out of power can be a bit of a pain, I prefer quartz GMTs for travel. 20mm drilled lugs make for easy strap changes as well.
    I prefer not to leave expensive watches in hotel rooms or mess with hotel safes, so most watches stay home.

    IMO, unless you are traveling for a really long time, like a month or more, you really don't need more than 2 watches. You need one watch that is versatile enough to get wet, so preferably something with 100m water resistance or better. And/or a really cheap watch that won't attract attention if you are worried about crime. So likely something older, or plastic.
    These days, I have so many of the former I would have a hard time choosing.
    Steinhart GMT, or Explorer. Hamilton Khaki King, though WR might be a reason not to take it. Seiko Alpinist. Nodus Sector. Jean Richard Highlands, . Zelos titanium diver, Seiko Turtle, or CW trident quartz. They all are tough enough to wear in water, except the Hamilton Khaki King, but look good enough to wear at night, with semiformal attire.
    If I wanted to just go cheap, maybe a old Citizen Ecodrive, Seiko titaniun quartz, Pagani design moonwatch knockoff, or Seiko SRPE.
    Finally if I was really worried, I have a cheap plastic quartz in my collection I never wear, but might make an exception.
