My Pentel Pencil set, Pentel GraphGear 1000, all came with the wires of the proper diameter, in the eraser. They would be the first step in clearing a jam; me thinks....

What a coincidence that I have the same pencil and it was jammed. This video did not help. My pencil was jammed at the tip. Incredible as it may seem, the lead had congealed into a rock hard mass at the exit hole. I managed to hack it out using a sewing needle. When I got an opening I cut off the eyelet on the needle which just happened to be about the same size as the lead (.7mm) and using that like a rifle cleaning rod I rammed it in and out of the hole. I cleaned it out and it works now but why did the lead congeal? I did keep it outside in a detached garage. I am sure the temperature exceeded 100 degrees at times but does pencil lead melt?

This reminded me that they used to stick a stiff, .5mm metal needle in the eraser so you could clear out the barrel when things did jam up. Haven’t seen those since the 80s.

The Pentel pens (pencils) that I used back in the 70's (as a computer programmer writing COBOL onto programming sheets with tiny little squares for each letter, to be keypunched into cards to be compiled.........but wait, I digress). The pens had a tiny steel pin attached to the backside of the eraser. The pin was the exact size of the lead and could be used to clear any jammed lead from the barrel. I haven't purchased one lately so don't know if a pin is still provided. I know they were useful.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  3 роки тому +1

Wow! I used to do the same thing back in the 70's - COBOL, punch cards, the whole deal. Turnaround from writing out those sheets, to when the cards got compiled and the results printed out took forever. And nowadays the compiler tells me when I make a syntax error while I'm typing, and there is almost no waiting while things get compiled. But I digress... 😂
It's possible there is still a pin, but I couldn't find it for my pencil. 😄

I have a Pentel GraphGear 1000 that was blocked, your vid helped me to unblock it.
For those with a similar problem.... If a piece of lead is stuck in the inner cone, you need a really thin needle to unblock it. Insert into the wide end making sure it is centred, then carefully press the eye end of the needle down on a solid surface until the lead starts to appear. Keep pressing until the lead falls out and the point of the needle shows. Then a small pair of pliers could be needed to remove the needle from the wide end (do not try to force the eye of the needle through the inner cone).
Repeat the above to make sure the inner cone is now free from blockages, reassemble and you should be good to go. I found that I had too many spare leads in the thing and couldn't get one to work its way down to the nib, but removing all but two or three solved that. Once the lead appeared I put the other spare leads back into the pencil and now it works as good as new, which it was way back in the late 1990's!

I have a very specific problem, and it’s that the push mechanism for my pencil isn’t fully working. I’ve tried everything, and it wasn’t until I compared this pencil (graphgear1000) to others of the same kind that I noticed the eraser part was sitting wrong in the pencil. I thought this was a problem with the piece itself, so I switched it with one from another pencil that was functional, but that piece sat weirdly too. (The result was the same when I switched the piece to a working pencil and it worked perfectly fine.) This is apparent with the sound too, instead of the usual clicking when pressing the top of the pencil, you hear sort of a hollow squeaking sound. I don’t know what to do, at this point I’m ready to give up.

Hold the top down, then you can probably push the lead back in. If not, click it until you can remove it, then put it back into the top.

Nice video Dan. Some humor to keep things in perspective helps.
If pencil works according to the video but your pencil doesn't work it could be metal tip where the lead comes out is jammed.
    To unjam:
    1) Get a wire long enough and strong enough to go through the tip and small enough to fit inside the tip.
    2) You can get such a wire from a twist-tie. (I've got a few dozen in a plastic bag in the kitchen junk drawer. SMILE) Find one that is straight at one end.
    3) Remove plastic with diagonal cutter pliers revealing the wire inside.
    4) Insert the wire into the tip from the outside (in the opposite direction of the way the lead comes out). Tip so wide part is towards floor and blocking junk falls out.
    6) If that doesn't work put wire into wide end and attempt to dislodge blocking lead from that direction.
I found 3rd time (1st into tip in opposite way lead travels, 2nd from wide part of tip and 3rd into tip again) dislodged blockage.
(Piece of lead around 1/8th of an inch came out but there was more blocking tip.)
    Good Luck!

I got it that far apart, and it still seemed jammed. Jaws weren't opening like they should. I took it apart MORE and now I can't get it back together. :( I have other graph gear in other diameter leads but I'm afraid to take one apart to see how to get it together. More coffee may help. It is a great video. User error on my part. I'll try again later.
