The Nordic countries do love their salty liqourice! In Iceland, we eat an unhealthy amount of it and it is sooooo delish! Our Swedish cousins are, as well, hardcore.
I’m a Swede married to an Icelandic woman. We eat an obscene amount of salty licorice in our household. But yeah, I feel that Icelanders and swedes are the masters of strong licorice in the world. With the Finns coming in second after our shared first place. Iceland has the best chocolate licorice though. The “Sterkar djúpur” ❤
As a Swede, I think the rest of the world is trolling when they say they don't enjoy licorice. Basically if you don't enjoy it I am not going to trust you.
The thing about salty liqourice is that its not acual table salt, but rather amoniumchloride (salmiak) wich is a sour salt composition - present in the product or dusted with it. It would appear the salmiak doesnt behave as actual salt with blood pressure, its rather the liqourice itself that affect blood pressure depending on the amount of Glycyrrhizin present in the product, and amount of candy consumed.
Chemistry is great… take two relatively lethal compounds, hydrochloric acid and ammonia, combine them the correct way and you get ammonium chloride… sal ammoniac…. It miiiihgt also be known as battery acid, please don’t drink battery acid…

I'm from Denmark and when they dished out the second liquorice I knew immediately that that was not cocoa powder but liquorice powder, because if there is a powdery substance on top of licorice in Scandinavia it is always licorice powder which is very concentrated with salmiak salt.

It's for the better as well if you dose it right. Both licorice and salt in too high quantities is bad for your blood pressure. My dad had to give up licorice (even sweet) completely about 20-25 years ago because his blood pressure was too high.
The white Svenskjävlar is something i will buy every so often from the local licorice shops and just eat throughout a day if it sits on my desk. They sell pure salmiak powder here in Sweden as well under a few brands that you can just eat like one might a powdered candy of some kind.
