Freelancing was the worst!! You have to be 100% "on", present and perfect. Sometimes, you "get to" drive for hourS (through terrible weather, too!) for the "privilege" of getting paid less than the tenured musicians, who were simply lucky to have won their jobs. No benefits. And the requirement to smile and nod at blatant rudeness, predatory assholes, and rampant egos. Glad I'm now a Senior Software Engineer. There are always issues in whichever profession one chooses, but at least I'm getting paid and am treated very fairly and respectfully for the skills I'm bringing to the table.

Thanks Maddie for your honest real life experience response. I remember when you started getting into coding and got a job and how us freelancers where like “you got out!” 😆 Very telling response. I also mentioned you (not by name) in another video of the story of when you came in to Lyric and friggin sightread Elektra at a performance (perfectly too) and then was never called again. The freelance world is harsh!

I definitely worked for them, again, but yeah...gigs dwindled for no obvious reason. I just recall the tenured musicians telling me "wow! I could have never done that!" and me thinking "you'll never HAVE to", and seething on the inside of how we are just put through the ringer, and have to be "perfect" all the frickin' time. It's unsustainable, and our skills as musicians ARE transferrable to other fields that are just as satisfying (if not more, sometimes!!!)@@hawaiiflute

Thanks for your response. As someone looking to get into freelancing as a musician, seeing your response is sobering and gives me things to think about
