Hi there! I have been a freelance flutist for a long time (in Portland, Dallas, Chicago, Milwaukee & Honolulu) playing in many different ensembles including community orchestras, professional band, musicials, opera orchestra, ballet orchestra and full time professional orchestras. I’ve done so many cool gigs like playing in a backup orchestra for The Who, playing an all John Williams concert with John Williams conducting, and playing both in the pit and backstage Banda at Lyric Opera of Chicago. I want to share the things I’ve learned along the way on how to stay in the « freelance game ». Music performance majors are taught mostly how to master their instrument & audition for a full time orchestra. Almost nothing is taught about the practical reality of freelancing- which is most likely what you’ll be doing in life as a musician.
Create something & make a space for yourself in the music world
After music school, most of us start freelancing. The most successful and long lasting freelancers also create something of their own to market and sell for another income stream.

Your 100% correct on auxiliary instruments.l
Cool!
Trills!!!!!, no pinky, got it. ;)
@@episnod lol, that’s the key:))) 😁
Also wanted to add to this as a freelancer who plays multiple winds! Even if you don’t have the means to buy an auxiliary instrument, do not hesitate to get in contact with fellow freelancers in the area; see if they have one they’d be willing to loan/rent out to you for the gig! This can also serve as a way to show that you are able to play these instruments/ are willing to play these instruments even if you can’t afford to buy one! Especially with how expensive instruments have gotten in the last few years this is an amazing excuse to get in touch with your fellow freelancers.
@@daincarandang7603 exactly. Always possible to borrow or rent an instrument from someone.
This can be somewhat Touchy. I'm a doubler my primary instrumental is saxophone. I can't tell you the number of times people would ask to borrow my bari sax. I usually said no. The people that got angry with me were not my friends. And I got three or four gigs that I would not have gotten if I had to said yes. It's kind of a touchy situation. What do you guys think?
@ I definitely get this. I have an alto flute and I get asked to either rent it out or borrow it all the time. Sometimes I do say no bc I don’t know or don’t trust the person who needs to use it. Totally the call of the owner of the instrument.
I would love the name of the modern flute techniques workshop. What a necessary resource for all of us!
@@jenniferreddick7837 Hi Jennifer! The workshop is called FluteXpansions. The flute player that created it is Shanna Pranaitas. I think she has a link to this on her FB page.
I wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos and valuable information about a freelance career. I am rather late to that game, but until I’m 6 feet under, I’m going for it! I was not a music major in college, but I was heavily involved in various school and community organizations. I moved across the country for grad school in a different field and didn’t pick up my flute for 25 years, until about four years ago. Live with the regret every single day! But now that I am trying to wind down my career and retire early from my day job in hopefully five more years (fingers crossed), music is where I want to focus my remaining viable career years. I do not expect to get an orchestral job by any means, but over the past four years, I have been working to network and get exposure to many different groups in the area in which I live (suburb of a major metropolitan city). I play in a community orchestra, flute choir, a summer band, several musicals a year, and have subbed with several other community groups in my area. My plan for differentiating myself is doubling on multiple instruments. I already play oboe, but I am learning saxophone, and soon clarinet. My favorite type of gig is pit orchestra, I love love love musicals and operas, so I know if I am able to double on multiple instruments, my chances of finding paying gigs are much higher. As well as chances of subbing in more prestigious local or regional orchestras on something other than flute.

@@kaylivelazquez7354 You’re welcome & good luck at NFA competition!
You know, there is something to being asked to be in a community orchestra as a freelancer. The people seem real, they want to be there, and it’s just a good time. While I support being a freelancer and making sure jobs are run well, (really shouldn’t have to hunt down our checks) there’s just a certain amount of “fun” in such groups.

I used to play guitar live and would naturally get nervous before a show. I read somewhere that bananas could help calm you down because they have natural beta blocker like minerals in them. People called me the banana man cos id throw down about 3 before I'd get on stage. It really did work though. Maybe beta blockers would have been better and more effective though.
@@chrisnewtownnsw Bananas definitely help. Esp with keeping mouth from going totally dry. Just wasn’t enough for me tho.
Hello! Thank you for the tip. Did you record the video on your phone? I have a question. When recording piccolo, is it best to play in a way that doesn’t make the listener’s ears too uncomfortable? So, is it better to play softer rather than going for the feeling of ff? And in the beginning, should the tonguing also be light?
@@Flutistyehbin I did record into my phone, and best to be 3 feet away from phone so not too piercing sounding. I just sit right on front of my phone and play, tho, as I don’t have the set up to be able to do it the other way. I think going for a feel of ff is good- just want to not over blow and get a wild, spitty sound. And yes, the tongue should be light
This is such a great tutorial... really fun. You sound terrific as always.

I play in a community orchestra, and it's demoralizing when you see full grown adults behave like children. I guess age does not equal emotional maturity
@@Titanandenceladus so true
It is crazy that people who have the high level positions have such low maturity/emotional intelligence.
That’s actually a C#. To play a D this is the keys to them LH3, LH4, TH, RH1, and RH2. Or also you can do the same fingerings just without the LH4 fingering. It could be either or.

@@jestemqiqi7647 I’ll never forget the look on the conductors face. 😆
It's always sad and a bit scary when someone is too flaky to be a musician...
Forget the theory’s, how good of a musician was he. You look like you’ve been playing long enough to know that musicians never get along anyway. John Nash was mentally ill but managed to come up with probable gaming theory. George Patton was nutty but was a decent poet and one of the greatest generals of his day. If Bach or Mozart were around today I’m not sure they wouldn’t have been labeled complete nuts. A lot of history is full of conspiracy theorists. Copernicus and his ridicules ideas about the sun being the center of the solar system. Or that Pythagoras guy who started a religion saying that you could talk to god using mathematics. I’d bet you consider yourself to be a non judgmental person. 🙄
That part is insane! Thankfully I'll never have to play it in amateur orchestra.
@@jimdunleavypiano haha! You’re safe! 😄
Fun fact - Louise Di Tullio who has over 1000 film credits as a principal flutist recording session musician in Los Angeles who has played for high-profile film composers including Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Lalo Schifrin and of course John Williams has said that score of Hook, which Louise still mentions as the most challenging music she has ever performed and sight read during her long career a studio musician. “John Williams always pushes the limit of his orchestra with every new score,” said Louise, “keeping his players on the edge while creating a great sense of excitement.”
@@JAG4488 love this fun fact!
