    Best part of the debate was Gladwell’s self-reflection on why he lost.

      I did look it up quite a while ago.
      His cluelessness shone through to me most in his failing to note during his analysis that one of the reasons that he fared badly was that he was supporting a position that wasn't true. He went on at length about how he could have performed better, never once reflecting on the idea that the world's best debater would have a difficult time defending that the world is flat. Malcolm's position was to defend a position with about the same credibility as the world being flat.

    I lost ALL respect for Malcolm Gladwell. I had seen/read his books and never seen him speak. Watching him speak was like seeing the twitter profile of a journalist, you go "holy crap, you look and act like THAT? Why did I ever trust your words." Him intentionally getting his opponents names wrong was straight out of highschool and unbecoming of any adult of repute.
    And his own follow up to the debate sealed it, not that anyone was surprised. He refused to grow, accept defeat, or change in any way. Instead, he dug in further to try and pretend to his followers that he won.

    Too few around today understand what happened to the media or when it happened. I am old so I know. It was the early 70s...I think 1972...when Roone Arledge had CBS put the news division under the entertainment division and made it be profitable. The other networks followed afterwards. Once you are worried about listing sponsors and your ratings, you can't tell bad stories about sponsors (hearing a lot about the vegan twins study on mainstream media lately and have you heard as much as you heard when the Egg Board published a study saying eggs don't raise cholesterol?) The negative predictions all came true. Add in consolidation of media and the mainstream becomes more profitable and less trustworthy.

      Rooney Arledge was the president and essentially the founder of ABC sports. He later used his considerable management skills to transform the ABC news division into a powerhouse on par with CBS and NBC. Through innovative sports and news production (wide world of sports, NFL Monday night football, world news tonight, nightline). Arledge put the entire ABC television network on the map. He also was the television executive who unleashed Howard Cosell on to an unsuspecting public.
      Yet, as I examine his career, it was ABC's coverage of the Olympics that changed television forever. Arledge was the executive in charge during 1972 Munich games massacre of the Israeli athletes. Arledge and his team's coverage of that event was truly exceptional.
      ABC was singularly effective in displaying to the television audience the human dimension of the athetes(the segments were called "up close and personal "). And that is especially true about promoting the athletes from the eastern bloc countries. Arledge doubled the size of the viewing audience by promoting sports women cared about. Coverage of Figure skating and women's gymnastics brought millions of female viewers to the Olympics. There is no way to overstate how visionary Roone Arledge's contributions were to television production.

    Peterson if you read this
    The only story that can defeat the maker of stories is the one the teller cannot say. Tell it Peterson. It begins with the word clemency. Cain sacrifices potential for the present but Abel sacrificed potential for the destination. Only the journey above both absent moments in time exists across time as judged by time the only judge of truth

    Gladwell's books, especially the earlier ones, always always injected racism against blacks into his arguments. His books were interesting, but the racial victimization tended to get in the way of his theses.

    I am someone firmly planted in the center so my ability to remain objective and reserved is quite capable, that being said, I just watched that debate, it was not one sided at all, in fact I would have given the win to Malcolm far more than Douglas or Matt. Michelle was not exceptionally strong and seemed a bit scatter brained at times but I think the Nay side argument was far more cogent.

    Kudos to Matt for admitting that Douglas Murray won the debate. Actually, I think Malcolm Gladwell won the debate... for the opposite side. Matt is not a good speaker, and certainly not a great debater, but he had help from both his debating partner, as well as his opponents.

    3:25 Sorry JP, I just can't support your defense of capitalism/corporatism. You claim capitalism has lifted X number of people out of poverty, but what put them there in the first place? And where in capitalism's doctrine is it stated to lift people out of poverty?

    • @TheJollyMisanthrope
      @TheJollyMisanthrope Місяць тому +1

      Capitalism and corporatism are not the same thing. Suggesting capitalism put poor people there in the first place is suggesting that they were all much better off financially before and then capitalism came in and wiped them out economically, which is not the case. Government intervention into the marketplace, along with corporate collusion with the state, has caused a lot of problems for those who are struggling financially. This however is the antithesis of capitalism, and is being done by design to make poor people reliant upon government "benevolence", thus working against their own best interests. This is where the race-baiting and anti-white rhetoric is useful in making people complacent as victims because they feel that it's impossible for them to advance in life financially. Which again, is not the case at all.
