Comparison: Rear Hitch Tire Carriers (Wilco, RIGd, Dirt Complex)

  • In this video, we do a candid comparison of the Wilco Offroad "Hitch Gate Solo" and the RIGd Supply "Ultraswing Multifit". To my surprise, the tire carrier by RIGd didn't totally mop the floor with the Wilco unit. The main issue I noticed was that there was an extrusion straight back that would greatly affect departure angle. A month after, I had the opportunity to visit Dirt Complex to test fit their "Trail Swing". Find out if it meets OR exceeds the competition!

    **Update** APRIL 17, 2022:
    *Dirt Complex Trail Swing: $1750.*
    *RIGd Ultraswing, price increase to $1600.*
    *Wilco Hitch gate Solo high clearance: $1068 w/o swinging hitch receiver, $1157 w/ swinging hitch receiver.*
    **Update** August 14, 2021: Price increases in effect for Wilco and RIGd
    **Update** April 20, 2021: 3 months have passed since the making of this video, so please note that the cost of these tire carriers have changed. I realize, changes in price and features may change, so I'll try to keep on top of them in this "Pinned Post". *Please read below!* Also note, any inaccurate or troll comments will be deleted from this pinned post. My observations below are objective based, but my opinions are subjective. I try to keep it as unbiased as possible.
    The *Wilco Hitchgate solo high clearance with the swinging hitch option* went for $906, then $997. Now it's $1157.
    -This is the original mass market swing out tire carrier! Which also means this is an earlier design! A pin is used to secure the swing out. Over time, metal on metal wears out and deforms. Many of my friends have experienced wobbling after a couple of years. Also, because of the pin hole design, this tire carrier is not easy to use, and requires two hand operation. This tire carrier was designed with enough foresight to incorporate an upward pitched angle of the hitch receiver. This makes for a minimal impact when off-road or driving up and down a steep driveway.
    -What I think they could improved: IMO, they could incorporate a latch system to address wobbling and ease of use. They by far have the lowest price point, but how much more would that push the price up?
    The *RIDg Ultraswing MultiFit* was $1300 but it has increased to $1400
    -This tire carrier was the first to incorporate a hitch receiver into the swing out. This allows for bikes and gear to swing out along with the tire! This means that you'll have easy access to your tailgate or rear hatch! This is absolutely game changing for people in the cycling/mountain biking community. Unfortunately, this tire carrier has a hitch receiver that goes straight back 6 inches! I can't think of many stock vehicles (even trucks) that wouldn't be affected by this adverse change to departure angle. This will be a deal breaker to many. This tire carrier is made of mild steel and uses industry standard components, BUT has an awesome stylish pressure latch to secure the swing out. When that latch puts pressure on the plastic pads, wobbling while offroad doesn't happen.
    -What I think they could improved: IMO, they just need to angle their rear hitch receiver upwards to not affect departure angle so much. This would be a good mid tier tire carrier.
    ***Disclaimer: I've had the opportunity to test out Dirt Complex's Trail Swing back in Mid February. I've been very impressed with this unit. Not only does it improve on the other two tire carriers, but it also offers unique quality of life and safety features. Dirt Complex offered to sponsor me at the end of March 2021 after I returned from a trip to Moab Utah and completed the 9 mile Fins N Things trail. There's alot of places a hitch will scrape there, and it passed the test! I was absolutely honored to accept and it was announced on my Instagram account on March 25th, 2021. Here's the post: instagram.com/p/CM2HQphgvV9/?
    I do not make any commission if you buy a Trail Swing! I do not benefit in any way if you buy one. Dirt Complex is just one of my "build supporters". For the record, I have turned down an actual paid sponsorship early on when I bought my vehicle because I did not believe in the product offered. I have one other build supporter, and that's Nolo Designs (no-lodesigns.com/)
    The DirtComplex Trail Swing was first introduced with a presale price of $1250. Sales are halted momentarily as they transition to a "Retail Business Structure". Dirt Comp retailers will sell them for about $1750. Also, note that the "accessory hitch" is an added bolt on feature (for carrying bikes), I'm not sure what the added cost would be, but we will see in the coming weeks.
    -This tire carrier features an upward pitch right out of the hitch receiver. This allows for a near uninterrupted departure angle (I tested this on the Fins N Things trail in my Honda SUV see the results here: instagram.com/p/CM2HQphgvV9/). It's made with style out of chromoly, which has higher strength than mild steel (Many race car roll cages are made of this stuff). This is the first mass produced swing out tire carrier to incorporate a spring operated auto stop feature which enhances ease of use and safety. The components of this tire carrier is more robust than the other offerings. The hinge bolt is twice as big at 1 inch diameter. The license plate holder is made of 3/16" steel plate and fully outlines the license plate, this means no more bent license plates from wind or water.
    -What I think could be improved: IMO, the cost is quite high for the average consumer. I understand this is due to higher quality materials and more features, but can a lower cost version made?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 роки тому +3

      I hear ya, and I wouldn’t spend even $800 to carry a spare tire, that’s exactly why I’ve kept my full size spare in my lockable roof top cargo carrier. It holds lots of camping gear too! BUT, the reason I’m willing to fork over the cash is because these things do “double duty”. With the hitch receiver built into the swingout. This means my mountains bikes will swing out of the way with one hand operation. Even the latch adds a layer of inconvenience, but with the functionality, I’m willing to pay.

    Dirt Complex is the only one that is built anything close to a real swingout steel offroad bumper.
    The cromo is a nice upgrade- much higher strength to weight, and they addressed some reinforcement at the hitch, because these are all big lever arms. Ideally a second bracket near the pin that bolted to the frame would be ideal.
    Wobbling is allowing destructive leverage. A lot of washboard and that amplifies the work load on a wobbling part.
    I'm shocked at the prices of the very simple and low manufacturing cost models. That feels like pure profit with no real engineering, but I don't know the market.

I didn’t know what chromoly tubing was, I didn’t know why they used a 1” bolt instead of a 1/2” bolt. They’re also very transparent about their carrier and the materials that are used. I hadn't even come across the dirt complex anywhere, so that's a good find. looks like it will be awesome for you guys with the subies' and other lower clearance crossovers with the step up. I am going with the RigD for the sole reason that Ive always got bikes too and having the tire, the bikes, and anything else I might have strapped on back there with one smooth motion was what I needed in my life. Great video. I built my own using a Yakima swing away with a Curt spare tire carrier. I used a dual hitch extension 7.5 in. rise to get the swing away up and back from the rear. A couple mods included cutting the swing away arm and adjustments to the Curt for proper fit. Total cost less than $400. The lower hitch mount can be used for my bike rack (or trailer). I have a Rig'd Ultraswing on my 4th Gen 4runner and have run a lot of “difficult” rated trails here in Colorado, I have slammed the Ultraswing a few times but it's held up extremely well other than a but of rock rash. My departure angles aren't that great to begin with but I'd rather hit the tire carrier than my bumper.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 роки тому +1

      For something like a 4runner, departure angle isn’t as important, but in vehicles like the Subaru Outback and Mitsubishi Outlander or any other crossover type vehicle where the hitch hangs low, departure angle is a big deal. Also trucks generally have a bad departure angle too. 4runners and Jeep Wranglers won’t have much of an issue. Thanks for stopping by to leave a comment and sharing your experience.

      Thanks for the kind words! I think on a vehicle like a Tundra or anything with a crazy amount of ground clearance, the RIGd’s lack of departure angle won’t be much of an issue. But there are plenty of crossover vehicles out there that don’t have good departure angles, and some of the more hardcore offroad guys can really benefit from an angled tow hitch receiver.

    I think you did a good job explaining the differences. They seem like a good option for people who maybe don’t want to do heavy modification to their vehicle or need the modularity. • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 роки тому +1

      Price point is definitely expensive. When bought my Passport I knew the only options for carrying a full size spare was the “roof” of the “hitch”. I opted for the roof because I wasn’t thrilled about the Wilco carrier being “pin” operated. The RIDg carrier was tantalizing because not only is it latch operated, but it has the super convenient hitch receiver built into the swing out. $1300 is freakin cray cray tho! Dirt comp presale is $1100 and after that the price will be $1250, but there’s way more value with the large 1 inch bolt (twice the size) and the best feature of all.... the auto stop! Talk about ease of use! I still think highly of RIGd. I don’t think they charge an unfair price, I just feel there’s more value with Wilco being $400 cheaper and Dirt Comp giving more value for around the same price.

    Another great video. We considered one of these for our GX but decided we’d just do a dual swing out bumper in a year or two. What are the steel bumper options with tire carrier for the Passport? With the way you continue to push the limits, perhaps that is the way to go for you, even if it is a custom option.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 роки тому +2

      There are zero options for a steel bumper for any of the Current Gen midsized Hondas. I’m really big on keeping my builds as light as possible. Even Adding this 65 lb. tire carrier had me a bit hesitant (I’m just picky like that). A steel bumper is around 250lbs. Each. My friend Daklakfoto has a GX470 with the two pinion, 8 inch rear diff and he blew it up on a trail. We were thinking all the added weight was part of the cause. He’s upgraded to the 4 pinion 8.2” diff from a FJ cruiser.
      So with all that said, I probably wouldn’t go with a metal bumper unless it was light enough weight. Maybe aluminum or tube 😃

      Word on the street is that the RIGd unit is made of unlisted low quality steel. The Dirt Comp unit’s materials are listed. Chromoly tubing and 3/16” steel plate. 1” bolt, which is twice the size. What I like about the RIGd unit is that sexy latch system 😃. I was going to go with the RIGd until I compared it to Wilco and saw how bad the departure angle was going to be. Dirt comp hit this genre of tire carrier out of the park with their unit. I hate chrome and I’ll be painting the latch, but nice it’s rated for twice the weight. Now that I know what I know, it seems RIGd is a little sneaky with their marketing. They list a 10K towing capacity, and have that big yellow sticker on the receiver tongue, but on their website they state that the vehicles towing capacity is halved when the hitch receiver is extended. This means my 5000 lb. towing capacity gets dropped to 2500 lbs. the only vehicle that will get close to the 10,000 tow rating of the hitch carrier will be a heavy duty 3/4 ton truck. The biggest issue is how low the carrier hangs.

      The light has a positive and negative lead. I borrowed the tire carrier for a weekend for testing, so we just connected the leads to a 9V battery. There are trailer harness kits you can use to power the lights. The guy with white Mitsubishi Outlander GT wired up his RIGd that way.
      On the Dirt Comp unit, you can see a grommet where you can run the wire through. Also, the tire carrier has many holes and slots to zip tie the wire down. That’s another thing I like about it. You don’t need an extra bracket to attach things (like rotopax or tables).
      As far as the back up camera. There is no wiring harness extension available. I reached out to Honda a year ago and they said the camera and wiring harness is “proprietary”😣. While I can see the corners and directly below, most of the view is blocked by the camera.

The added weight in the rear will lead to more butt sag. On a Subaru, a tire carrier will make the rear sag a good 1/4” to 1/2”. You can counter it with overload springs. Yep! It‘s crazy how much wind drag there is on a cargo basket with a tire! A box is the way to go! Plus you’ll get extra “lockable” storage. A Thule force is a good choice! Just get one that fits your tire, and think about if you want to go with a little larger tire in the future. 28.5” is a common size for Crosstrek.

      I don’t own the tire carrier yet. But when I tested it for a weekend, the tire carrier definitely blocks much of the view. I can see the corners and directly below, but not in a straight line behind. I actually relied on my back up camera to get through some really sketchy offroad situations, so I’m really hoping I can relocate it.
      The Honda back up cams are high definition and really awesome, if I had a Toyota back up cam, I really wouldn’t care, I’d just replace it with a cheap $40 back up cam that would be an upgrade 🤣. But.... about a year ago, I was already thinking of a tire carrier ( I was planning to go RIGd) so I took my hatch apart to take a look at the Harness. I remember seeing 6 to 8 wires!!!!! Some of the wires are thicker than others.... I even contacted Honda if they had a wire harness extension and they responded back saying the harness is proprietary. I may just have to go with an aftermarket solution.
      For daily driving use, I didn’t haven’t had issues. I forgot how much visibility I have Looking behind my shoulder.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 роки тому +2

      I have a 32” tire connected to my dirt comp trail swing that weights 72 lbs. I think the heavier the tire, the more oscillation you may have. There are actually a lot of factors that will go into why a tire carrier will oscillate: short wheel base, stiff suspension, etc. I think what you’re experiencing with your RIGd tire carrier is wear and tear. When you first got it, it didn’t rattle and oscillate right? The materials they use is mild steel, the DirtCom unit is make of Chromoly tubing which has a higher modulus for elasticity, which spreads the load of force better. Wear and tear is eventually inevitable and currently I think the trailswing is the only mass produced tire carrier with replaceable parts. Anyways, in no expert, so you could always hit up AJ or Harrison at DirtComp. If you do decide to go the DirtCom route, I have a discount you can use “JONDZ5”.

      If Thule makes something comparable that would be a better option. I had Yakima snowboard pods fail on me, and our $1000 snowboards got littered across the 405 freeway.
      These things won’t be rated for off-road though. The tire carriers in this video will.

      You can secure anything with a lockable hitch pin. They vary from simple designs to more robust designs. Of course someone can always take a cordless angle grinder to the pin, but even if someone is brazen enough to take the time to loudly grind the pin out, my whole setup is 165 lbs! and the average thief will be too lazy to handle that much weight.

      RIGd now would be a no go for me, because how if affects departure angle. Even it was free, I couldn’t run it.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

      The Kuat Pivot v2 is $398 and does not have a tire adapter. It's an accessory for the NV 2.0 or any of the other Kuat Bike racks. There's a reason why they don't make a tire carrier adapter, and their setup, even with 25 lbs. mountain bikes, will fall apart on an actual trail or washboard dirt road. Kuat is made for onroad use.

    $2222.00 for the Dirt Complex Trail Swing puts it out of contention...for the $$$ the RIGd is the best value...

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 роки тому +1

      The Dirt complex trail swing was going for $1100 at the time I did this comparison. The $2222 price is temporary as they transition to a retail business model, which will be sold by retailers for about $1750. The issue with the RIGd tire carrier is the departure angle, which makes an otherwise good tire carrier a “No go” for a lot of people.

    • @wipatriot510
      @wipatriot510 3 роки тому

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring, The "departure angle" isn't enough to justify the cost difference...for the additional $500, you could either fab up a skid plate, or take it to a fab shop and have it modified to your spec, and come away with a carrier that is superior to both...there's always give and take, and considering that the RIGd is a better unit to begin with, I'd take the slight hit on the "departure angle", the other alternative is to install a lift...

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 роки тому +2

      I’ve seen both tire carriers. I’ve seen the insides, I’ve seen what they’re made of. The RIGd tire carrier is made of “mild steel” and is the same thickness as the “Chromoly” tubing in the Dirtcomp unit. By the way, chromoly is what race car roll cages are made of, it’s expensive stuff. 1/2” bolt vs. 1” bolt. Fully enclosed license plate holder made of 3/16” steel vs. none. Auto stop mechanism vs. none. Serviceable ball bearing vs. one that can’t be changed out. RIGd is even missing a “collar” on the hitch receiver! So, besides the latch and handle, Where is RIGd better? Why aren’t you mentioning Wilco? Do you work for RIGd? You’ve already left 4 random comments on this video 🤣. The Wilco Hitch Gate solo with the hitch swing option is $997. Their price went up from $905 when I made this video. RIGd use to be $1060 but now they’re $1300. That was the pricing before steel price increases. Don’t be surprised if RIGd’s prices go up as well. The fact of the matter is all these tire carriers 1.) cost a lot of money 2.) take up space in the rear and make everyday life inconvenient by adding more steps to opening a rear hatch or tailgate. Regarding ease of use, and quality of materials, you now get what you pay for. Those that took advantage of the $1100 presale on the Dirt Comp trail swing, congratulations!
      By the way, If you want a cost effective way of carrying a spare tire, you can do what I did for 2 years and keep it up top in a cargo carrier ($300-700) or roof basket ($150).
