In this review of Wilco Offroad Tire Carrier I show you how it is installed and works as well as go through all the nuances of having a hitch mount system and off road wear and tear after time.
There are of course options for steel or aluminum bumpers with ultraswing system instead of tiregate setup but that usually means 2-3 times the prices, especially if it is for full size truck, since everything for full size trucks costs almost double compare to jeeps or mid size trucks or 4runners or Tacomas.
When you go 37 or possibly even 35 inch tire size on your truck then spare tire will not fit under the bed of the truck and spare tire carrier of some kind or tire rack is required. For lower budgets Wilco Tire Carrier is still good option but you have to insure to do regular maintenance of tightening parts to insure longevity.

They actually never replied to me 2nd time so i just abandoned. But was about to go 35s and with new custom roof at that time i didnt need it anymore anyway, just more stufff bouncing in the back. 35s solved it to go into stock location under

My swingout hitchgate on my 2500 Ram Power Wagon wobbles but I am installing the 2.5" inset. I do recall Wilco saying to retighten wedge bolt every month. Cool truck.

I manage to jury rig a back up camera, and also found out the best way to tighten down these hitch. Gates is with a cross lug wrench. You can get it real tight then.

Have you checked out the bumper/tire carrier from AEV? They make them for the Dodge Ram and I've heard that they are awesome. Also Expedition One makes one also.
I havent checked AEV stuff. Couple years ago AEV didnt have 1500 bumper yet. Expedition one i know off but they dont make 1500 bumpers yet plus weight in general is more for bumpers. Eric on this weekend's trip had expedition one bumper on 1500 but thats coz he modified it to fit. Unfortunately no rig interview video of him. Maybe next time. Just circumstances didnt align to do one yet again
Thanks for sharing. I'll be able to make a more informed decision whether or not to buy it for my 4runner (bumpers are a little outside my budget right now)
Keep in mind that it was truck version not other ones. Also had same thing with money vs full on bumper but also weight too. Thankfully im fullsize truck plus switched down to 35inch tires no longer needing tire carrier anyway and was able to relocate everything to the roof thst i had on tire carrier
Grade 8 hardware could help. Along with removing the entire hitch and mount the one half of the carrier to the hitch using all hardware required then install hitch back in. The top bolts on the stabilizer ring are needed to keep the carrier from failing.
Well the good thing is i switched to 35s since then for various reasons including carrier. Now without one im not missing one. So good to not have to deal with swingout and just quickly pop tailgate and have native rear camera back for parking. You need an extra long socket extension to get to the bolt head to tighten up the wedge lock. The think is heavy and you need two people to put it on the vehicle. If the tire is on it then you need three people to install it. Current cost is over $1000.

Sorry to see it broken.... bu I have the same mount, but centered. Ive had it for +3yrs and seems still ok. I think part of the wear is probably due to the offset mount+weight. You can use a hitch wedgelock to get it secured
In video i have hitch lock to prevent wobbles. Its maybe anount of riding i did in 3 years with it which was a lot of bumping. You could be right about centered version vs not. But my version was done for heavier load, was listed as truck version

Hey what kind of hitch tightener is that you have there? I have never seen one like that with all the bolts but im sure it will work better than the cheaper versions i see with a rectangle U bolt.

Thats old video now. Well it was a bit tough with it. No swing out had to be almost fully open to open canopy lid

i installed one on top of roofrack. i dont have tire carrier anymore coz it broke, but also i switched down to 35s that fit under anyways. top real camera still serves great, i use it really as rear view mirror

Tie it into the frame on the outer ends, it will never go anywhere.
Would be an option if they send me that bottom half be it some price of free but they went silent on me after first reply. The swing bracket was also widened now. But im about to switch to 35s this friday and good chances it will fit under truck bed then i can relocate fuel packs to roof for big trips. Trying to find cheapest solutions here
It's 750lb tow tongue weight, but only 250lb actual carry weight. You're expecting too much for this system.
Lets do calculations more preciely then. 81lb exactly is weight of my tires. Let say 40lb is wheel which highly doubt its that heavy. 120lb. Then add 3 rotopax filled 4 gallons each. Thats 100lb. So its now 220lb. Add fabrication pieces weight at maybe 10lb tops. We have 230lb total. Throw some garbage in treasheoo like lets say 10lb. Still 240lb total with padded lbs.
@@Gear_Into_Adventure I agree with you. But that is also static weight. I don't think wilco really knows what the weight rating is when you're offroading. my guess would be somewhere around 100lb, something like a 33" wheel and tire combo. This hitch receiver carrier is the unfortunate creation of way overpriced overlanding bumpers.
Thats false advertising then coz that tire carrier said to be fine with 40inch tire even and was on pics. Well im not missing it. Things relocated to my bulletproof roof now and its pleasure to have native rear camera back as well as no extra bouncing. I switched down to 35s so soare fit under bed and no need for carrier now
More custom work to toughen this thing up I see. Looks like Wilco isn't all they're cracked up to be. After all is said and done, for my applications I'n gonna have a roof rack anyway. Really seems this thing was under engineered, or meant for the 'every now and then' off road excursions as opposed to constant abuse, or even just a daily.
I think one i had is now slightly outdated design.
@@Gear_Into_Adventure true, but I did find one guy who put an extra clamp on the joint by the pin to kill the rattle on the new one. That and he had to get a beefy bolt to hold it in the hitch tighter. Wilco may be making these for multiple vehicles, but last I checked, tow hitches come standardized lol
