    I just got one of the new chests pack kits for Christmas. I had used the the Umpqua 1200 cu.in. sling pack for about 3 years and then tried the Fish Pond Summit last year. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Being a Diabetic, I like to have the ability to carry extra food and supplies for that. The Umpqua sling pack was real good for that and the Fish Pond was limited as far as a long day went. I saw Lance using the chest pack in a couple of videos and it seemed like it would work even better for me. With the backpack and chest pack, I have enough room for what I need and it keeps higher off the water. Only used it twice but am impressed with it. You didn't mention the front bottom tippet holder that comes with it. Like on the old sling pack, it is an elastic/bungee cord with a plastic clip/lock so you can slide the cord through your tippet spools and clip the cord to the "lock". I found that taking a round plastic pen and removing the tip and ink reservoir then cutting it to size and sliding the cord through that really makes a nice smooth turning tippet holder. What C&F fly box are you two using and are you adding Velcro to the back of it?

    I have the zs2 and when the middle pocket is full, the front pocket is pretty much useless. You may be able to fit an extra spool of tippet, maybe two and some leaders but that’s about it. The fishpond cross current is a way better setup up front. However, the Molly system in the rear for the water bottle holder makes this pack better. I like the design theory for the himostats on this pack to keep them tucked out of the way, but it’s somewhat cumbersome manipulating behind the Molly strap. I’ve tried everything (chest, hip, sling, vest, and backpack) and while this is close, the holy grail is still out there imo

    I purposely got a small chest-pack to force me to minimize what I carry. Found I was wasting too much fishing time looking through all the fly boxes then 90% of the time I would chose something from my "favorites box" anyway LOL! Having a "favorites box" for each species helps me keep things simple - don't need to carry pike streamers to the trout creeks. Might be an interesting video to see what flies you guys carry and what water you use them in.

    I got one of these. The problem is that the folks at Umpqua apparently don't know how a mollie system works. The tab should be long enough to weave in and out of multiple slits. They made it just long enough to fit through only one slit.

    I'm done with my sling...I want a work station nice and close right in front of me. I was looking at the Fishponds with the flip down work station but this Umpqua looks like the one to get. How are you attaching those C&F boxes on this, just with Velcro? On a side note, I'm surprised at how many chest packs don't have closeable flip down workstations.

  • @jp410
    @jp410 4 роки тому

    Cheech, I noticed you have the net retractor attached to the upper webbing-style loop in back, and not to the plastic triangular clip that dangles further down. I tried the plastic one, but my net hung too low, almost behind my thighs and knees. A no-go. Then I discovered that higher loop. Any use for that plastic clip? I assume it's for a net, but it's so low, I'm not sure how it's supposed to work.
    Also, a separate thing -- you know those spring-loaded, plastic headphone clips? You have one attached to your shirt in the video, for the mic. I've found that they can be fixed securely on the zipper pull cords. I only use one of the dual zippers on each pocket to open and close it (i.e., when the pockets are closed, all zipper pulls are near my left shoulder, like yours are). So for the two pull cords I don't use, I've attached one of those headphone cord clips on each, and they're great as a third hand (or fourth hand, when my mouth is already holding something!). The only thing is you have to find a clip with tight enough spring tension so things don't fall out of it. They're great for an indicator, a piece of tippet, or whatever.
    Thanks for this great video! And also for the my-shirt's-on-backwards pack flip. It hadn't occurred to me, so I was taking the whole pack off to access the back.

    • @FlyFishFood

    I do wish I could remove the net holder on the back (of the new version). Seems a silly thing that they hard-wired it in there, since people have vastly different preferences with net carrying, and probably a minority will ever use that. Any ideas? Thanks again you guys for a great video.

      We use a retractor without much hang up for the net holder. It’s actually a big deal among guides and other people that fish with a long handled net. I haven’t had any issues with it being there even though I don’t use it.

      I attached a C&F box to the smaller Rock Creek chest pack. The foam patch has a nice design, it has wings on the side that tuck into 2 zero sweep pockets so that the Velcro won’t peel off if the corner is caught. It’s very well designed and secure. So in my case, I wanted to retain the velcro panel and attach it to the C&F box. I removed most of the foam with a razor blade and then epoxied it to the back of the C&F box. The box is locked in place with a solid Velcro connection now and the safety pin on the back is pinned as an added layer of security. Great set up.
