Spoiler...Paddington is the protagonist in Tenet
I knew it
"I ordered my marmalade an hour ago"
I've never realised the parallels between this ending and the ending of Titanic - all the main cast are there, they applaud and the protagonist is greeted with the character they MOST want to see.
Jack showing the Paddington 2 ending and I already started crying.
*reads title*
Me: Jack, please. No
Got to give some massive respect to Surfshark for continually sponsoring Jack!
Honestly bless them
@@JackHoward bless
I remember you tweeting about this, I hated it then and I hate it now. Giving you a hard stare through the computer right now Mr Howard!
not even seen any of the Paddington movies and I cried during that clip hahaha
And now you've seen them both?
Thank you for talking about interpretation (also Paddington) because I went on a big Instagram rant the other day about this topic. I am so tired of artists saying "that's not what it means" and then fans gatekeeping interpretation. A youtuber I follow did a dance with her husband to a song that she perceived to be a love song and people were so angry at her because the artist had written it about something incredibly sad in his life. So she apologised and took it down. I wish she hasn't because once you have made your art public, it is not yours to own the interpretation of anymore and as artists we must understand and accept that. And I wish more people would open this conversation with their fans.
But hey, that’s just a theory. A film theory
aaand cut
Yes you could read the ending that way, if you're a psycho
NO I LOVED THIS MOVIE PLEASE DONT DO THIS TO ME
edit: nevermind he liked it :)
EDIT 2: OMG THIS IS SO MUCH WORSE
HAHAHAHA
6:45
oh God! Have you seen "They guy who didn't like musical"? I have strong feeling about the ending and when I told my friends about my view on the ending. They told me thay I'm a sadistic person for wanting the Protagonist to be in a constant state of agony.
Knuckles Mcginty is hands down my Fav character hands down, really hope he has a big part in Paddington 3
I would like a series of Jack’s Hottest Takes, and the next video can be about that time BB8 threatens Finn.
*See’s Title*
Me: No, No. That’s Impossible!!!
I mean, the Home for Retired Bears point falls a bit flat, when you remember that they were pretty overt in the first few minutes of the first film that Uncle Pastuzo died in the earthquake, so death is not a foreign concept to Paddington.
if you watch this video backward all jack does is talk about tenet.
Paddington 2 is better then the first one. It's so rare for a sequel to be good, but for it to be _better_ is almost unheard of.
really enjoyed this 'paddington 2 ending EXPLAINED' video
NOOOOOOOOO
This would break me if I didn’t remember that a third one was coming out
Me doing a double take upon learning Simon Farnaby wrote Paddington 2.
Oh yes! I may be wrong but some of the other horrible histories gang wrote the first one too :)
Twist Jack is secretly the villain of Paddington 3 which is happening right now in real time. Paddington will defeat you! As long as we all believe he's alive. The power of friendship will never die!!!!
They announced Paddington 3 though... Will that all be a fantasy too?
Takes place in the matrix after the machines have taken over. 😄
Irrelevant but I just saw Palm Springs and it was delightful thank u, the dinosaurs at the end made me cry
the most sadistic video i’ve ever seen on youtube
the end of inception is the first time Dicaprio is awake
Ooft LOVELY
So glad you changed the title! So funny that it was unintentional but I was legitimately too scared to watch this
Thrilled to find out that there is finally something good to watch on Australian Netflix.
I started tearing up the moment you described Paddington opening the door to Aunt Lucy...
While I disagree with your theory (Paddington's Uncle died at the beginning of the first film and they didn't shy away from that, not to mention that this is a film about a talking bear so I think it's believable that he could hold his breath that long), I massively agree with your main point! I really love the way art provides opportunity for totally unique interpretation. I think music is a great example, because often people will explicate music around their own personal experiences, so the same piece of music can mean something entirely different to different people.
I HAVENT SEEN ANY OF THE PADDINGTON MOVIES BUT IM CRYING JUST AT THE FIRST FEW SECONDS OF THE CLIP AHHHHH
Okay Jack, I see you teasing us with your upcoming project w/ Dodie....AHHH I'm so pumped for it already!!!
As a precious summer child, way back when. I remember watching A.I and believing that the future robots really did resurrect David's mother for one beautiful day so that he could say goodbye - then go on to live the rest of his life with them.
...Rather than what really happened is that they fed him a lovely dream before switching him off... like a toaster. 😨😰😭
When you said you were going to talk about the ending I thought you meant the Hugh grant prison musical
Thank you Jack, glad someone else thought the same. I wrote about this for a uni film analysis a couple years back and got flak from peers.
i just cried from seeing those clips alone shsjdjfj
By the way, Paddington 2 is no longer available in Australia, but can find it on Netflix South Korea now.
I don't think I've started crying so quickly
i just cried again
I remember when you tweeted this and ruined my day. Now twice!
I think that's probably why Inception is one of my faves (basic I know), because anytime I watch a new video essay on it I'm learning about a new theory/interpretation.
I hate that I love this video so much
paddington 2 is a searing critique of toxic masculinity, institutional racism and the criminal justice system. no, I will not be taking questions at this time.
Agreed
Is the woman on the rigny at 3:14 the author in Library in Jack and Dean of All Trades?
She absolutely is. Great spot!
I always think that the various ways that people like to interpret An Inspector Calls is very interesting...
this was lovely brain food, thanks jack xx
Wow, what an interesting take! Paddington 2 makes me cry anyway and this is now the same tears but in a different way ahah
Duck me I sobbed just at that clip
Thanks
I interpret the video game little nightmares slightly different to what other people see it as. I strangely relate to it a lot. In my mind 6 (the main character) is just a normal child but she's got really bad anxiety from an unexplained past. Why I think she's anxious us because the proportions of the whole game are really off. You will have a really high table next to a 6-sized toilet and this is international within the game as 6 herself is supposed to be around 8-12 inches tall and I think this is a metaphor for her feeling small and insignificant. Especially compared to all of the horrible monster things that she comes across. Speaking of. I think all the weird humanoid creatures she encounters are just people in her everyday life that scare her because of their profession or because they're a bit different. You have the blind short yet lanky dude then you have the twin chefs (twins scare a lot of people) who are VERY overweight and to a child with anxiety who may not be used to/is scared of everything this would be terrifying. Especially as we don't know her past. Okay none of this is really making sense (I'm dyslexic) and I can't be arsed to type anymore so in summary I think 6 is just a normal little girl with a bunch of mental health issues and were seeing life from her perspective in her reality as opposed to actuality within the games universe and j can relate to her viewpoint and her as a character. Take of that nonsense what you will sorry for wasting your time 😂
I love you jack i really do- watched all the tenet videos, listen to the kermode on film podcast- really in ur corner. however I've just had to pause this because this is the line i will not allow to be crossed. my guy survived moving from southern america, flooding a house, almost falling down a chimney of fire, evil nicole kidman, wrongly being incarcerated- he's a bear against all odds, and this just proves it again. Lovely review at the beginning however i will not be watching any further- he survives it the same way he allowed inmates to be read bedtime stories and permanently wear pink. It's his lucky bear charm, I would have believed u more if you told me paddington is an allegory for the bible than him being dead. will still give a thumbs up, will still be watching, u r amazing, never change- just never bring this up pls xxx
Oh YEAH the parallels between the Toy Story 3 and Paddington! Hadn’t noticed that before, but I hope that’s the conversation the writers had too.
Paddington 3: The Haunting
audibly said 'absolutely fuck off Jack' and I had a point
Damn, Jacks really padding(ton) this video out isn’t he.
Hope it doesn’t get unBEARable
Haven’t seen the movies so I’ll have to Paws the video and come back later.
This comment is what I came here for.
U
there's a song by mal blum called "see me" which ive kind of like. headcannoned to be about a ghost ! it sounds like, at least to me, a ghost that has to come to terms with the fact that they'll never see their loved ones again, but then realises they never really cared about them in the first place ! there's a lot in the lyrics that could be interpreted this way although i don't think that's what the song's about - there's a lyric about being in the bath that could allude to them drowning - i just find it interesting!!
JACK HOWARD HOW AM I CRYING MORE
edit: i may or may not have watched the whole video now and i forgive you. maybe i should have waited a little.
That makes a lot of sense
Why did I decide to watch this video Jack.
my heart=broken forever
this video did in fact not enter my subscription box, just letting ya know. only seeing it bc of your most recent video about the new podcast!
Paddington 2 is the Lost ending we deserve
I still love the strangely specific percent deals.
Bloody hell Jack
I haven't seen either movie but I've heard great things
After watching the short film that came out a couple Christmases ago, I fully believe that "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" is the kid trying to rationalise the mum having an affair - I'm yet to convince anyone else.
This has "the curtains were green" vibes
Actually, that's exactly how I interpereted the ending too. Adding to what you said, the lighting in the entire ending scene indicates that along with how the film ends as soon at they hug. I also didn't know that there would be a third film, but Zombie Paddington sounds intriguing! :D
When I was a kid and read the books I always assumed aunt Lucy was dead but Paddington was either in denial or really didn’t know. Me and my sisters were so shocked when she was clearly alive in the movies
The creators being inspired by Toy Story 3 is a valid judgement. Yet I actually see more parallels in the P2 scene with the ending of Lynne Ramsay's Ratcatcher! All three are most certainly hard hitting tearjerkers and now they're all playing out in my head at once. Thanks Jack :'(
I watched Paddington 2 for the first time the other day because I wanted to be able to finish this video with no spoilers.
Hey Jack, will you make a breakdown of your vision of your video with Dodie like you did with the other music videos you made? (assuming probably incorrectly that it is a music video) or will you leave it as you know... the message of different interpretations.
I agree. The fact that a work can be interpreted in a myriad of ways shows how well thought out it is. I have one.. Not a film, but this is my interpretation of 1960's TV series The Prisoner- I think it's all about identity, and the stripping away of identity. For those who don't know, the series is about a secret agent who resigns his job and gets kidnapped and taken to this weird village. Absolutely EVERYTHING that gives something an identity is missing from this series. In the village, and the series, identity is virtually meaningless. All the characters, even the protagonist, are only ever known by their number. There are no names given. We never even learn what his job was or why he resigned. Who the villains are is never revealed. The village, despite being a really unique looking place, has no name or location. The big bad, Number 1 is... Well even at the end of the series you're left without a proper answer. And there's lots of stuff about individuality and free will and fighting to be ourselves, fighting for our identity in there as well.
I think it's weird how many movies have this exact theory about them. Dark Knight Rises, Mass Effect 3, Joker, Fight Club and basically every other movie with a dramatic climax and a happy ending.
That's why I don't believe this theory about any movie, unless the film tells me that is what happened.
But I like that you are still hung up on Tenet, I talked about it for four hours with two guys who did not see the movie on discord last week.
Everything great about Tenet dropped and he pointed out that the death near the end breaks the movies rules and it drives me mad now.
Not many numbers in tonights Tenet Bingo, but I like the hot take. Going for a re-watch.
I once wrote a Zombie version of the Gummi Bears theme song, I'd love to see Zombie Paddington :) but maybe just as a fan made film, the movies are just way to good and wholesome, so I'm also really excited about the P3 that they are probably going to make...just a perfect example that you can make amazing movies for families
I'm totally on board with the similar reading of the final episode of Breaking Bad.
i.e. that Walt died in the penultimate episode and what follows is the wish fulfillment fever dream of a sad broken dying man flashing through his mind in his final moments.
Did you enjoy I'm Thinking of Ending Things? I spent a few hrs discussing interpretations with people afterwards and I feel like that was half the fun
But that's just a theory
A FILM THEORY
Can't lie, that was my original thought about the end of Paddington 2...but then i am cynical
This is a great theory and if this is intended I think it's even more great.
i interpret this video as Jack being unable to make a video without mentioning tenet.
True
Is tenet becoming for jack what the exorcist is for mark? I mean he doesn’t love it quite that much I imagine. But he does like to bring it up a lot.
Give it 20 years and we'll see
JACK NO DON’T DO THIS TO ME
will you make a video about Cherry?
The number of 'family' films where I am sure that the happy ending is supposed to be a fantasy is...
Many.
Nemo is crushed in the escape from the net; Croods Dad burns and dies and his family move on without him.
Alador, lemurs and all die deliriously in the cave... and all the others.
I had the same thought when I saw this movie! Honestly i know for cinematic sequel purposes the production companies obviously are gonna make him live for a 3rd film. But I can’t disagree with you, the entire way it is set up and shot. how it chooses to have him fade out and wake up with everyone he’s ever loved surrounded by warmth and offset by the light snow outside. It could be the coziest happy ending... or the most bittersweet way of showing his death
Excited for the new one tho lol
I read the title and I couldn’t click the notification quick enough lmao
Ok hold on, just watched the video.
FUCK OFF WITH THAT NONSENSE. It’s a happy ending you can’t just let a happy ending be a HAPPY ENDING?!
Jack should do a podcast or something
This reminds me of the idea that in Up after Ellie died, and Carl hit that man, and was in court, he might have killed himself or gone insane in the old folk's home, and imagined the rest of the film, with the house being blown away by the thing he sold most of his life, and the explorer kid he always wanted with Ellie but couldn't, and randomly meeting his childhood hero.
You know what? I might be with you on this one. Paddington's epilogue reminded me a lot of Titanic's ending, where Rose dies and is welcomed by everyone on the ship, and Jack is there, at the top of the stairs. I mean... crowd + stairs = heaven.
No I will not take constructive criticism.
P. S. I have no idea why this didn't show up in my subscriptions the other day but I'm glad I watched it and I'd love to hear more about your sad and macabre interpretations of wholesome family movies. I'm gonna question every happy ending I see from now on, thanks a lot.
A MESSAGE FROM THE KING TO HIS SURFSHARK-SUBSCRIBED PEASANTS
This might be my favourite video of yours #paddingtonlives
YES! I thought this too! Like were all the neighbours and friends just hanging in the corridor for two days waiting for Paddington to wake up? What are the chances Aunt Lucy turns up right on time? From the moment the convicts turn up and rescue him, it all felt a little too neat for me, even for a kids film.
ZOMBIE PADDINGTON. yes pls
Just when you thought Paddington couldn’t be topped...Paddington 2 came along
Idk if I’m PMSing but I cried at the little clip of the ending. What is wrong with me!
Yep this just didn't appear in my subscription box for no reason. Thanks UA-cam.
Really cool. Love that.
Not only have I not seen any of the movies, but I also don't have a good idea what it is. Is it a UK thing?
If you mean the character of Paddington, yes he’s a book character written by Michael Bond in the 1950s and is sort of a beloved British children’s character
Wait, who do you do the podcast with again?
Mark Kermode. National Treasure and film critic
I've had a very similar thought with Snow White. I think the ending can be read as a pleasant heaven-like dream. A man she met once happens upon her and sweeps her away from a sleep-like death to a castle on a cloud. Either way, I think its a beautiful ending.
