Come and visit us, stroll around our gardens and be inspired.
They do fantastic in soil with plenty and you can not give them too much of organic matter and leaf mold a bit of afternoon shading them from blistering hot sun .
Very true. Blistering hot sun is something we don't get much of here in Ireland!
Bb
came here about japanese maples. Stayed for the irishman
Chet Norton same!
💯💯💯
I could listen to this man all day
I feel validated! Now I know I'm not the only one who runs around my garden, gesturing, planning, and redeeming my mistakes with my next strategy! So true what you said about gardening in the end 😀
We belong to a unique plant loving, never say die group.
Me too ! 🌿🌿🌿
I could listen to him all day 😍😳
Came to learn about Japanese maple. Stayed for the coked up gardener.
Don’t know if that’s true, but made me laugh!
You are totally adorable...and your Japanese Maple information was very helpful
You're so animated! Thank you for sharing your Acers!
Brilliant overview of the maples. Straight to the point, very clear and with a bit of Irish humour thrown in. Love it Thank you.
Just found you searching for info on Japanese Acer's , thank you for such wonderful information and enthusiasm!
loved the fountain maple idea. i collected dozens of japanese mapleseeds in mountstewart garden, stuffed them in my barbour pockets. kept them in damp sand in the fridge, planted them in trays the following spring in a gently heated greenhhouse and waited. none of them sprouted. Out for a walk oneday, reached into my barbour pocket andd was surprised to find a bunch of sprouting acer palmatums. several of them grew into beautiful trees. btw i had consistent successair layering ozakazuki, my most colourful tree.
I love this video! Fantastic personality :) Thank you, now I know my new tiny tree is a Cut Leaf Maple.
Great to see the love for gardening this man has.....fantastic
I love how John is so delicate with his plants.
Funny!
Aside from my own garden, this channel has become my happy place. Thank you for the videos John, I absolutely love learning from you!
Love the enthusiasm and knowledge, great upload.
That wedding cake tree...oh so beautiful. And the Japanese maple are stunning too.
Loved the whole video, honest & direct, no hairy fairy dialogue. Keep it up!!
I really like your videos and enjoy learning great knowledge from you , my master ;-)) thank you so much for teaching and sharing with us your knowledge and expertise !
Would be a fun day learning from this guy.
Your JMs look great. I have recently started growing JM's. I made a short video on my YT channel showing my first Acer Palmatum cuttings I took in late March. I had about 40 and 12 of these made it through summer. I have a few other varieties now taken a few days ago also which I showed at the end. Happy Growing :)
Thank you I wanted to buy a Japanese Maple and your videos was PERFECT for me ! I’m the gardener in my family and learning as I go. I’ve been working on my property for 30 years. Thank you again Carol Woodard from Southern Maryland in the American
This guy is really good, and funny too.
Love Japanese Maples.
He's so right about the wind and sun
Burnt mine to a frazzle.
So glad to know they can be moved.
Thanks for the info! Was exactly what i was looking for!
I just love listening and watching John! He is so unassuming and without ego. He’s a joy to watch and I learn loads
Disagree. He is too shy to look at the camera. His lack of confidence in front of a camera ruins everything.
Well don’t watch him then!!!...... I think he’s great as do many others
Go watch some slick BBC presenters who often make big fat horticultural mistakes while gazing personably into the camera.
I have 2 by my koi pond...they my favorite trees! I love my Japanese maples!
John is really good. No nonsense advice. Best guide I’ve about Maples.
New subscriber. Came for the maple, stayed for Johnny boy Haha, top of the morning to ya!
I live in London and our garden soil has lots of lime. We have three Japanese maple trees and they are very happy.
Just love your videos
The thing I like about Japanese maples is how the leaves of some have such a nice lemony flavor, even into late spring. Not all trees have great tasting leaves, but when I come across them, their leaves get into my salads!
Thanks for this helpful video, nicely presented! Our one has been out in exceptionally hot sun recently, and almost all its leaves have curled up and died. You’ve encouraged us to move it to a North-facing spot, probably in a pot.
Incredible video thanks for the info
Love your videos. And accent lol 😀
Thank you from a Norwegian bonsai head. :)
This is the first time i see a Katsura, and i will get one for sure.
I have a Katsura as a Bonsai, I live in California and the sun burns the bejessus out of it. In a shaded area it makes a beauiful tree but it the red tint color turns in favor of green.
Great video .....thx from Toronto
4:05 Man just slaps buddha on his bald head and makes fun of his weight haha. Cracked me up.
Love the accent and the bubbling energy 🤩😍
Irish rum does wonders
Planting mine tmrw :)
I am currently on my third Acer 'Orange Dream'- all grown in pots. They seem to be quite delicate. Aphids got the first one when it was still small, I can't remember what happened to the second, but it died! The third seemed to be doing ok and I have had it a few years, but now I have some bare branches and stunted leaves. My plants are in a sheltered position, by a fence, and in partial shade. I will persevere though, because I love Japanese acers. Thanks for sensible advice!
This is my first time watching your videos, but I really enjoyed your enthusiasm 😊
I'm getting a dwarf Japanese maple . I think there so beautiful
Excellent thank you
Love his excitement
I appreciate the video /is like listen it to a friend

I love listening and watching you.... thanks :-)
Wonderful video. You have a magical charm and a Buddhist’s/gardener’s sense of time. I will watch more of your videos. You also have a heartwarming Irish accent! A joy to watch.
Brilliant performance! and very informative
Love to see an update on the maples
We have a bright red Japanese Maple in our backyard, on the corner of our patio. Along with all our other plants & trees (many colors & styles), it fits into our notion of an easy to maintain yard. We do have plenty of sun (90ºF and above), but also plenty of rain.
Love the video! I really want a japanese maple. I hope it does well in my apartment here in Brazil! :D
I live in Oklahoma lots of wind it's in a great eastern corner protected on all sides by house fence and trees the beauty thrives and gives me so much joy. Although hearing you describe it sounds a lot better than when I do. 😂
The Irish have a knack for words
Acers can be difficult, wind is a killer, but your information is correct. I planted lovely acers in a limestone area of often brutal weather. We get wind and rain from Morecambe Bay, the Pennines and Cumbrian fells, and the ''beast from the East' as well as scorching sun. I have to hide small plants under the Box hedges until now, or they'll just die. Thank you John.
Haha, you love your plants, and you're manhandling them so roughly! Dig your passion!
Good stuff John!
Cut leaves are my favorite!
these trees are beautiful...lucky you...the rabbits here have made it difficult to attain and keep the growth over winter...I was left with just the trunk....no branches....it's almost funny
Acer are the most fussy plants I’ve ever come across in my gardening 👨🏼🌾 hobby
John you have a good heart and green hand 😘
Your hilarious. Thanks for video!
Thank
Lovely video.
Awesome Acer
I love Irish accent it’s so cool 😎 is that your yard it’s beautiful sir I live in Hawaii I have Japanese maple trees too I love them but your trees are what I’d like mine to look like I put sulfur in the ground it really helps with the colorful ones
Kaeo Bermoy The cool Irish climate is very good for Japanese maples. I suppose the warm Hawaiian climate would be more difficult for them.
John Lord it’s actually cool and sometimes cold in the part of Hawaii iam in and Japanese maple trees do really well here but they like slightly acidic soil the only problem I run into it the water and soil here is very alkaline iv been using lime and sulfur and it’s been working well so far I’ll post a video in three months so you can see aloha ;)
@@yeyo9404 , lime is alkaline, shouldn't be added to acidic loving plants like acers, blueberries bush.. :)
Good job beautiful plants I'm trying to make a couple grow down in Miami in a control situation of course
Manny, how’s your Maples doing? I just bought a Japanese Maple “Bloodgood” from Walmart. I live south of Tampa (In Sarasota).
Can you please do another tour like this, in the spring or summer showing us your garden =) Your personality is very nice & you seem quite knowledgeable!!!! Thankyou for this video. Subscribed.
I love this guy
Merry Christmas John!!!
I have two, thought I lost one all the leaves came off but it has grown back .pleased
May Hampson the leaves fall off in the fall, they are deciduous
Thanks for sharing.. I planted three times within three year... tha last one I planted in April... They always died... I would try again next year as you instruction...
Shoreasiamensis Shoreasiamensis just keep trying . The first one I planted died but the next 2 are doing so good. I have the cutleaf one shown here and a green one.
Hi John. I have a lot of small (about 8" tall) Japanese maples that I want to plant out for about 2 to 3 years before digging them up and potting them in big pots for selling. I already grow loads in pots but I'm trying this technique as they grow far more rapidly in the ground. What spacing should I use? I don't want too much root entanglement, so would be grateful for your advice. Many thanks.
From Lebanon, I love Ireland, the Irish people and Japanese maples 👍🏼
Good video 👍
I love to have a Japanese maple buy i live in a zone 4
I planted a cut leaf tree 7 years ago and it did really well for the first 5 years. The past two years, it is for sure not going to make it. Leaf die off in the under layer of branches began last year and now, in the top layers, the leaves are drying out and curling up. I’m so sad to see this tree die. I loved it so much.
Hope it survived???
Thankyou for your video. I had a green dissecting in tub which was attacked by vineweevil I repotted it in ericaceous compost but it is dying can I revive it would appreciate your advice
What he mean by limey ground is he's close to England
Hi John, thanks for the info. Very helpful. I live in UK. My Japanese maple trees have lots of bugs in new shoots. Bugs are looks brown, black and some looks very shine like gold colour. Any advise for this please. I can send you some pictures if that’s help. Thank you
They sound like Rosemary beetles! If they are, plant Rosemary or lavender and hope they relocate.
Coming up to your garden center
I’ve sick Japanese plants
Can you propagate them from a sprig to root and grow? Or do you have to start from root?
👍
love your video. what do I do if I didn't know for 25 years that I have to trim these down. 25 years ago, I bought 3 japanese maples from home depot on sale for $50 each. it said on the tag they grow to 10 to 12'. It didn't say you had to trim them, so now they are 20 to 25' tall! I thought that was great until I met a pro arborist drunk in a bar and he said you have to trim them yearly to keep them at 10' to 12'. so now what do I do? I don't want to kill them with over trimming, but they are for sure too tall and I would love to have them at 10 to 12' because they're in front of my house. if you want, come to my house, trim my trees and make a video and you will get a million hits, I'm sure I'm not the only one with the problem. even being too tall they are absolutely gorgeous and very, very healthy. btw, I'm in chicago.
👌💕
I gotta cut leaf right next to my rose bush.
John,
What is the small Japanese maple called which grows forward, with cut leaves and turns bright red during winter? I saw it from time to time when I lived in Vancouver, BC. I have a small garden where it can have both sun or shades. Which does it prefer?
I have a lace leaf maple that came up on it’s own. Have you had this happen?
Great video. Please update us on your Acer Palmatum Orange Dream once it reached maturity.
I want one to stay small, will it do okay if I just keep it pruned small?
hi I have a question I lived in northern Ontario Canada zone 4 do you think a Japanese maple would make it here over the winter .they do sell them here for a lot of money but I have not found anyone that has one so before I spend the money for one just thought I would ask if you knew .thank u
The Laceleaf is so beautiful!
Hero keyboard player from Deep purple...oh!! Greetings John Lord
Recently bought a bloodgood and the leaves are drying out. Not all. Tree limb seems ok though. Too much sun?
I've got a cut leaf Japanese maple that has outgrown its space. I'd love to move it, but at 3 meters high, 6 meters wide, and a trunk a foot diameter, I just don't think I'm up to it.
So I live in Mexico. I got one red Japanese maple and I want to plant it in the middle of my garden. It’s quite sunny where I live most days. How should I take care of it? Help! 🤗
Yes I get that, “back to square one again”!
Hey buddy, can you dig up a Bloodgood maple tree from the ground and plant it in a large pot? Mine is about 5 years old, about 1.5 meters high. Is it possible to do so? If so when is the best time of the year to do so? Once dug up and potted, I plan to trim down the stems/branches during winter to keep it small-ish.
Many thanks..
Maz
I so want a Japanese mapel, so I can John Lord it🤣learned so much on this channel
Can you do an episode on how to trim Japanese maple trees please!
Using your artistic set of eyeballs, imagine what you want the plant to look like! I think that one cannot trim too much out, you should be able to see thru the tree.
Doris Cully , Look at U-Tube video by Plant amnesty
what about in Crikey soil? like in Australia?
martinluthierking I think you were thinking the same when he said “Limey soil”!
I have well water which has a 7.2 ph. That is high, as perfect water is around 5.4. What is your favorite acidifier?
I find that water ph is generally not an issue if your soil ph is ok. Japanese maples will grow in alkaline soil provided that the soil has enough organic matter. With japanese maples the main thing is to protect them from the wind
John Lord's Garden Thank you Sir
@@johnlordssecretgarden Thank you. I really want my maples to flourish.
