As beautiful as the song is when you see the context of it in the show Arcane it is soooooo much more emotional. I can not recommend this show enough. Don’t worry you need to know nothing about the game to enjoy. If you do decide to watch keep in mind it was released in 3 episodes chunks at a time for a reason.
Hi Hannah, Thank you for your comment and for watching my reaction. I’m impressed that you have seen the show several times. I can understand why this song is haunting to you. It has such a beautiful and melancholic melody and lyrics. Sting’s voice is amazing and expressive. I felt the same way when I heard it for the first time. It hits you right in the soul. Thank you for your support and feedback. Have a lovely day!
Hey Hannah, I think it's relatively easy to explain why this song hits so much. The lyrics basically sum up the emotional drama of Powder/Jinx in but a few minutes. All the main aspects are in there, tons of respect go to the writer of those lyrics for this achievement. This song takes Jinx' unbearable emotional pain, and puts it right in front of the audience, so that there's no way to look around it. Or to put it differently, this song puts not only one but rather several fingers deep inside the open wound, and joyfully twists it around right until the moment we all get tears in our eyes. "Why don't you love who I am" - the sadness, the desperation but also the anger that lies within that question. It all fits into those few words. Amazing. And I relate so much to that feeling of refusal, I guess we all know it and respond to it. While it may seem odd to have hired an almost 70 year old man to perform a song from a perspective of a young girl, I guess he showed everyone he is still so way up there in terms of performance and emotion and also technique. He sings "I am your ghost", and indeed it sounds like a lifeless, doomed ghost right there. Okay he is my favorite musician by far anyway, but maybe you can agree with me about my attempt to explain why this one destroys many listeners so much.
Beth, I can't recommend Arcane enough. Yes, the characters and location are from a video game (League of Legends to be specific), but zero knowledge of the game is needed for watching the show. It's honestly one of the most incredible pieces of episodic entertainment created. All the music in it (this song included) was created specifically for the show, and really add to the show. I'd love to see your reaction to the show, but if you're not comfortable with that style of video, you should still watch it just for yourself :)
In fact I would say it's better if you don't know the game because you can assume there's plot armor with some characters (hopefully that's not actually true but it has felt like that so far).

I've seen this show like 5 since it came out already I tear up every time I hear this song. It is quite an experience when you watch it play out in the show. Can't wait for season 2.
You have to watch arcane and show us your reaction! It’s literally the best back story to a game I’ve ever watched. Jinx is so complex and beautifully crazy and misunderstood, her backstory is one of the best I’ve ever watched for a game character. Arcane is a true masterpiece and the ending is absolutely heartbreaking, can’t wait for season two
Arcane is a series that, speaking as someone who loves the League of Legends lore and has spent an embarrassing amount of time and money on the game, has absolutely NO business being as outright immaculate as it is. It could have been half as good and people still would have been excited to have a decent enough look into the world of Runeterra, and instead we got arguably the best season of animated media ever. Fucking spectacular.
Poor, poor Jinx ... She really needs a hug ... Goosebumps all over - Sting is completely brilliant here. This music starts the waterfall regardless of seeing the scene or not ... This song is illustrating the last scene of Arcane S1E9, "you" in this context is her sister Vi(olet). Really if you still haven't watched Arcane - do, you don't need gaming background for it.
Over a year has passed since I watched this show and reflecting upon it, realise that I have never watched a show that completely broke me like Arcane did... From start to finish a true masterpiece. And this music is a living testament.
This song is the most accurate picture, the perfect representation of a feeling, the feeling of being betrayed, the feeling of desperation, impotence, and revenge of a broken heart that is still in disbelief, but knows that there's no going back, you MUST watch the show, when this song came up I didn't even noticed it was Sting for like a minute, i was so immersed in the story that i didn't had room for anything else.
Sting is my all time favorite artist; such a unique voice. I can tell after just a few notes, no matter what the song, it's him singing. I have many favorite songs by him, but the one that stands out for me is "La belle dame sans regrets." It accompanies a video with Catherine Deneuve during her career. Absolutely a classic!
sting RULESSSSS - the perfect singer for the perfect song in THE PERFECT SERIES! loved him since i was growin up almost 40 years ago and he just gets better and better
The transition from Powder singing 'Across the River' in the beginning of the very first episode into a tragically sad violin crescendo still hits me hard.
I adore Sting to death and back. Period. ❤ And he just gets better with age. Haven't heard of Arcane before, but will definitely check it out. What a beautiful song, would love to see you analyse more of his work, maybe "I burn for you"?
I've watched this performance hundreds of times. And wish so much that my voice would create any sound other than my speaking voice attempting to sing. I loved hearing the technical analysis of the way Sting is singing it
This was a brilliant breakdown of the song!! Thanks! I know you don't game (League of Legends is the series Arcane is based on), but I highly recommend the show! The context of the use of this song is beautiful (also it explains that blue rocket in the background near the end of this video ;) ).
I fell in love with Arcane... Especially with String's extraordinary Voice... He keeps you speechless 😶 you just appreciate, teste, and admire the ARTIST ❤
I don’t think there’s a harder triple hitter than Sting belting as the violin sobs and jinx putting years of loss and loneliness and pain into one scream
Hi Beth, very cool that you like the song, thank you for the reaction :) I second (well, third, fourth, ...) the notion to watch Arcane. No knowledge of the video game is required, and the story, art design and music are masterfully composed and strengthen each other during the whole season all the time. The creators took the time to fine tune everything to evoke the emotions they wanted to convey.
It's an achingly beautiful song even without any knowledge of the emotional context from the series, but if you do know the context... it's devastating.
That is an amazing song. I recommend you Arcane, you dont need to know anything of League of Legends to understand the show, and whats more, there are some episodes of the people who made the show, and in chapter 4 or 5, it is shown how they created the music.
Chalk up another one for a boomer. That is a lovely composition for which Sting is perfectly suited (although I still think of "Roxanne" everytime I hear him!). Can't say enough about Ray Chen's mastery. He's one of the brightest stars in the world of classical music today. Seen him a few times in concert with the LA Phil. Do see him live if you get the chance.

Then I saw your thumbnail to this video and tbh I got kinda mad, because to me your facial impression first looked like you found the song awful. You sayn You are professional, but i didnt mention that he is out of tune in first part for more than 4 notes. Why You didnt mention that? For all professional musicians, as me and my wife, its totally obvious after only one hearing O.o
Thank you, i love Sting, he is a amazing singer and artist, but i always hear this out of tune notes in this performance and im sure he just had a off day or something, that happens, but everybody i watch reacting is completly ignoring it. Its wierd.
Honestly, I feel this performance was kind of lacking. He seems to be off key a lot and not hitting notes where they need it most. The rawness of his voice is lost in the life setting as well. This isn't to say because it's not perfect it's bad but the original recording hits different imo. I think if I went to see this performance live due to my expectation of the recording I'd have felt disappointed. The violinist is killing it though. I'd love to hear the entire song (instrumental) covered by him.
Agreed. Sting is unimpeachable as an artist, but he is unfortunately very pitchy in this performance. Also the harmonizer used in the studio version adds a gravitas to the moment in context that manages to avoid coming across as gimmicky.
Well, Sting is fine.. But it is nothing compared to the performance of Bjørn Fjæstad at a concert of Danish National Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by the violin of Soo-Jin Hong. If you listened to this, Stings performance is more than underwhelming. Especially he cant manage to do the screams, that are so needed for this song. So I place Sting at a good place 3 after the original, and both are far from the performance of Bjørn Fjæstad.
As beautiful as the song is when you see the context of it in the show Arcane it is soooooo much more emotional. I can not recommend this show enough. Thank you, i love Sting, he is a amazing singer and artist, but i always hear this out of tune notes in this performance and im sure he just had a off day or something, that happens, but everybody i watch reacting is completly ignoring it. Its wierd.
Hi Beth why weren't you allowed video games, I can't imagine anyone being able to say no to your blue eyes haha
To be honest, we never had them in the house do I didn't even really know they were a thing!
@Beth Roars makes sense. You're really talented. You probably spent time on music and other things
"Arcane" is better if you don't know anything about League of Legends, as you won't know which characters have plot armor.
Yes 100%. Very obvious. And this vocal coach is pandering to the fans by not even mentioning it. You can love sting and critique him at the same time
Please please PRETTY please do this tune sometime soon ❤️ ua-cam.com/video/titshXbnVZ0/v-deo.html
Sting's performance is very uneven, but Ray Chen's is just sensational and makes this performance.
It's a shame that his live version is so bad compared to the studio version.
Agreed. Sting is unimpeachable as an artist, but he is unfortunately very pitchy in this performance. Also the harmonizer used in the studio version adds a gravitas to the moment in context that manages to avoid coming across as gimmicky.
well, maybe because in the studio version you have the chance to modify and make it sound differently, but in the live version you can't
@stox7941 we're aware of the tools, it's just so pronounced in this.
He's off-key however in this performance. He's usually spot on so I can only guess that his ear monitor was having technical issues.
Impressive but still a bit like flat champagne compared to the singer he use to be

After having seen him with the Police at their zenith Sting got boring. Jazz- oooh ( vomit).
tbh not as good as in the show. in the show it is probably edited much.
Great singer, great song, but this performance was way out of tune
Agreed. It's still good but it definitely lacks the polish of the featured song in the finale.
It wasn't out of tune at all. It was in tune.
Don't use terms you don't understand.
@@charlestonjew7587 Wrong.
This is better than the studio version. That 'polish' is the godawful synthetic vocal effects.
@@peterspering3709 you need ear training
@@peterspering3709 try some interval training. Definitely couldn't hurt if you think Sting was hitting those notes.
Sting is a good singer but he definitely isn't great singer... he make great music and you can tell he's a aging singer in he's voice..
Sting is awesome!:)
I think so too!
