  • In this video, Steve replaces the rear struts (shocks with a more integrated design) on the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. Replacement is pretty straightforward, but it's always good to have a video like this to follow along with! This is the first video on UA-cam showing how to replace these on a second generation Crosstrek!
    The 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Subaru Crosstreks should have a very similar setup, but may have some slight differences. The second generation (model years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023) car will match what you see in this video.

    How did the ride quality, handling and roughness over bumps/cracks in the road change between the bilsteins and OEM? I am looking into buying these but I don't want to drastically alter my ride quality as it is a daily driver.

      I was holding off on a full review until I installed the fronts as well (still waiting on one of the front struts, going on 3 months now since the order was placed) but I can at least say they seem to have firmed up the ride a bit. Replacing just the back seems to make it behave differently, which I assume will clear up once I get the fronts on. I also need to get it aligned or at least align it myself, as other suspension components have been replaced and I suspect I have some toe-in at the very least. It's too early to say how a full set will handle, but they seem different enough from OEM (at least 100,000 mile OEM) that I can say they are worth replacing as a set of four.
      I plan on there being two videos coming up on this topic; one showing front installation, and the other being a review of the set. If my last part arrives in time, I'll even be able to include some snow driving in the review.

      Oh man, has it really been 8 months? Wow. Technical difficulties have prevented me from being able to edit the footage I have, but I figured I'd follow up here now that they are worn in and say yes, they are still noticeably stiffer. You don't get race car level jolts through the spine, and little bumps are fine, but there is certainly more movement felt by the driver and passengers when going over a speed bump, and there are other instances where it's noticeably more stiff. If comfort in all scenarios is important to you, I'd stick with OE parts. I do have a single polyurethane bushing in each control arm that may be influencing the harshness more than I think, but I feel like it plays more of a role in side-to-side stiffness.

    You should have just disconnected the sway bar links and the inside lower control arm bolts. Presto...falls right out. Could have saved yourself some time and effort. Duh

      Yeah but it's a pos Subaru, thats not working either inside bolt on the control arm now won't go back in no matter wtf I do and I'm not having a good day

    What type of shock would you use for a 2016 Subaru cross trek. For daily bad road Alaska usage
