Subarus are so easy to work on. I'm doing this job this weekend on my car. I got a set of Monroe quick struts. It'll go quicker than mowing the lawn. Thanks for the video, pointers and torque specs.
Thank you for the video! Did mine today, easy enough steps provided, I just was dealing with rust and a lot of it (thanks New England!). 61k original miles, still took 1.5 hours to free, but she's done, and probably saved a few hundred dollars easily!
I just used your video as a guide for replacing rear struts on my 2001 OBW. I had never “built” struts before, so this video was very helpful. Thanks again!
BTW whoever watching this and want to do on 2005-2009 Outbacks - KYB struts codes are 341443 for softer ride and 341276 (from 2002-2004 Outbacks) for more rigid. As said below - doing mine next week (341443 with Rallitek Springs on back and KYB 734034/5 AGX with 20330AG13A springs on front)
Great choice with the KYB's. Installed KYB's on my SUS, the ride is much better than even brand new OEM struts. They are slightly firmer, maybe 20-25%, but gives it a sportier feel. I would not cheap out anywhere on struts, springs, or mounts. I have seen struts punch through the mount and into the steel plate on top on brand new aftermarket mounts.
I know this is 6 years oldbut wanted to say thanks its very helpful. Im glad its a much easier job than the front suspension 😂. That needer new struts, control arms and brakes. But very worth it.
Hello Mr. Subaru - Can you Please tell me if all the Parts you used are from the Subaru catalog? I have a 2006 Subaru Legacy Wagon and all the struts seems to be Bottoming out on the frame! By installing all new struts with new springs will it lift the vehicle rather than adding a Anderson Design & Fabrication 1-3/4" spacer lift kit! Any Suggestions will be helpful! Thank You, Michael DelRossi
Couldn't agree more! Just did my 2005 legacy wagon's rear strut. This video was crucial, but it still took 1.5 hours to break free the rusted bolt with an air tool, heat, and penetrating oil! Good ol' new England! And to think, it only has 61k original miles!
Stupid question, but "support bottom of strut with jack" i presume is the proper way to preload both front and rear struts before torquing? Can you preload the suspension like this when doing other suspension replacements that have bushings?
Awesome video thank you! Really helped when you showed putting the strut together too. I have a 2003 outback and am looking to replace rear (and possibly front as well) struts with excel--G shocks and Rallitek coils. Rallitek has option of 0.4" lift rear and 0.0" lift front or 1" lift rear and front. I'm considering the 1" lift struts for the added clearance. And I'm wondering if you have any recommendation about stock-ish height vs. 1" lift on the outback? Thanks for any insight!
If anyone has to use an angle grinder to cut through the lower nut because it's frozen solid, be very careful not to slip as the park brake cable is right above it. Thankfully it wasn't the cutting wheel that hit it. Cleaning the surface of rust where the bolt goes in with the wire wheel and slipped and hit the cable but only nicked the outer layers.
One thing I have noticed in my Haynes manual is that for the 2005 and 2006 models, it lists the torque spec for that bottom bolt at 160Nm, and the 2007-2009 models it lists it at 62 Nm. Do you know why there would be such a huge difference? It says the same thing in the FSM.
I got the rear and front struts replaced on my 02 Subaru Outback Wagon VDC, but there are still squeaking sounds which were still there before I replaced the struts. Do you know if it is the bushings on the control arms and stablizer bar?
Hey mrsubaru, got a question.... i know this is an old post but i am having a horrible time finding a complete strut assembly for my 1998 legacy outback 2.5. could you point me in the right direction?
I have a 2006 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon. It drives fine when roads are dry but when there is snow on the roads it is like the back of it wants to spin out. Any ideas what is causing this??
It feels like that top nut should either be flanged or have a washer, but my new shocks are the same as these. Seems like not much metal is holding all that tension. The nuts on the front struts are flanged, why not these ones?
I bought all new Subaru OEM parts for my 2004 Outback rear struts and paid a shop to compress the new springs and assemble the components. I brought it home only to find that they have installed the bump stop upside down on one of the struts. Not happy. Should I have them take the assembly apart and install the bump stop correctly? I noticed lots of scratches on the new spring, suggesting they do not have a mounted compressor.
If anyone wants to stiffen their rear (my is sagging a lot with all instruments in the trunk) I read people recommend King (20-30% stiffer) or Rallitek (10-20% stiffer) springs. I will do mine once it gets warmer (May). Will put 0.5" spacer as well

I was trying to assemble the new kyb struts with the old front strut springs then i got the old springs mixed up and forgot which one was the right and left spring. I was having a hard time, so i didnt finish it.
So it’s ok to torque it down while still on jack stands? I’ve heard it’s better to do it with weight of car on the ground which would be more difficult with less room to work
Question Mr. Subaru: I recently changed my rear dampers/shocks on a '08 Impreza. I got KYB gas shocks just like the ones you placed on the Legacy. I now have a horrible ride and I notice that my rear ride height is not what it should be. Could weak coil springs coupled with new firm gas shocks result in such a firm ride?

After how long the factory suspension should be replaced? I have an 07 lagcy wagon one owner about 150xx miles and it rides really good but am curious if It could be better 😁👍 good job btw
Needs replacement already
What happens if you just impact the big nut down on the top hat with out the Allen key? That’s what I saw my mechanic friend do and it’s got me a little concerned
it will spin and the incorrect torque might make it too tight or too loose making nosies
Awesome work doing this project today or tomorrow
Good luck. 👍
Thanks!
When I put my new strut assembly in it didn’t line up to the suspension, it’s like 2 inches too low. any tricks to get them to line up
Jack it up.
Is there a particular kind of jack stand you recommend so as to not damage the pinch weld?
Adam McGrath the ones I have have a groove in the center of them for the pinch weld to sit inside.
Awesome. Thanks
Nice work
Did rear struts on 06 legacy, used Monroe setup. Any idea why car is now sitting at different ride heights in the rear?
is it lower in the rear?
Hey @MrSubaru1387, love your vids! Only question is, can I switch to this KYB + OEM spring combo from leaking factory SLS rear struts on my '05 Forester XT? Anybody tried that?
I saw those old struts and thought of Charlie Murphy's recount of meeting Rick James when he shouted "Unity!" and punched Charlie in the head.
Just have one question are the wagon struts and sedan struts the same or are the different? Thank you
Wagon and sedan are different parts.
Thank you for the response. I made the mistake of putting sedan struts on my wagon and no she sags on one side.
@@austinmiller1098 yup. It'll happen.
Does anyone know of a stronger rear spring strut set up?
I have a buddy who uses his wagon like a contractor van. She's loaded all the time
How long does a job like this typically last you? Great video thank you so much!!!!! :D
Don't you have to compensate for the crows foot on your torque wrench? Just curious if that's a legit thing or if I've just been lied to. Great video!
Yes. There's a setting in this electronic wrench for crow's feet and torque adapters.
Thought you have to put weight on suspension before fully tightening
That may be for the moving parts like links, arms, ... it should be actually better for the lower mount to tighten unloaded, but I would check again the upper one after lowering the vehicle.
Yes and no. Usually only put the vehicle weight on the suspension when torquing control arm fasteners.
